Great days in 1995 were spent with my first Slackware install. Finding exactly the right kit to run it, installing over 64K leased line. Giving up and taking computer on a London bus to install on the university network where the mirror was located!

When they added the .uk domain to the .co.uk domain, they were effectively holding domain owners to ransom.
It's amusing that it is illegal for me to register variants of domains and then go to the owner of the original domain and ask for cash. This is what Nominet did with the .uk addition.
This extra cash would have given them quite a war chest to grow the business.

Most of the tools like cfengine, puppet and chef are useful for some people with very uniform and large infrastructure. But for a lot of people it is over complex nonsense. Most are using because it is fashionable. If you know what you are doing you can do much much more with some scripts and making custom packages with apt-get.
Greed takes over yet again. Self agreement and benchmarking valuations on user numbers of other loss making services. Like building on someone else's sand.
Having lots of users for free apps and services != value when everyone has that.
Atlassian will ride the storm though, they are selling stuff that people value.
Agreed. We have the newer atom based blades. Fantastic engineering and meets our needs perfectly.
It has always amazed me how slow supermicro has been to catch on with people. I guess the buying cycle and process at lots of potential large organisations precludes then? It's always easier to get more from same place
Good point, there will always be people needed to facilitate a sale for certain industries and apps. However, a change in the dynamic of sales is enough to make the channel market alter.
Certain markets like telephony might be decimated by cloud.
Personally, I believe there will always be a role for smart people and companies to bridge the online and the real world. But from my experience there are too many sales people with the wrong skills at the moment to cope with the move.
It's not just possible price rises with the mergers. Mobile is taking over and will replace much of the fixed landscape over the next 10 years or so. There is a competition issue here too.
The mobile market has no wholesale or easy access to build new services other than reselling what's there already. Unlike the fixed market which is regulated and does have vibrant wholesale offerings.
Ofcom need to address mobile wholesale in the near future and even more so if there are less players.
This sort of idea would go far if the mobile networks didn't block VoIP on their 3g networks or have terms that say no VoIP. Even today the blocking is in place on some networks. This means the simple app doesn't work for all users and doesn't fly.
I know people working in this area but they ain't discount providers!
