Re: Nokia need to put out Android phones

Utter drivel.

Nokia do not "need" to go to Android at all - where would that leave us all? With the exception of RIM, you'd have a market cotrolled by two companies - are you seriously suggesting that environment would be good for consumers? We should encourage choice, because that's the only way to get prices down for the consumer - not choosing "A or B" - but appreciating that there is a C and D out there that do the same things, in different ways.

The "Android way or the high way" attitude is totally self-defeating and will ultimately do nothing but grant Google a total monopoly over the market - precisely the thing most open-source advocates have groaned about Microsoft for the last 20 years - the hipocracy is stratospheric.

Windows Phone 8: Microsoft quite literally can't lose

Can anyone on here, with any certainty; defend the consumer position of getting value for money, against the following:

Assuming WP8 fails, along with Blackberry and "all the others" of little market share, how is a mobile industry controlled by only two companies (Apple and Google), offering two choices (iOS and Android), good for anyone but those two companies?

Are we really all perfectly happy with an industry that offers only TWO choices?

Would we be happy choosing between only a BMW and a Vauxhall?

Would we be happy choosing between only the BBC and ITV?

Would we be happy choosing between only Tesco and Aldi?

I fear greatly for a tech press and IT populace who do nothing but argue over whether the iPhone is better than the latest Andoid. We are paiting ourselves in to a very scary corner - the market needs choice, the more the better. I'm not even suggesting that Microsoft should be that third choice, but something else has to be allowed to succeed.

The relentless, utterly fixated bile and hatred towards anything that has been touched by Microsoft on these forums has made me hate visiting this site, and I'll likely have to stop soon; as it's not doing my blood pressure any good. People seem to just post shit about Microsoft or one of their products for the fun of it - it's trolling, pure and simple.

Now clearly, if you have used it, tried it and diskliked it as a result - great! But why not simply dicsuss it? Why the poor tatse jokes, the insults, the pointless flaming? It is the single most irritating thing about this site and it spoils it.

Re: native app dev

A deveoper can code an "app" for a Windows 8 Desktop, and then port that app to a Windows 8 phone. It's really not that complicated. You CAN run the same App, and that App can utilise cross-platform configuration to deliver the exact same experience, no matter what device you are using. This has been demoed most recently with the new Microsoft Office 2013 - web-based apps allow you to stop working at your desktop, then pul up the document on your phone and carry on from where you left off - it's the same app and the same data, just on a different device.

Re: Duh!

Absolute cack.

I've got news for you Mark, Windows 8 is going to be released, and when it is, it wil be installed on 95% of all new x86 Desktops, Laptops, Ultrabooks out there - so if Devs can't be bothered with the "platform" (and remember, the platform for Windows 8 works across ALL devices) then they're going to lose out big time.

If they want a slice of the action, they're going to HAVE to code for it - and that means Desktops, Phones, Tablets, Laptop you name it. What Jim is trying to say is that re-coding for a different device is a piece of proverbial piss - it's been done and there are tons of demo codes samples out there and even more documentation on how to do it.

So like it or not, there are going to be millions of Windows 8 installs out there - why on earth would Devs not want to be part of that?

Re: Still more Microsoft marketing propaganda...

How is Metro UI a "failure"? Are you seriously basing that "fact" on the performance of Windows Phone 7?

Here's some news for you - developers don't have a choice about Windows 8 - it's coming this October, and almost every new PC will be sold running it - so develop, or miss out - their choice.

Whether you like it or not, Windows 8 is going to ship by the millions - Vista was *hated* - but still shipped MILLIONS of copies; because, and I will say it again - almost EVERY new x86 Desktop or Laptop sold was runnning Vista - you can't change it, you can't do anything about it, it's a fact and you have to deal with it. Your average consumer doesn't care about re-formatting and installing Windows 7 or another alternative O/S - they don't know how to - they will just accept it and get on with it.

And so your complaining vanishes in to the fart-stenched night from whence it came.

Phoenix50

Quite Early?

Isn't it rather early in the month for the Register's regular MS-bashing article to surface?

Pun intended.

In all seriousness, it's as obvious as the nose on your face that this was always going to happen during the rise of Apple to the giant it is today, to say nothing of Google.

As sad as I am to say it, companies come and go - we may be witnessing the autumn, if not winter of Microsoft, and it will be a very interesting next 10 years to watch what happens. I love Microsoft, and I'm not remotely bothered what people make of that; I freely admit I've based my entire career on supporting their systems and software - I don't want them to go, why the hell would I?

Apple are enjoying the fruits of their labour (there goes my pun'ing again) and it will continue for some time to come - but they, and others such as Google will have their time in the sun, and they will fade eventually, just like Microsoft will.

The world moves on, never more so than the world fo technology - I wonder how long they can all keep moving on with it?
