systemd'oh! DNS lib underscore bug bites everyone's favorite init tool, blanks Netflix

Re: @AC "have to live in a box"

"Yes, every DNS server you use is able to collect your personal information."

Not to mention ever "Web Designer" seems to be using a WYSIWYG that adds Google feature into their damned web pages (or their hosting solution is doing it). Load No Script and just see how many Google-y references there are as you browse.

Re: Alternate

"hand code resolve.conf with DNS pointing to 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4"

Better yet, build your own DNS server and stop supplying Google and/or your ISP with your queries. Make them work for it.

Re: Cost is the smaller concern

"Open source won't save the world. For many, it's just a different way to make money, trying to deceive you into believing they're some sort of white knight fighting for Good."

Open Source may not save the world. Everyone's got to make money. I'm just glad it's not going to be Micro$oft.

Long gone are the days when you had a dedicated team in house that kept your systems running. Maybe this is the rebirth of that.

Back in the day

I used to do desktop support and had to go visit one of our extremely less than technical users. We supported damn near everything that had a wire in it too.

On this particular day she was complaining about a hum in her telephone headset. This was was a hard wired Plantronics to an Avaya IP phone. The hum was only in the headset. Not the handset or speaker phone. She would say the hum was there, take the headset off and hand it to me and I couldn't hear anything.

Finally, I noticed that she had one of those warming pads that you put in the chair. I had her stand up and she immediately said the hum was gone. I unplugged the pad (it was strapped to the chair and I didn't want to fuck with it) and she confirmed the hum was gone.

She got a wireless headset that after that.

That got you a +1

"Trump sucks asteroids through a millipore filter... but Clinton would have been worse."

That got you a -0.5 so I'll just round it up to -1.

Ubuntu UNITY is GNOME-MORE: 'One Linux' dream of phone, slab, desktop UI axed

I guess that's about right

I get a new laptop about every two years and that happens to coincide with Ubuntu's even numbered releases. I can't imagine the fuster cluck that this thing would be trying to go to 18.04 LTS from 16.10. But, TBH it would probably have 17.x on it by then.

BOFH: The Boss, the floppy and the work 'experience'

We love college kids

The first thing they learn is how to make proper coffee. The second thing they learn is how everyone of the SysAdmins likes their coffee.

Once they've mastered that, they learn how to push change requests back on the requester for any asinine reason we can come up with.

You know, true IT work.

The majik in the box

This one time, a fellow tech and I were called to look at this one particularly thick headed users computer. She had created a document, saved said document to the file share and then for some unknown reason, deleted said document.

VSS only runs a couple time a day and she missed the window.

When asked (by her boss) how can something like this be prevented in the future, my colleague answered about a millisecond before I did. Don't delete it in the first place. You wouldn't believe the shit storm that caused because that particular boss thought they were someone not to trifle with.

It ain't rocket science... Yeah, that remark got him in trouble latter on too.

Say you have some counter measures setup that might kill the offending system(s)/network(s). What then?
