Formula One kinetic energy recovery rigs debut

1 KWh battery life == ? Liters ethanol

I haven't followed F1 in several years, so this may be a dead subject, but...

We now have an energy storage system on the car other than ethanol. How will the F1 folks figure out the equivalent amount of fuel to be subtracted from the allotment given before/during the race?

I presume the teams *without* these fancy-schmancy energy recovery systems will yell like mashed cats.

Life-long Denver resident says...

Add a bit more flour, a little less fluid. Cake recipes commonly add another tablespoon or so of flour to the cup of flour. Since the recipe given is a "until it looks right", leave it just a bit thicker than you would normally.

Or head over to the Pearl Street Mall and find a book on high altitude cooking.

If you think Boulder is bad, try cooking at Leadville (elevation > 10,000 feet!). Relatives there say that recipes need significant changes to work right.

Bartenders in Leadville do not serve flat-landers (that's us, folks) more than 2 beers; saves the effort dragging the idiots out the door.

Jarheads

"The US Marines are so called owing to their dislike of having hair on the sides of their heads."

According to my ex-Marine friend here at work, the term comes from the "Plain Of Jars" episode of the Vietnam War (or, actually, the so called "Secret War", the Laotian Civil War, 1960 - 1975), when the Marines defended a position there long after everyone else thought they would pull out. Or something like that.

But then I'm not a Jarhead so what do I know?

Most start-ups die

' "In a way, we plan to inject startup DNA into HP Labs," said Banerjee. '

Yeah. Google was a start-up once. So was TransMeta. So were thousands of dot bombs in the 90's, soaking up cash and never heard from again. Which start-up does Banerjee have in mind, hmm?

Well, hope springs eternal. The joke when I worked at HP was,

@"Land of the Free"

One of the first things a kid learns here in the U. S. and A. is that the contents of a box commonly has nothing to do with the labels on said box. So I guess the answer to the question, "O, say, does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave o'er the Land of the Free...?" is "Does it still wave? Yes. O'er the Land of the Free? No."

Ben Franklin warned us 2 centuries ago about this when he wrote, "He who would trade liberty for security deserves neither". Or maybe it was Mark Twain. Judas Priest?

So, I guess I will place FreeCrypt on my laptop before taking it on my next road trip.

More Cray At NCAR

Ah, yes, the Cray-1 at NCAR. In the spring of 1979, the local IEEE chapter had a "visit the Cray" tour at NCAR. The big thing at the time, I recall, was standing inside the "C" and mumbling something about having Scotty beaming you up. Knowing what know now about static, I'm surprised the NCAR folks even considered allowing it to happen.

About this time I had started work at HP. A little later that year (after the NCAR trip), my operation manager came to me and asked me to write up a fake P.O. for a Cray. Whipping up the P.O. and pulling numbers out of my... imagination, I delivered it. I think the bottom line was about $10 million or so. Seems the manager had just obtained a new rubber stamp and wanted to try it out. The P.O. came back stamped, "I Can't Possibly Sign This!"

Too bad. Would have loved to have run SPICE simulations on it.

Oh, and puh-leeeeeez keep up with the This Old Box articles! I've loved every one!

@Code modification is irrelevant

I would guess that if the code had been developed under GPL 2, then they could respond to "source requests" with the box-normal ntop, MySQL, blah-blah-blah source and be in compliance. Their code is not (necessarily) under GPL, so it would not be subject to the source reveal, would it?

If I write MyWayCoolApp for Ubuntu, am I required to supply source for it, legally? I would hope it would depend on what libraries I used, and those libraries' status vis-a-vis GPL.

It's GPL 3 where "derived works" come into the equation. Have any of the above tools gone to GPL 3?

PLATO and Plasma terminals

Yeah, I played with PlayDoh on the plasma terminals for a while, till I got bored with it.

The most impressive thing I remember about it was the eerie green tint the world had after my play session was over and I had to rejoin the real world. That orange plasma screen did real strange things to your vision!

I never have used P2P or online gaming, but I expect this to be Cox's answer to break the net neutrality stuff. On the other hand, if Cox had their own way, you'd pay double for "P2P and online gaming support", and throw the *@$#*#!! RST in anyway.

It's a conspiracy, I tell ya! A Conspiracy!! ;-)
