The first was when he was CTO at Compaq storage (DEC storage) and Howard Elias asked him join the technical advisory board at StorageNetworks , where I was cofounder and CTO. Richie and Andy Bechtolsheim were both part of that group. That was fun! We are fortunate to have Richie inventing with us as we have re-invented and re-invigorated X-IO.
