Amount of pixels needed to make VR less crap may set your PC on fire

Excellentsword

Re: Glasses anyone?

I have wondered, but I'm assuming headsets can fit over them. I've started wearing contacts so it's less of an issue. Still, I'm a big "gamer" who has yet to try VR. Why? Because I knew from the beginning that it's a big fat gimmick unable to truly rival experiences with a monitor, and in part due to the issues outlines in this article. Sure, it's a different experience, but it's not really useful, it doesn't give an "edge".

Fluff

Can't help but think everything since the Start button has been fluff, and I barely ever touch its equivalent now except to type-search for a specific file. Otherwise it's boot, open Steam/Origin/browser and away I go. Stop trying so hard, Microsoft.

Re: Sounds interesting

Writer here (badge doesn't work). The Expanse is amazing, granted, but I watched it on Netflix. Farscape was good too, but I watched it on BBC 2 as a young'un. I associate Syfy with Xena: Warrior Princess-tier stuff, but know that I write these things with tongue planted firmly in cheek.

Proposed Brit law to ban b**tards brandishing bots to bulk-buy tickets

Excellentsword

If you're paying more than £30 to see anything, you're doing it wrong

In myyyyy day (five years ago) you could arrive at the door to any rock venue in Camden and get in for a tenner to see internationally acclaimed bands. Now you do normally have to order in advance if you want to get in, but it's generally done through the promoter. Touts don't even come into it.

Danger! High voltage: Kraut customs bods burn half-tonne of weed in power station

Excellentsword

Re: "Kraut" ? really ? in the 21st century ? after 70 years ?

I perceive kraut as an affectionate nickname with no offence intended i.e. krautrock. Should we call it weirdo, minimalist, German music to take drugs to? No.

A dissonant fusion of heavy metal and hardcore punk characterised by unusual time signatures, experimentation, and rhythmic complexity. I recommend just listening to Calculating Infinity, it's awesome.

Hollywood has savaged enough sci-fi classics – let's hope Dick would dig Blade Runner 2049

Excellentsword

Electric Dreams

Has anyone been watching that on Channel 4, Sunday evenings? It's various screen interpretations of Dick's more obscure short stories by different directors and writers. Quite good, I thought. I always hit the internet in search of the originals to see how they differ from the show. That might be the crux of Dick and the success of Blade Runner, in that Dick provides very evocative worlds in which to set great sci-fi tales, and the directors/screenwriters run with it into even more interesting territory.
