Remember bureaus?

Those readers with long memories may recall when businesses without their own IT staff, would entrust their data to the local computer bureau. Deja vu? Within a few years they realised they would be better of doing the processing in-hose. I can't recall why this was, maybe other readers can.

Didn't install a safety-critical driverless car patch? Bye, insurance!

Re: It really

In the UK it is the driver that has the insurance, not the car. So will a non driver (no license/blind/under age) be able to buy a 'driverless' vehicle and run it without any insurance?

Ofcom issues stern warning over fake caller number ID scam

Re: Why it is unclear ...

What annoys me is that calls from a known fake CLI are put through, I get calls from a different 023 0xxx xxxx number every day (different every time), but no subscriber number can begin with zero or one, so definitely spam/scam/illegal. I've tried to report this but nobody claims to be responsible. Such calls should be put through to a recording that never hangs up and charges ar 09xx rates.

We're not saying we're living in a simulation but someone's simulated the universe in a computer

Re: "The universe is made up of about 23 per cent dark matter and 72 per cent dark energy"

So not only are the living things on our planet, an infinitessimally tiny fraction of the matter we can observe in our universe, but also a fraction of the actual contents of the universe, and our observable universe is only one infinityeth of the entire uinverse amongst the infinite number of parallel universes.

On small scales, the universe appears clumpy.

"On small scales, the universe appears clumpy."

How do we know what counts as small, maybe beyond the 'tiny' limit of the observable universe it's also clumpy and what we see is a mere isotropic clump. Isn't there infinite light years in every direction?

Is security even possible?

I seriously doubt that complete security is even possible. A typical modest PC has 10^10,000,000,000 possible states, that's a number with 10 trillion digits. And if you add a hard drive, the number of possible states is a number with a quadrillion digits. Then if you connect it to the internet . . .
