It's Patch Blues-day: Bad October Windows updates trigger BSODs

PhilErrington

This is not just on WSUS machines. We do small business support and have customers who have the problem on standard 10 pro upgrades from 7 pro.

For all the people who say techs should test updates: this would be great, but Microsoft auto rolls out patches on 10 unless its a copy of windows10 enterprise.

This is of course stupid hence I tweeted today on #windows10updateisstupid It would be great if this got some support.

Brit ISP TalkTalk blocks control tool TeamViewer

PhilErrington

So if you pay for remote support assistance with a company and they happen to use any of these apps it looks like you not going to be getting much remote support?

How long before scammers switch to another remote package?

How long before talk talk customers get all remote access banned?

WHy don't they try utilising traffic management in a sensible way (blocking IPs that do these scams) rather than such a stupid move as blocking a whole application.

Is your Windows 10, 8 PC falling off the 'net? Microsoft doesn't care

Simple fixed worked today

Symptom: Windows 10, DHCP dead for local and wireless connection.

Solution. SHIFT shutdown

Result: working after churning for a bit on the shutdown and restart.

I believe the SHIFT shutdown forces windows 10 do clean up a bit.

This has also fixed slow internet access on similar windows 10 kit recently.

Gullible Essex Police are now using junk science lie detectors

Use a clever police dog

If octopus can predict footie results lets get those underworked police dogs to urinate in certain ways if they think the suspect is lying.

It should have the same psycological effect especially if the police make a (fake) video of the dog getting it right every time and show it to the (gullible) suspect first.

TP-Link abandons 'forgotten' router config domains

PhilErrington

I think this might be a case of TPlink not caring about the domains.

From the patent lawyer presentations I've seen having a registerred trade mark as part of the domain can certainly lead to litigation if used for anything (such as attempting to sell them). Tplink is registerred so I assume the domains are not that important to the company.
