Internet industry freaks out over proposed unlimited price hikes on .org domain names

Steven Guenther

More important - stop temp holding of domains

There is a way to grab a domain name for a couple days, to see if you like it.

There are companies that watch for name searches and grab those domains and hold them for ransom.

They should have to pay to hold them for even a day. That would cut the dirt bags out of that process.

If you get rid of don't understand the value of domain names look at whitehouse.gov vs whitehouse.sex.

There are dirt bags that camp out on misspellings of popular sites.

Google does not give page rankings for free, so the site would have to pay to be found.

I know of a couple charities and non-profits that have lots of page hits, without generating income.

This would be a great place to put lots of windmills to power those things.

Maybe a new Nuclear power plant, or is that too futuristic for the data managers?

Bizarre mouse behaviour

The company I worked for gave out mouse pads at trade shows.

They were really cool looking with holograms on the front.

They worked well with the old mice with balls.

When the optical mice came along, the holograms played havoc with them.

UK tech's gender pay gap: HP Inc closest to parity with 1.8% sliver – Civica, Huawei, Siemens straddle 40% chasm

Steven Guenther

What about hours worked

Does this survey look into the number of hours worked per week gap?

Others have found men working more hours, a greater differential than the wage difference on a title by title comparison.

Of course just adding in the CEO's pay and the cleaning crew with no control of the titles, sure shows a big difference.

Amazon exec tells UK peers: No, we don't want to be dominant. Also, we don't fancy being taxed on revenues

IP valuation

How do you make a real valuation of the IP the company is "Leasing" from the Irish.

Currently, they make it equal to the profits in the other countries, thus yielding zero profit in that country.

The IP should have a set realistic value. But that requires brains and balls, neither of which any politician has.

The march of Amazon Business has resellers quaking in their booties

Re: This is new news?

The new and extra EVIL part is allowing knockoffs to be sold by Chinese and others. You put your product into the store, and someone else puts in a cheaper version. The product fails, the customer sends you the RMA. WTF?? If you are on Amazon, you are hard pressed to deny the return. Amazon does not police the market place, it is not in their interest. They just ship and do not provide any protections other than strong arming the domestic vendors.

Steven Guenther

Re: In related news....

Sears was getting OUT of mail order when Amazon was starting up.

If they had put the Wish Book on line and put some effort into it.....

Re: Housing problem

But who would be the liberal voters of tomorrow? You have to pay them to breed, so you have future voters. If only workers had children, then those kids would value work and through the UBI out the window, and the politicians with it.

Steven Guenther

UBI and Open Border are both bad ideas

UBI and Open Border are both bad ideas but they work REALLY BAD TOGETHER.

IF you have a small, well educated, homogeneous society, (like Silicon Valley) you might get away with it. But when you try to do it in south Texas or someplace with loads of border crossers that have no education and no stake in the society. It will quickly become untenable.

How long does a person have to be in the country to get the UBI? Do they have to stay in the country to continue getting it (can retirees spend some time in Mexico?) ?

Get a constant flow from South America, signing up for the benefits and heading home.

Maybe we could add all of China and India to the benefits list if Mexico is not crippling enough.

Double Dutch - Irish Twist

They are not giving profits to Irish branch, they are paying for licenses. The Irish License is a Before tax expense that the India office has to pay. Just because that expense matches up to the profit of the branch, it only sounds fishy. This kind of EVIL SCAM is what Trump is trying to protect the US from.

Female CEO

So they NEED to get a female CEO to show the world how progressive they are.

Let him see HIS JOB on the block.

Good job, everyone. We're making AI just as tediously racist and sexist as ourselves

Steven Guenther

Re: Lysenko on the phone

The other option is the "Lathe of Heaven" solution. Genetically change all people to be gray.

When the world is all one genotype there will be less discrimination. Except that people will always prefer those that have similar backgrounds.

The thing that really worries the liberal types is that perhaps the AI is revealing real truths.

Maybe women prefer arts and Japs are better at Maths.

Maybe people are actually different.

Can you ethically suggest a woman pursue a career in tech?

Steven Guenther

"We need to promote women disproportionately, pay them equally or better..." so, when you do run across a woman in a high position, you know she is just there because of her ovaries.

Re: Typically wrong.

This is what makes the term "Software Engineer" such a joke. Does anyone using that title, actually have a PE? Does IEEE have standards for "Software Engineer" like they do for other engineers?

You can get specs on a building, can you get them for the new car? or new smartphone?

When you build a bridge, it is used that way for decades. What is the last piece of software you have used that is over a decade old without a change? How about 50 years old, we have bridges that are CENTURIES old without a change. It is the changeability that makes software more difficult.

US may disable all in-car mobile phones

Steven Guenther

passengers too?

When I call my wife, my daughter answers the phone and acts as receptionist when they are on the road. Will this be disabled? Small towns use cell phones for emergency vehicles. Will this be disabled too? How about no cell phone in the automobile after an accident? Treat them like drunk drivers because they are also people with no self control. Drunks get breathilizers in their cars, put a cell scrambler in distracted driver's car. (not mine)

US opts out of carbon trading

Steven Guenther

Important detail missing

Where is the proof that Cap and Trade really lowers the amount of pollution in the air? It is a money maker for traders, and a way for politicians to pay off donors. Adding complexity only makes it easier to corrupt. Simplify the system, make it transparent and it will improve.
