Police, Cameras, Pixellation

Jamie Kitson
Thumb Down

erm

I agree that the police should not be able to (ab)use their position to ask for sites to be taken down at will, but apart from being "annoying" what exactly is the issue with pixelation? As long as we can identify officers by badge numbers (it's a different issue if they don't wear them) why do we need to see their faces? Especially if the original (unpixelated) image still remains in existence.

Apple blueprints warranty Big Brother

You can see why they wouldn't want to support/fix under warranty a device that had been dissembled by a pleb, sorry, alpha-geek. And you say it "COULD be employed in such a way as to disable a device".

Why Stop At Kids?

Shouldn't this be about what is right rather than what is feasible? My reaction to this was why stop at kids' adverts, let's ban airbrushing in adverts outright, not just in beauty related ads, but all ads, I should think that food adverts would especially (not) benefit.

Statistics

You seem to have fallen into the same trap as the rest of the media. All the statistics quoted (1/3 - 1/4 of pupils) refer to *receiving* messages, and as we've heard, one message/image can go around a whole school, surely the real statistic is the source of the image, that would show the number of people this is doing harm to.

@Cameron Colley

IMHO most of us don't realise just how water/dust resistant our ordinary cameras are. Far from "they don't make things like they used to" I think compact cameras are a good example of modern products that are very resilient. I still use a three year old IXUS that has been through the wars, and apart from a spot of dust on the sensor (I tried taking it apart, the lens and sensor are a sealed unit) which becomes visible when you zoom in it works perfectly, I'm especially impressed by the continuing battery life. My girlfriend's IXUS recently got very wet with sea water (she swears it was my fault), and funnily enough it seems to have caused a slight mechanical problem rather than electronic or optical, but nothing catastrophic. Similarly my Nikon DX0s and lenses have all lasted very well despite my maltreatment.

Rubbish

a) surely it's not websites that obfuscate passwords, but the browser?

b) there have been plenty of times that I've had to login to sites while colleagues are watching. On the other hand it might make people choose non-dictionary passwords as these would be harder to remember.

c) most browsers will remember passwords for you anyway, so it's a bit of a non-issue

Acer Aspire Revo R3600

Jamie Kitson

Re: no linux on the linux version!

I had the same experience: I ordered (and wanted*) an 8GB SSD but got a (blank) 160GB HDD.

I am a little confused because it looks like if you order the 160GB version it will cost you more like £180, whereas I paid £150 for the 8GB version.

If you're searching around for the Linux version try model R3600L.

* I wanted an SSD for it's quietness, but the HDD *seems* quieter than the fan anyway so it may be a non-issue.

Have you tried Iris? I use it over Opera now. Unfortunately google are messing about with their user agent detection code atm, so you won't quite see the full advantage of google's web-kit pages.

Also wondering how the Diamond 2's screen compares to the HD's screen.
