MIT to Oz: Crypto-busting laws risk banning security tests

Obesrver1

Lets face it the .....

Internet [and technology] is crap, and we really need three (3)....

One to track products with and be tracked by product.

One to do secure communications over and be spied on by government.

The last one to crap on about nothing on endless when we get bored.

This leaves out hackers and (un)productive warez, as everything else can be done in real time, real place and really.

People just don't realise it, that if you run from the monster (bear or bull like) it will chase you. If on the other hand you create your worse fear (like controlling a nightmare) you can create something more amenable to all concerned.

Stick your head in the sand and you will get it in the arse.

Court doc typo 'reveals' Julian Assange may have been charged in US

Obesrver1

He could have been a hero of truth

If Assange had copped the shit from the U.S. he would have scored world goody points. and been a hero, enduring the hardship for truth.

but instead he has spend 6 years, is it 6 years now or more, hanging out with the Ecuadorians in their embassy. and now also needs to cop it for swapping accommodation without the Brits permission.

Eh, a real saga, yawn.... What's on telly ?

5.. 4.. 3.. 2.. 1... Runty-birds are go: 12,000+ internet-beaming mini-satellites OK'd by USA

Obesrver1

clean up your space or it's the naughty mat for you.

So someone has to send up a wide-mouthed spacecraft to scoop up all the space-crap.

it will need to keep moving faster in low orbit than the junk so it can catch it.

Crush the captured content, and replace spend fuel.

Between you, me and that dodgy-looking USB: A little bit of paranoia never hurt anyone

Alien

eAnarchy

Not even Internet Anarchy, just Anarchy really ! Slowly & not so slowly being introduced into the system.

Chaos is the disruption to systems by the "unknown", But Anarchy is the disruption to systems by the "known".

It will fall, the system.

Now anarchy is to destroy the existing system so one can introduce another, in time, if one actually thought that far ahead, rather than just to pull down this government. What then is the new system that eAnarchy will introduce?

Better watch out !

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean hackers won't nuke your employer into the ground tomorrow

Excuse me.... but,... is that YOUR backdoor?

Yes But, they could not admit that it's their little backdoor they built into the servers that is going to allow the server to be wacked in some not so humungus attack, And further all it will sake is a kiddie with a dirty Wifi toy next door to their home, after they leave the VPN open for too long in admin mode.

Brit boffins build 'quantum compass'... say goodbye to those old GPS gizmos, possibly

Obesrver1

it a start

and it will work on other planets & maybe in space & higher gravity.

Noted above: It is a part of a system not the full system that would need to maintain a starting point reference, & by adding extra planes for 3 dimensions X,Y,Z of movement & would provide rotational measurement functionality.

A great beginning !

Has science gone too far? Now boffins dream of shining gigantic laser pointer into space to get aliens' attention

Obesrver1
Devil

They threw in the idea of big flashing arrows and a sign we are here.

It seems we don't have any advanced tech that aliens want.

So now we have to go back to provoking them to get them to come here and tell us to stop.

Makes sense once you get over the fact that aliens never probed peoples' backsides - it was rodents eating into cows via the easiest method; or abducting people - it was a person with hydrocephalus, and little medical record of procedure to remedy it, causing nightly pressure on her brain & visuals caused a blinding whitening effect;

Smartphone industry is in 'recession'! Could it be possible we have *gasp* reached 'peak tech'?

Obesrver1

Puke Tech

as : if they release another mobile phone I'll puke.

The "Honeymooon phase IS well over", we have autonomous vehicles to prove it. The number of People/zombies succumbed to the device whilst driving has risen to alarming levels, sufficient to override the worry about unleashing a mobile software enabled device with the capacity of many horses at it's control.

Dawn of the dead: NASA space probe runs out of gas in asteroid belt after 6.4 billion-mile trip

Dear NASA

Satellites could use a backup Electro-Magnetic drive to putter back to Earth orbit.

What I'd like to see is a solar sail attached to the likes of "Kepler II" that we could redirect *extra* solar radiation onto using a a big mirror in space. (for possible faster travel).

So that we could power those wonderful satellites back to earth orbit and reclaim/refuel/rejuvenate them.

Also would not have Earth's garbage left through the solar system.

Which scientist should be on the new £50 note? El Reg weighs in – and you should vote, too

Obesrver1
Happy

not bad suggestions

my top three would be:

Michael Faraday

Ada Lovelace

Tommy Flowers

but perhaps my vote would not count as I'm an Aussie.

kak {coughing up an acid ball}

When all was 3G it was crap and telco's said 4G,4G

Now we've got 4G it is also crap, so one churns...

and Optus for the first month or so was ok so so ..

but after Optus has just screwed everybody over for a couple of months maintaining & fixing, extending their supposedly all covering mobile network whilst killing user capacity to connect for said period, I get terrible anything-G and 5G won't be any better.

Telco's corporate behaviour is not 3G, 4G or 5G but 3B(bad), 4B & 5B.....

and will not change.

The D in Systemd stands for 'Dammmmit!' A nasty DHCPv6 packet can pwn a vulnerable Linux box

Reason for disabling IVP6

That it punches thru NAT routers enabling all your little goodies behind them as directly accessible.

MS even supplies tunneling (Ivp4 to Ivp6) so if using Linux in a VM on a MS system you may still have it anyway.

NAT was always recommended to be used in hardening your system, I prefer to keep all my idIoT devices behind one.

As they are just Idiot devices.

In future I will need a NAT that acts as a DNS and offers some sort of solution to keeping Ivp4.

Oz opposition backs the 'regulatory hallucinogen' of anti-piracy laws

Obesrver1
Coffee/keyboard

Simple blocking, blocks simple temptations.

Jolly well tell them not to do it so there won't be naughty pirating any more !

So what about VPN's and Tor. they can be used to visit countries where laws do not block pirates.

If the intent is there then they will use the means to access pirated product.

If the product was sold at reasonable price and not gouged with different prices for different countries around the world, save for exchange rates, there would be less of a motivation to access pirated software.

Should a robo-car run over a kid or a grandad? Healthy or ill person? Let's get millions of folks to decide for AI...

Obesrver1
WTF?

What !!! Why hit anything ?

You hit or kill part or all of my family and I will sue you and your car manufacturer for everything I can get.

That's the response I would expect, I see it when the police have crashed into a people & cars during a car chase.

The whole situation Is we are supposedly better off because the vehicle will perceive objects, inanimate or animate, living or non-living, better than we can, plan more efficiently and avoid any accident, all whilst not talking on the mobile phone, dropping their cigarette between their legs etc

What we have is vehicles so far that cannot tell a truck is broken down in the left lane and runs up it's rear.

Plan: Do not hit anything, ever, until this is achieved stick to slow carts around a university or business park, .
