Reg reader rages over Virgin Media's email password policy

Re: Another issue with VM's password policies is...

I take it you must have been calling from a non-VM line in which case it's good to know they do ask for further verification in that case. I do now recall that several years ago when the characters I gave weren't a match - I only realised later they were checking against the original one - I was asked for the last bill date and amount.

I called them last month (to haggle the proposed price increase of 3% down to a 30% discount) and was asked to confirm that the phone I was using was the one associated with the account and then the only other check was the three password characters.

Another issue with VM's password policies is...

that when you phone VM customer service you have to enter three specified characters from your password on the phone keyboard and repeat that "security check" when you speak to a representative, the problem being that these characters have to be from the password you set when you first opened an account with them regardless of how many times you have changed the password since then.

You can call them from any phone so if someone knows you're original password they can change/cancel your account or services without further checks.

Re: Special Characters and Windows 11

It's the same panel with either shortcut, you select which section you want from the icons at the top.

Re: Special Characters and Windows 11

Yes, character map is still there and ALT codes work if you have a numerical keypad but the new menu in the WinKey+V pop-up makes them obsolete.

Special Characters and Windows 11

I only recently discovered that in Windows 11 a large selection of special characters are now readily available in the WinKey + V pop-up to click and paste, covering languages, maths, geometry, punctuation and more - much more than just the clipboard history I thought was there (I use ArsClip for clipboard history so had not bothered with the windows one).

Remember SoftRAM 95? Compression app claimed to double memory in Windows but actually did nothing at all

Disk Cleanup

Slightly off topic but it's mentioned at the end of the article - if you run Disk Cleanup as administrator system files are included from the get-go so no need for the extra step described here.

Black screens in Windows 11? Bork has seen it all before

Black and blue - and green...

I remember when the Green Screen Of Death first appeared in Windows 10 insider builds, and everyone was led to expect it to be in the final release but of course it wasn't, and the good old BSOD prevailed. I expect the same here with the black version confined to Windows 11 insiders (and green to W10 ones) with the final releases of both to remain blue.

Happy with your existing Windows 10 setup? Good, because Windows 11 could turn its nose up at your CPU

What gen?

"Although the latest version of Windows 10 (21H1) will go all the way back to the fifth generation of Intel's chippery..."

I must be imagining the fact that I have 21H1 installed on two 3rd gen and one 4th gen Intel chipped devices then.

Surprise! That £339 world's first 'anti-5G' protection device is just a £5 USB drive with a nice sticker on it

Nodrog

Some people are just greedy, why couldn't they have been satisfied with putting a 32GB sticker on them and flogging them on eBay like all the other scammers with a load of old 128MB USBs lying around?

Unmanned drones to slash NHS delivery times to one-fifth of road 'n' rail transport

Nodrog

A remote hospital is highly unlikely to have the personnel, expertise, facilities or equipment for organ extraction and subsequent action.

About the only use for drones here would be urgent laboratory specimens and even then the patient will probably have been transferred to the mainland before the results were known.

The whole thing smacks of that old adage - "A solution looking for a problem".

Labour: Free British broadband for country if we win general election

Nodrog

Promises, promises...

File under "Things That Aren't Going To Happen". For a start, to see this through Labour would have to win at least two - and probably three - consecutive General Elections *and* keep the policy intact despite "events, dear boy".

Not that it would matter which party promised it, it's an election after all and lies and false promises are all the rage.
