Re: Old Nokia menus

So I bought a Nokia handset from years ago, it came set to Chinese language, not unreasonably as I got it from China. It literally wasn't difficult, with another Nokia handset from around the same vintage, to step through the menu-sub-menu system and set it to English. It surprises me that some people have found this a difficult thing to do

TRS-80

The first computer I put my hands on. I got a job at a school and there was one in a cupboard. I was allowed to take it home over the Christmas holiday and came back a computer wizard (I could put it together, turn it on, load and run a program, so....) and didn't really look back. In my opinion, it had a great dialect of BASIC, which really helped to smooth the path.

UPVOTE. I was literally about to post the exact same thing. I know people aren't all stupid, but really how difficult is it to define a spreadsheet column as text. I've had that problem myself when some entry in a spreadsheet column is defined by the spreadsheet as a date field. Right click, define as text, it's probably different in different software but takes two ticks (2 February 1943 to genetic scientists)

Microsoft Windows 10 October update giving HP users BSOD

Barton Gellman defended auto-updates, arguing they do more good than harm

Firstly, he doesn't offer an argument, you quote a tweet, which is an assertion. It's his point of view,

Secondly, if there are any statistics on this, let's see 'em.

There may be users who for whatever reason don't mind a bit of downtime, but people who own their computers, and want to do, you know, work, might want to choose when or whether to update

Apart from El Reg

Does anyone call NFC 'bonking'? I ask because I have picked it up, but everyone looks at me strangely when I ask if I can bonk with my credit card or phone
