If you weren't rich enough to buy a Surface before, you may as well let that dream die

Re: Who would want one anyway?

Entirely agree. I've no love for the Redmond beast, but I bought a Surface Pro 4 for photo editing when away from home.

It's ideal for that and half the price and weight of an equivalent MacBook. Battery is OK, screen is wonderful and the lack of ports is easily solved.

I've not had any issues when upgrading (yet) and it runs Capture One Pro will no issues.

Some Things just aren't meant to be (on Internet of Things networks). But we can work around that

As a slightly knowledgeable home user, my router cannot do subnets so I use MAC lists. My desktop, the Wife's desktop, my phone, her phone and the printer (not wireless).

For the Wifi I changed the SSID and set it to not broadcast, and admin password and that uses the same MAC list. So both wired and wifi is covered.

Thumb Up

Might be of interest if you're puzzled

GDPR doesn't seem that complicated, really. Something good from the EU? Shock.

Anyway, I'm mainly concerned with SQL Server, so here this I found

Seems pretty straight forward.

Re: Take a Stand...

I've no problem with installing Linux. As soon as it's usable for my everyday needs, I will. That means all my games and all my photo editing software.

Until then it's just a toy OS for me to play with occasionally.

What is this – some kind of flashy, 3-bit consumer SSD? Eh, Seagate?

BazzF

Re: Getting closer.

And photographers. And videographers. Even as a 'consumer' non-pro photog, I have almost 1tb of data and associated files.

Digital cameras resolution is getting higher, which results in larger files. If I shoot uncompressed with my camera is result sin a 80mb file per shot, and a typical day shooting often produces well over 200 shots. Thats nearly 2Gb on it's own, then there's the sidecar editing files that contain adjustments and any processed photos (JPG, TIF, PNG etc).

A pro shooting a wedding ight genereate 2000-5000 photos. That would be nearly 400Gb just in RAW files.

1Tb drives are probably the *minimum* nowadays.

This is reycling the old Diacetyl thing. Yes, it's harmful when inhaled in large quantities- like those encountered in a popcorn factory. But not in a vapouriser. However, since there's a perceived possibility of harm, reputable (and most non-reputable) juice mixers no longer use it.

Microsoft keeps schtum as more battery woes hit Surface sufferers

Spro4 not too bad

I bought a maxxed-out SPro4 last year mainly for photo work. I was looking for a tablet to run on location but the crippled/feature-lacking tablet apps are pretty bad.

So loking for a small laptop resulted in a woeful choice. small seems to be equal to low-spec.

I never actually considered the Surface range until quite late (I tend to avoid Msoft wherever possible) but it's really very good hardware-wise. Of course it has Win10 but I can run my photo software very nicely and more, I can tether it to my camera so get a really nice preview on a really good screen. It's also light enough to run in a cradle attached to the tripod for studio work. SO much better than trying to examine shots on the camera's small screen.

After about 5 hours of shooting the battery starts to die, dropping to around 20% though so not perfect. In the studio though it's really nice.

Coming up on 6 years cig free now due to vaping. It's come a long way from when I started.

Now it seems to be mostly idiots trying to fog out whatever space they're in. Good way to get it banned. wankers.

All I want is something that keeps me off the cigs, lets me enjoy whatever flavour I might like and, as I rebuild my own coils and the wire and wicking material is easily obtained I've stopped evangelising.

Over the last year vaping has cost me around 20p a day. A considerable saving over what I was paying even when i stopped buying cigs let alone now.

Hey, if you want to smoke, go ahead. They're your lungs. If you're under the impression that nicotine is a carcinogen, then I suggest using the internet thing to self-educate, or getfucked. Doesn't bother me what you beleive.

For what it's worth, I have a Surface Pro 4 on Win10 pro and a self-built desktop on Win10 Home, both fully patched with the aniiversary update and subsequent KBs.

Neither have any issue with my Kindle paperwhite, Android phone or any of my cameras when connecting via USB 3 or 2.

The desktop is only used for gaming and photo editing, the Spro is basically the same exept for the gaming.

Maybe it's a confuence of various bits of other software causing the issue? I dunno. I don't tend to install much exept for updates to the stuff already there.

Capture 1 pro, On1 Photosuite and a bunch of games from Steam.

Apple's 'lappable' iPad Pro concept is far from laughable

BazzF

Did Microsoft finally do something right?

As a serious amateur photog, I was looking at the iPad Pro for thethering cameras while shooting outside.

In the end I felt limited by the applications, rather than form factor. Photo software is notable compute-heavy so in the end I went with a maxed-out Surface Pro 4.

As a long-time rabid anti-microsoft person, I was quite surprised by both Win10 and the Spro 4.

The pen works fine, accurately, the touch is as responsive as anything out there and the screen is, frankly wonderful.

even Win10 actually works quite well as a touch OS once you disable all the phone-home stuff that you can.

And the major benefit for me is all my photo tools run on it. This means I can show my model the proper edited result really quickly, rather than a auto generated jpeg render.

The 'lapability' thing doesn't come into it, because it either sits in a cradle attached to the tripod or is in my hands.

Battery life is 'good enough' but not stellar.

Not all vapers are cnunts

Believe me, the cloud-chucking idiots annoy the hell out of the rest of us vapers as much as you.

I have two things: 'Common sense' and 'good manners' so I vape anywhere, usually stealthily, to get my nic fix wherever I am. That's why I vape. Not interested in huge clouds to display..

There have been quite a few studies now on 2nd hand vapour. I suggest google.

The point is, it got me off the fags for the last 6 years and I'm not remotely interested in stopping any time soon.
