Incoming! Microsoft unleashes more fixes for Windows 10 October 2018 Update

thomas k

Finally safe to download 1809 then?

I've just been clicking "remind me later".

Memo to Microsoft: Windows 10 is broken, and the fixes can't wait

thomas k

*gulp*

I am at this very moment waiting for UPS to deliver a new HP PC. Definitely low-end - Ryzen 3 1200 with Radeon RX550 - but a step up from the Core i3 with integrated 515 graphics I'm using now. Almost afraid to connect it to the interwebs when I set it up.

I must say, however, that I didn't experience any issues with the October update on my Lenovo.

Finally. The palm-sized Palm phone is back. And it will, er, save you from your real smartphone

No, the Mirai botnet masters aren't going to jail. Why? 'Cos they help Feds nab cyber-crims

thomas k

Mirai ...

Not to be confused with Miruai (Seaweed), a very dark green fountain pen ink from Sailor.

Re: Alas, no magic after all

Yes, today it wanted to restart and went through the usual fol de rol.

thomas k

70 updates with no restart?! What magic is this?

Went to Security Center, it said "updates pending" so I clicked the "update now" button and went back to reading the article. Suddenly there was a tweedle sound, the page went blank, then reloaded - that was it.

Peace pays dividend for OpenWRT as 'baseline' release lands on servers

thomas k

No love for Netgear WNDR4500v3

openWRT stops at the 4300 and dd-WRT stops at 4500v2 :( I was running gargoyle on the netgear 3700 and it really helped with buffer bloat on TWC. Should've checked the compatibility lists before purchasing it's replacement.

Some of you really don't want Windows 10's April 2018 update on your rigs

thomas k

No problems but ...

I didn't experience any problems, knock on wood, but the new, huge (and unresizable) Favorites panel in Edge so annoyed me that I switched to Opera. Couldn't be happier (even though Favorites are even more cumbersome). Funny thing is that I had finally started using Edge for everything, instead of IE11.

Which? calls for compensation for users hit by Windows 10 woes

thomas k

Went ok but ...

Went ok for me - no show stopping bugs, at least - but I found the changes they made to Edge so annoying that I decided to try Opera. I couldn't be happier with it.

Amazon warns you have 30 days before Music Storage files bloodbath

thomas k

Re: It's 250 tracks, not songs

I used this to my advantage to upload a lot of my classical stuff where a whole work might be a single 100 Mb track, operas might have each act as one track, etc. I'm pretty sure this isn't quite what Amazon had in mind.

Any word on pricing? A 'vacation' phone is all I need, it could well replace the Nokia 520 I'm using now.

California Senate OKs net neutrality law, gives FCC cold hard long stare

thomas k

All well and good but...

How about doing something to engender actual, meaningful competition in the broadband market. We're still hostage to monopolies (duopolies if we're lucky). Having multiple ISPs competing for our money might just solve the neutrality problem by itself.

Acronis: Ransomware protection! Get yer free ransomware protection!

thomas k

While the software is free ...

You have to create an Acronis account to use it - to receive updates and such, you know.

Still, decided to try it out and it warned me of 3 suspicious processes right off the bat - Intel Security Assistant, some Samsung printer thingie and cmd.exe.

Re: most people work at far below their capacity

Must be nice to work in a place like that. While every place has its share of shirkers and slackers, the hotels I've worked all seem to have a policy of 'if it takes 4 people to do the work, only hire three' and, between call-outs (pretty common with the youngsters) and/or high turnover (due to the high workload), you frequently have to make do with 2.

Microsoft scoops Search UI out from the gaping black maw of Cortana

thomas k

I recently discovered I could hide that search box on the taskbar, so I did. It seemed redundant since there's a search box at the bottom of the start menu just above the start button.

More are paying to stream music, but YouTube still holds the value gap

thomas k

Re: YouTube for Music

"Is it just me being old, that I feel that streaming video just for the audio is a waste of perfectly good bandwidth?"

YouTube is a god-send for classical music lovers and well worth the waste of a little bandwidth. From live performance to recorded music from both the labels themselves and user-uploaded, we're given the opportunity to hear things we'd likely never otherwise have. Our favorite chestnuts by household names to the once-famous who've fallen out of favor to composers I've never heard of, it's truly an embarrassment of riches, like dying and going to heaven.

scratchtrump.com took me to a page displaying the title "Kitten Feed" where I was Rick-rolled.
