If you're new to Hadoop, you may not know that the majority of Hadoop deployments today are running on bare-metal "in your own DC". The traditional model for large distributed workloads like Hadoop is to purchase commodity hardware, then install the software on dedicated servers and operate it in your own DC.

And although AWS does have an offer (EMR) for Hadoop-as-a-Service in the cloud, many organizations don't want to move massive volumes of data into a public cloud service - for reasons of governance, security, privacy, and "data gravity" (i.e. the cost and resources required to move or copy data from where it resides).

Thus the need for an on-premises option with dynamic compute clusters for Hadoop. It's a game changer.
