Remember Windows 1.0? It's been 30 years (and you're officially old)

Amazon vendors flog thousands of rooted, malware-laden tablets

Michael Habel

I wouldn't feel too smug about owning a MediaTek device either, those are quite frequently backdoored as well.

That said FWIW Hardware wise (and without a thought for it), MediaTek SoCs aren't really that bad. If they'd just be assed into releasing most of the source(s) needed to build custom ROMs like the big boys then I'd be willing to support 'em more. Problem is they just make the SoC, then sell that to some ODM who plants it in his design before selling it for $50.00 a PC. 500 minimum order on Alibaba please contact us about custom boot screens for additional $$$.

So the only cat that might have the code is the ODM, and they just want to push the next thing. 'Cause the shmuck selling his Warez on Amazon / Fleabay is sure to have the Code. NOT!

Michael Habel

Re: Top coders!

I thinknMicroSoft can use all the help it can get from that Dept. 'Cause the Marketing Dept. Sure ain't doing them any good.

Michael Habel

Re: Allwinner?! That's a funny way to spell MediaTek.

1) One China till Taiwan ganis full independence. They are Chinese (too me!)

2) Don't you think that Amazon has better things to do then worry about what somebodys reflogging from Alibaba? If you really want to go down that lane. Then how do you fell about Fleabay Sellers who are doing the exact same thing over there? Why pick on just Amazon then?

And no I stopped on the Headline... As it was >implied to be about the £50 Kindle 7. Though I'll begrudge you that this isn't the only £50 Tablet out there. But, I'll defend everything else I said.

Michael Habel

Allwinner?! That's a funny way to spell MediaTek.

So I gather this ISNT the £50 jobbie then? As that one (Assuming we on about the Kindle 7 5th Gen), has a MediaTek MT8135 SoC in it, and NOT an Allwinner one. But, yeah unless your willing to spluge a bit more for the Device. I gathered that the extra bit of Maleware was an >implied courtesy on Amazon's behalf.

Something that someone with enough intelligence to buy one of these, should have to pop 'round over to xda-devlopers to hop like some dog though a bunch of hoops to be rid of...Till the next update. Which could also be set to ignore.

But, again as with most MediaTek Equipment. It starts off well enough, till such brave fools working on it discover how the Chinese SoC Operators work, the quietly give up. Having just had a poke over there, to get the exact MT SoC in use (See above), it seems that yet again such "Devs" are dropping like so many Flies again.

What an unexpected outcome.... NOT!

That said when cleaned up to such an extent, it could be a decent bit of kit, for the Cash. Just don't expect to ever see Android Marshmallow on it ever.

Re: The advantage of security in hardware...

Certainly was the case with S0NY's PlayStation 3. Dirty little secret is that every Console built before Jan. 2011 is defacto "open". Since all the Keys... Up to that point are in the wild now. Consequently its also why anything post Jan. 2011 will in all likelihood never get hacked. Of course pissing of a bunch of nerdy geeks, by swiping their Linux install functions, + leaving (or as good as left traces), of their private key in the Firmware was also a bit of luck for those that like the idea of having as full an access to their hardware. Bit the fact remains though the immediate exploit OFW3.55 has since been closed. Thus making such a hack, less trivial to pull off, then just installing some Custom Firmware over S0NYs latest, and greatest. It will never fully close the door on such Console's, and thus remain highly exploitable.

Re: Even happier I chose a PS4

@Khaptain

If it means that I get to play more of the kinds of Games, that I want to play (i.e. JRPGs), then I don't really mind. In fact this is perhaps the biggest reason besides the RRoD, why I hate the XBOX brand as much as I do. The world such as it is DOES NOT revolve 'round Halo 5, or Gears of War 17 Fragfest. Which I kinda fail to get since those players would rather be in the PC Mustardrace.

Michael Habel

Re: Even happier I chose a PS4

I can't comment on the PS4. seeing as I don't have one. But, having had a few (now dead) Failbox360's. I can say that S0NY, haven't sold the XMB (PS3), as an open Billboard for anyone to plant their WAREZ all over the place, and not just the static kind either! *

So though I'd first S0NY even less with my CC Info's. I kinda doubt their able to make much out of my preference of GT5/6, and JRPGs.

*S0NY are however guilty of adding Sing star spam onto my PS3, and removing things like Folding at Home. This also fails to impress me. But, at least its not an all singing, and dancing Ad.

Re: Not surprising

Thus enters Linux onto the Stage... I'll grant you Libre / Open - Office will need to kick it up a notch, But This has about as much of a chance at succeeding as flying porcines. The only reason Adobe can get away with this is, there really doesn't exist anything like their products outside of their products. Windows however, has MacOS, iOS, Android, and Linux to contend with. So the only neck MicroSoft will slit, besides their partners. Will be their own.

And, we haven't even begun to discuss the currently waining levels of trust poruring out of Redmond. I guess MicroSoft are trying to morph into some EMC/AWS-esq Cloud purveyor. Cause they've clearly lost the plot on what made them great these nearly last Thirty Years.

Microsoft offers to PAY YOU to trade in your old computer for a Windows 10 device

Michael Habel

Re: This^^^

Class action?! Really...

I'm no fan of Microsoft, and sans the MicroSoft Tax, on new pre-built Machines. I kinda fail to see where a Court would entertain such an idea to be honest. Considering that Linux actually exists. Back in the day Mr. Gates might have remarked that it had the distant potential to kill Windows. That day is slowly creating up on us now. For the other freaks there's Mac OS, and Enterprise, the mass demogragic for this site should be otherwise exempt, from this BS. Of course the trust issues should remain, and if MicroSoft continues to ignore this issue, by the continual release of non descriptive updates, as they have been doing. You have to install it to know what's in it (Yes a swipe at Obamacare) only works when the Shrills are running the place. The problem is the Shrills are clearly in the minority thankfully.

Michael Habel

Re: This offer must be for the holdouts

Funny I'd have thought that, they were throwing the fecal matter 'round since the release of Win8.x. Its almost a shame I'm getting on a bit now. I'd almost would have loved the chance to sit in a Business 101 Class: Today's Lecture... How to run a multi-billion dollar Corporation into the ground, or how Windows 8.x, and Windows 10 destroyed MicroSofts' past dominance in the OS market, by destroying any trace of trust anyone still had for 'em.

Michael Habel

Re: NRA

I'd have thought all the shifty, shady, and downright unsavory Telemetry + AdWare BS they keep trying to shove on anyone NOT foolish enough to drink the kool-aide. Would have been enough to get One to ditch Windows 7 anyway?

Michael Habel

Re: Now you know how much your privacy is worth

As long as I had basic PSN Store Access + Game Updates, which usually tended to be free anyway. Then thats more then enough for me. I don't do online BS Gaming sans Gran Turismo, but that's just for the single player events. I don't know how S0NY plan on addressing that for GT7, but if just being able to play that like I have & had with GT6 & GT5. Then S0NY can graciously shove it where the Sun don't shine.

Is streaming pirate video legal? Europe's highest court will take a look

Michael Habel

These are the halcyon days

Of Media streaming, for though I do NOT own a Pi, I do have a small number of Chinese Android Boxes, that largely do, (As well as advertise), the same services. The short of it is it IS worng.

The longer protracted question now, is this as it should be a Civil Offense, or a Criminal One? I gather the asshats over at Brien wold love to make it the latter, as it would place the workloads on the individual States, to do their dirty work. Where as if it remains nothing more then a Civil Offence, then it would be up to them to then actually build up, and move a case forward. Upshot of that? More trouble than it is worth it.

So the real question is how far will the EUCoJ bendover for these Cartels?

Re: So no new tricksy updates then?

*Note my remark was reflective of the Article, and not the comments made above. For given that info. it's clear that MicroSoft haven't learnt Jack yet. If I went as tied to my leaky Android Phablet with its flakky autocorrect. I'd be so off Windows 7, thing is I hardly ever fire up my beige box these days. Save for security updates. Problem is who's watching the Watchmen?

And this this latest decision from that lot will go down in history as; How to destroy a mega-corp in as many Months. This crap was kinda cute a few Months ago. Now its just turning tragic, and a move to Linux. Like (The learning curve), or not is increasingly now in order. Thankfully Distros like Mint have made this "Curve" a lot less painful then some Shills would have you believe.

So its not so much a question of want, or need. at the root of it all is One of the largest reasons why the PC is a dying beast, that only the very loud MUSTARDRACE refuse to see. TBF though if I were inclined to drop Thousands into such a Rig, I'd to would probably go incandescent at the thoughts of others on the impending death of the beige box. Which is why my next PC will be one of those Ultra low-power jobs from China with an Atom CPU, with Ubuntu pre-installed.

'cause there will always be a market for beige boxes. But the PC fad of the 90s/00s is now over.

Michael Habel

So no new tricksy updates then?

At this point I'm losing what little faith I might have had in Redmond's Chocolate Factory. That said I'm surprised that they haven't continued to push their Spyware further.

Re: Yeah right...

From what I took from TTIP, that would be the simplistic beauty of it. It would have the in-built power to basically tell the ECJ, and possibly the SCotUSA to get on with its business. As it would automatically trump all other local laws. As for Germany? IIRC I think we might have already quietly passed it a few weeks back already. Though I probably should go ask uncle Google beforehand, making that kind of comment. Either way it wasn't that long ago when it did make the news. If only for five seconds on the State run Propaganda Channel.

Michael Habel

Re: Yeah right...

I gather that the 'Merikans have a cunning plan to tell the ECJ to go fourth, and multiply! IIRC they're calling this new ploy TTIP. And, no thanks to Greece, and the Syrian Refugees. Most of us are completely (If not), happily oblivious to this ticking time bomb!

Tear teardown down, roars Apple: iFixit app yanked from store

Michael Habel

Re: Don't get it

Well do S0N allow Dev's to crack open DEX Equipment for those to post Pics of? What about MicroSoft with their Failbox360, or the XBOne(er)? I'm guessing these are all covers under an NDA. So your saying that Apple have no claims to the same protections?

Remember this was about Dev-Kit equipment, and not the final product here.

Michael Habel

Hurr durr

NDA agreements... Its's almost like iFixit have never read their Developer Contract. So sorry I feel little pitty for 'em. OK perhaps it was MY poor reading comprehension that at faut here. But, the way I understood this. Apple had sent these Clowns a secret Developer Box. One that the John Q. Public should never had seen. These Devices usually have some type of NDA agreement that rides along with the Device / Software. Which they are in clear violation of having broken. So let us not confuse this with some Day One Jusus Phone 6S that they posted the latest Centerfolds of.

At wich point yeah I'd have to agree that Apple were being a bunch of dicks again. But, the Story makes it (Well I thought anyway), that this was about a Dev-box, and that was clearly a no no!

Good luck in ever seeing any updates to Marshmallow (Assuming they even ship out as Lollipop that is!). It'll be a cold day before you find someone doing an AOSP port for one of these... I don't get the connection. Why does selling them without plans mean people want to buy new phones every 6-12 months and throw away rather than resell the old ones? Are the phones they're buying such low end junk that they don't last longer than that?

Considering that they're probably low end Mediatek trash devices, that see zero support ever. Not even in the hacker aftermarket al-la CyanogenMod. I wouldn't really doubt it that much.

Re: Perhaps MicroSoft are looking at this the wrong way 'round...

Are you American or a Briton by chance?

Neither I'm German... And, we kinda take data privacy at not more seriously here. Just, cause Google does it on Android should not grant MicroSoft to do this with Peoples PCs. there's a slight difference with what I do on Facebook on my phone, and the private correspondences / websites I visit. this is clearly NONE of Redmond's bussness.

Michael Habel

Re: Perhaps MicroSoft are looking at this the wrong way 'round...

Windows 10 supersedes Windows 7 in every way

Considering for a moment that MicroSoft are forcing Windows 7 Users into the same spyware / malware traps that they placed into Windows 10 at stock. And are coaxing the unsuspecting into installing these as recommend updates that otherwise fix issues in windows... With precious little more info to go on... You might be right. At least one knows where one stands with Windows 10. Windows 7, on the other hand, is quickly turning into a game of wack the Spyware Updates. And, sooner or latter if the current practice doe NOT cease. Then I may find myself moving to Linux before long.

Michael Habel

Re: Fear of Customers Switching?

I just feel sorry for all those that are not techie enough to do this.

Its not a question of being "techie" enough. I'm sure there are more then enough HOWTOs on the wibbles to get the most tech illiterate through, assuming that they aren't also illiterate to start with.

No the problem with Win 10, is that Windows 10 WILL NOT respect your decisions as final, and will eventually at some point when you least expect it to, revert back to its spying defaults. In as far as it presumably can. I have no idea if Win 10 can reinstall Corrina and Co. again after you've supposedly removed 'em. All AI know is I have no interest in finding this out.

Michael Habel

Re: Fear of Customers Switching?

MicroSoft are doing their damnedest to ensure the coming of the Year of the Linux Desktop. But, I suspect it'll take more pressure to get the likes of Adobe, Autodesk etc... to get onboard. But, it seems to me that this task seems only less daunting then say a few years ago.
