A shame. My 2006 MacBook still works, even though it's a bit creaky. I hesitate to upgrade past Snow Leopard due to performance. But it works.
It's not like I refuse to upgrade. I just bought an Acer Predator Helios 300 and passed along a nearly new Nitro 5 to my daughter. But I hate to throw working hardware away.
Maybe I can get a couple quid for it on eBay.

Fortunately neither Facebook nor WhatsApp seems to be installed here. Pixel XL here, with a Nexus 7 2nd gen and a now-broken Nexus 5x, all running stock. ... Well, except the broken phone, which doesn't run anything.

Being old(-ish), I rather like my Pixel XL which, at 5.5", is right on the cusp of being a phablet.
I'm sure I don't use its full potential but I do play a couple games (I find that Ingress helps get me out of the house occasionally), stream on it when nothing larger is available, and... oh that's right, sometimes I make phone calls.
Heh. Seriously, I do use it to pay for things, eBay, reading IT hack sites, some social networking, and even (rarely) remote control one of my desktops. And for some 2FA.
Actually, I use it for a lot of little stuff. It's almost like it's not just a phone, but also a handy pocket-sized computer that does video!
That episode was based on a book called "Mutant 39: The Plastic Eaters" by Kit Pedler. Actually, from the description, I suspect the plot was lifted wholesale and only edited for length and technical limitations. (I don't remember the misogyny. Could be selective memory. Could be they felt it was a delightful addition.)

It's been years since I last read it and I have never seen the show, but I suspect the book holds up better.
I myself have fond memories which are associated with dating my high school sweetheart, who was working at the local public library at the time, and recommended the book. (She's now happily married and the proud grandmother of a small clan. We keep in touch via Facebook. -ish.)
Back to the book. Like Ms. Stob, any time I hear of a plastic-eating bug, that cautionary tale immediately comes to mind.

No, I think GP has it right: he downloaded information he shouldn't have had access to. Which is NOT the same as saying his access was unauthorized. Just that the information should not have been so easily accessed.
He shouldn't have been able to use that trick.
