Apple's iPhone X won't experience the joy of 6...

Re: Numbers

@ledswinger

How long do you estimate before that price sensitive bubble bursts?

It looks to me that people are purchasing not on price but by features. You can get most of the stuff (sometimes more depending on your leaning) on a cheap android but people are shunning those and spending multiples more on stuff they want.

I guess it’s like buying a Dacia vs a mini or bmw something, bmw probably sell vastly more of everything than Dacia at much more cost to the customer, yet they are still around and both manufacturers sell cars with 4 wheels, brakes, electric windows, abs, traction control etc.

My next car may be a Skoda purely because I like the way they have reinvented themselves and love the styling etc and I’m sure I can pick enough options to make it what I want, the rest of my family wouldn’t be seen dead in one purely because of their previous image.

Some people are more accepting of change than others.

@successcase

Apples problems are rumoured to be due to the yields of the Juliet sensor for the 3D face scan tech,

Not enough sensors to finish enough phones to satisfy demand.

I think you are right though that this will be a 1 model issue. This is the tenth anniversary handset so they have pushed the boat out even further to celebrate their ingenuity.

So sales will still rise

Just by not as much as a previous model.

Ask any company if they would be upset with a sales rise of 20% or even 5% year on year!!!

Ask any individual if theyd be upset with a 20% salary increase year on year

Re: solution seems easy enough

the better solution would be to encrypt the private info as its added to the exif. anyone wanting it could send you the encrypted data, you feed it into your device/photo management app and it can then send them the photo with the correct unencrypted exif data.

Re: You are shitting me?

my Samsung happy snapper from 2010 does gps tagging of photos. I purchased it specifically for that capability.

i/Photos on the mac will/can strip those gps tags out when exporting to third party apps etc. I think it asks you, certainly the first time, and is something i would do if i uploaded to third parties.

Not sure about how the iPhone deals with sending messages via emails or imessages though, will need to check, but its not mass uploading to the public internet.

Either way, don’t know why people would want to support and cause so much harm and mayhem for a cause that can’t even produce a proper flag, if that’s the best they can do then there is no hope of them doing anything remotely competently if they got what they wished for.

Surely their flag must be enough of a clue for their potential supporters to see there is something seriously missing with that lot.

Cat5e running past a lift shaft

My first job after uni, 1 building had an intermittent issue with people in some offices and floors complaining of slow downs and lost connectivity. Long story short, turned out to be interference from the lift motors. Re cabling avoiding the lift shaft permanently sorted that one. The previous guys spent over a year not figuering that out and I earned myself some browny points after sorting it in a few months.

If only all issues where as strait forward as that to prove, lift wasn’t used often and just needed someone to use it whilst observing users pc’s exhibit the behaviour also running a constant ping to see real time drops.

Falling apart at the seamless: Inside Apple's LTE Watch fiasco

Blotto Silver badge

LTE is good for those of us that like to exercise outdoors

I cycle offroad and take my iPhone & Garmin edge 1k wherever i go as i use the track my ride feature to send to my otherhalf and mum so they can come rescue me if i need help. Having an iWatch with LTE would mean i can leave the phone at home and still be tracked etc.

Likewise she takes her iPhone when out for the same reasons. Many here do not see a use for a connected watch but many others in the real world do.

I purchased a cheap (£35) kids smart watch the other day for my nephew, it had a camera and not much else, my sister asked if it had GPS and could receive calls, when i said no she said no thanks and asked me to take it back as she could get better elsewhere that could track her child when out playing. I was miffed and thinking how ungrateful etc and you can't get all that for less than £100 and a 6 year old boy would break it in less a week. Then i looked online at the usual Chinese importers and found watches with GPS and 3g for ~£30, then i checked Amazon and found GPS 2g smart watches for £20.

http://amzn.eu/2AbQ5hI

there is a market for GSM connected watches.

Apples method of connection is a bit short of the mark though, unless the watch is fully autonomous, there is little point having a mobile radio in it.

Mobe reception grief turns LTE Apple Watch 3 into – er, a dull watch

Blotto Silver badge

Re: The article is wrong about iOS Wifi and Bluetooth.

@Brenda McViking

i see the furore, but.......

if you absolutely need the radio's off then currently you have to go to airplane mode to ensure the gsm/lte radio is off anyway,

most of the time you turn wifi or bluetooth off to disconnect from or prevent connecting to something that is usually not an Apple something.

If i turn her bluetooth off to connect my phone to the car sound system i really don't mind if her phone is still connected to her watch, saves me grief when she moans her watch isn't connected as i forgot to turn it back on again.

They should change its name so its clear its just disconnecting from non apple stuff but still on.

They should also explain the ramifications for tracking purposes (the MACS and ID's should be randomized etc)

Also what's with the reenabled at 5am nonsense? What's so special about 5am.

Re: Hard locks attract workarounds, workarounds become a honeypot for malware.

@Dan55

No drivers exist for the hardware in question, even the hackers resort to hardware changes.

https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/some-broadcom-mini-pcie-wifi-devices-unsupported-in-macos-sierra.201746/

"there is no solution- this kext will not load in macOS Sierra"

If people are told it won't work then Apple will get far fewer complaints than if they let people install the free software who then find out they can't connect to the net, can't uninstall the OS and Apple and their customers are left with an expensive hardware replacement trip to the Apple Store.

Far easier to say no it won't install as hardware is incompatible, which is the truth, and let some savvy customers hack around to get the OS to install, build a hackintosh or buy a new Mac.

Blotto Silver badge

Apple's only motivation in introducing the Lock is to stop older machines being upgraded

@sabroni

"Apple's only motivation in introducing the Lock is to stop older machines being upgraded. It's a greedy attempt to force users to buy new machines."

The OP has already stated the reason is due to incompatibility with hardware in those early 2009 machines.

That's like saying apple has been greedy by no longer supporting 32 bit apps in iOS, or no longer supporting PPC, or windows is being greedy by only supporting new cpu's with their next OS, actually that last one can be seen as being greedy.

Apple's reputation is about making systems that just work and don't need an expert to meddle with on a frequent basis. Installing this OS on those 2009 systems will cause them a support headache requiring the owner to purchase additional hardware to support a free OS update.

At least they checked and know ahead of time what system's are not compatible.

Hardware update for clueless owners is tricky, telling everyone the free OS won't install on incompatible systems is also tricky.

Understanding why Apple have taken this approach is not tricky.

Blotto Silver badge

Because they spent effort locking it down rather than just giving a warning

@Sabroni

it doesn't work on those machines in the current release (sierra) & won't work on the forthcoming release (High Sierra) either.

What are you and the OP complaining about?

El captain is still supported on those machines, and the next release (High Sierra) hasn't even shipped yet.

Boo Hoo, companies current and future free software won't work on my machine from early 2009.

Ask most Android users if they can upgrade to the latest free version off Android, and then ask if their handset manufacturer is greedy.

Blotto Silver badge

Re: Hard locks attract workarounds, workarounds become a honeypot for malware.

Apples greed in releasing a free OS?

They already know it won't work fully on some machines so prevent those machines from loading the free software.

I just can't see how releasing a free OS in late 2017 that prevents installation on machines they know it won't work properly on from early 2009 can be seen as greed. How can releasing a free os 8 years after the machines shipped be called greed?

Re: TBH

@Terry 6

you are correct, but most people's test system is just an identical implementation of the live system with dummy data.

Most COTS systems don't provide the ability to customise the system as you describe and most IT shops won't have the ability to add that customisation either.

The best thing they can do is ensure no test data gets on the live system and that they have documented processes that ensure separation.

At the end of the day, real data was added to the test system, provided it was suitably scrubbed and stayed onsite (in country or just not on the net) then the data was contained.

It would be upto the software vendor to provide a facility to brand the test system as a test system.

Re: Sound

@Paul Stimpson

"Sounds like they're saying "You can plug in better hardware so we're going to give you junk.""

they don't give you anything beyond the DAC that powers the built in speakers as there is no 3.5mm jack. the lightening to 3.5mm jack has its own DAC in the cable. Streaming sound to anything will use the DAC in the playback hardware. The money saved has gone into improving something else like the camera or screen, or cpu.

I've obviously mishandled my post and the downvotes are from people that didn't receive it well.

Jokes aside, some people just like to downvote for no good reason.

If they really want a great DAC then they can buy a pair of wireless headphones with a great DAC now or anytime in the future, or buy an android with a great DAC now and plug their crappy headphones in it, their choice I guess.

Blotto Silver badge

@vincent himpe

the only valid thing you moaned about was the email search and filters.

you can take photos without unlocking the phone

in settings you can ensure the camera remembers the last settings like which mode (video, portrait, panoramic etc) my hdr settings stick without changing any pref's in settings

you can change the icons on all icon screens to be what you want

there is an app called find iphone that you can use from a web page or other i device, it can ping your phone even when locked and will show you on a map where it is. When the phone runs out of juice it can tell apple where it is before it dies so you can find it on the map even with a flat battery.

Almost all of your concerns have already been addressed, maybe make an appointment with an applestore and have a word with them or call the helpline?

Blotto Silver badge

Re: Sound

Apple already explained why. They have said for a while now that better DAC's are available outside the phone, so rather than lock the consumer into what ever DAC the phone ships with (often chosen due to cost) the consumer can connect to the phone via Bluetooth and use the DAC on their third party device instead. It's one of the reasons for ditching the 3.5mm jack.

Maybe el reg where taking the piss with the DAC thing, or just baiting people, providing them with something to moan about, either way the DAC in the phone is now irrelevant.

its because they don't have enough trained humans to answer the calls on demand and use the robots to add delay in the hope that a human will be available once you've done with the robot. They could just train more humans but then the cost of the service goes up, less profits etc etc. Its much cheaper to have a few less humans than they need as typically its not costing them anything (or very little) for you to be waiting on the phone a few mins vs the cost of employing extra humans.

Blotto Silver badge

Re: Cloud

so how does everyone connect to the cloud and how does the cloud connect to itself and others?

People don't seem to understand what a data network is or its significance in enabling everything else that runs on it.

People don't realise their cars contain high speed data networks, or the mobile phone masts are connected via high speed nets or even that the analogue phone lines are now actually digital, with voice being encoded and sent along high speed data network from the cab or exchange. if 3 or more machines need to connect then they will do so likely over a high speed network with its own rules and processes that at some point will interface with other networks that have their own rules and processes and all needs to be seamless to the user.

We all want it reliable, scalable, extensible, quick, secure and above all cheap. The cloud is not the answer to this EA chaps networking woes, its actually a huge risk to him as he won't have control.

Police deny Notting Hill Carnival face recog tech led to wrongful arrest

The police are there to ensure safety for all attendees, as such they should have publicised that they would be doing facial recognition and also have loads of cameras (even fake ones) in plain site painted yellow or purple (or whatever) to ensure those known criminals on their list stay well away from the event, thereby ensuring a peaceful carnival as the known bad elements would be too wise to attend knowing they'd be caught and potential bad actors would know everything is being recorded for later scrutiny.

It would get the public inside too.

The met should also tell attendees what will happen to the recordings once the event is over, when will they delete them, what systems will they feed the images into and for what reason etc.

Yes I realise they won't say and will keep the data on file and feed into future systems for all kinds of bad reasons they won't want to publicise or explain due to public uproar.

It'd be easier to realtime stream crucial data via satellite (location, heading, speed, altitude as a minimum) just like engine data is currently related back to rolls royce. In fact air France crash from Argentina a few years back, before the jet was found all they had was the realtime data which showed iirc conflicting speed info which was due to the frozen pito tubes which directly contributed to the crash as the auto pilot stopped and the pilots where feeding the computer conflicting instructions one erroneously constantly pulling up whilst the captain was pushing down to get air speed to unstall the plane.

Good question. Assuming the sealed units are still sealed and no water ingress then the data should be safe for years. The x days limit for finding the boxes referred to the life of the batteries for the locating pingers.

Solid state devices tend to be quite resilient, not had an issue with USB drives being washed and tumble dried, obviously submerged at depth in salt water for years is a lot more extreme but if it's seal is in tact there is a chance.

If they find the plane and can get the rapid data logger from the cockpit too that would be a huge revelation for them as it may contain data the black box doesn't.
