At historic Apple, Amazon, Facebook, Google CEOs hearing, congressmen ramble, congresswomen home in on tech market abuse

Market Abuse

I wonder if any/many of the congressmen/women remember Kodak.

I worked at Kodak in the UK and because we were a monopoly (and following a number of anti-trust actions in the US) Kodak were not allowed to abuse their market position.

We were told to refer to "other manufacturers" and not "competitors".

We were told to share our developments and our technology with other companies.

The "other manufacturers" in Kodaks products and services were not limited by these restrictions and competed very aggressively with Kodak - resulting in Fuji and Agfa-Gaevert beating them in film and cameras, and the eventual Kodak bankruptcy in 2012.

No Google Play, no problem: Huawei pinches global phone sales crown off Samsung

Bigger Issue

The problem with denying Huawei Google Play in the short term quite an issue for Huawei.

However over the medium term it will result in Huawei developing their own competitor to Google Play, and then develop a better Google Play.

Huawei will then start to provide Huawei Play to other mobile phone manufacturers, and possibly cheaper than Google Play.

As Huawei Play becomes as standard as Google Play in 50% of phones Worldwide you will see Google Play go the same route as Kodak films and cameras.

Beware the consequences as you can reap false rewardsfor your actions.

Re: A sad day

Icing on the cake is that the UK Foreign Secretary says UK will take thase rioters who drive mopeds into police and rip up roads and pavements, and spray graffitti over shops and buildings.

I hope China will appreciate this reciprocal arrangement.

Re: A sad day

Interestingly Trump will be gone in 4 months. I wonder if his replacement will undo his "achievements" as fast and as assiduously as Trump tried to undo Obamas legacy?

Guglielmo Marconi

I suggest Guglielmo Marconi as he founded Marconi after inventing long distance radio.

This nomination is contentious because the Brexiteers would insist on a referendum if the Bank of England proposed such a foreign sounding name on one of our notes (he was featured on a commemorative 50p coin in 2001) See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guglielmo_Marconi

Whistleblower or Public Interest?

These former policemen were probably acting in public interest following Jimmy Saville and others (Rolf Harris, Max Clifford, etc.) who got away with their behaviour for so long because no-one did come forward.

As people who had relevant information on a possible predador/pornographer they probably felt it was their duty to bring this information forward. Should the ICO investigate and find against these whistleblowers are they setting up the next Jimmy Saville/Rolf Harris/Max Clifford???
