Huawei Mate 20 Pro: If you can stomach the nagware and price, it may be Droid of the Year

Are you accidently swiping the annoying 'HiSearch' feature on your new Huawei Mate 20 Pro?

Well, now you can safely remove it and it's not that hard if you pay attention to the instructions below.

(It may work on other Mate 20s but I've only tested it on my phone.)

1) Download the ADB zip file to your Windows desktop computer or laptop.

Unzip the contents of the zip file to your desktop. There will be a folder called 'platform-tools'.

Direct link to the ADB zip file is here:

2) Connect your phone to the computer and enable USB Debugging on your phone.

(There will be a pop up on your phone asking you to do this.)

Open the 'platform-tools' folder that you just unzipped and open a 'command prompt' from inside that folder.

Put your mouse somewhere in the folder, hold 'shift' and right click your mouse.

Select 'Open command window here'

3) Type "adb devices" then enter.

This just proves that you are connected to your phone.

The long ID number of your phone will show up if you are.

4) Type "adb Shell" then enter.

5) Type "pm list packages" then enter.

This will show you a long list of packages installed on your phone.

6) Type "pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.huawei.search" then enter.

7) Did you see the word "Success"?

8) You did it. Aren't you clever! No more accidental 'HiSearch' swipes on your phone.

Huawei used cheap-as-chips chips in some P10s, now buyers want to boil it in oil

I bought a P9 and it works just fine... but after hearing this latest disaster from this company I'll return obediently to the Samsung fold for future purchases. China, eh? Their slogan for anything should just be... "It's shit, innit!"

Huawei P10 Plus: The bigger brother is the real contender

memory specs

I have the P9 and I'll hold off on the P10, because...

I really want Huawei to come clean on memory specs and also, compared the new Samsung rival, the design does seem 'old school' already!

The P11 will probably be my next phone.

Windows 10 Creators Update general rollout begins with a privacy dialogue

It would be nice if Windows could find a way to remember my chosen programs for each file type every time they do an update. This latest update is a big yawn... no noticeable changes except I have to change all the default programs AGAIN for movies, music and images, etc...

Well, the leftie loonies aren't going to roll over and play dead are they! Losing has to be the fault of someone else, right? It seems they are turning to political self-flagellation now... It's fun to watch, though!

Bless their hearts... they won the 'popular vote' though... except the campaign (on BOTH sides) was fought for ELECTORAL votes! The best (and poorest) campaign easily won that and it's all the fault of Russians, news feeds on Facebook and the FBI for having the cheek to do their jobs!

I'm lovin' it!

I wish...

I wish there was an operating system that I could install that could run all my programs... AND DO NOTHING ELSE! No 'apps', no unwanted updates, no data harvesting, no bloatware... And have ONE control panel, an easy basic start menu and a 'windows explorer' for 2016, not 1995.

The idea that Microsoft builds products based on user feedback is a joke.

Wakey wakey, app developers. Mobile ad blocking will kill you all

Re: Tricky problem.

I buy plenty of apps here in Thailand. I have a PAYG sim card and it takes the cost from that. No CC numbers - no worries.

Re: An ad blocker is the only app I'd pay for

I don't mind paying for apps. I have bought a few cheapies in the past.

I DO object to ads and will do everything in my power to avoid them.

US still lagging on broadband but FCC promises change is coming

Re: Nothing new here ...

That old 'but you're isolated in a rural area" excuse doesn't hold water.

I live in Thailand which is much MUCH more rural and the entire country is blanketed with coverage.

Americans have lazy phone companies who are getting rich off of ancient technology. There's no reason for America to upgrade to normal standards and speeds that the rest of the Western world enjoy because they are paying through the nose for crap.

Too far behind

Anyone visiting the US would be very surprised at how ancient the phone infrastructure is compared to other Western countries.

The situation is exacerbated by having a couple of companies who control everything. The Americans seem happy to put up with crippled phones that the rest of the world has long since abandoned or would refuse to buy, too.

I used to think that "no bars" was just a plot device for scary movies - but if you go be prepared to have rubbish coverage and extremely poor voice quality as well as miserably slow streaming speeds.

Five technologies you shouldn't bother looking out for in 2016

Spot on... and all very well put.

Well, get 'em whilst ye may.

In a couple of years time all the 'space' you need will be delivered soldered on to motherboards and extra space will be sold as 'internal 'cards' NOT drives.

Internal 'drives' are very much a thing of the past...well, they soon will be.

Doctor Who returns to our screens next week – so, WHO is the worst Time Lord of them all?

In order...

Only Doctors worth a mention are...

1 - Tom Baker

2 - Jon Pertwee

3 - Matt Smith

The rest were all rubbish.

So, the article would have been much shorter if it had been 'Who is the best doctor.'!

It was crap before Jon Pertwee and it was crap after Tom baker.

But worst of all were the stupid teenagers Eccleston and the small Scottish one that came after him. All they did was run around corridors and shout like girls. Pure shite!

The weekly fawning...

I'm now on episode three of The Register's weekly fawning over this asinine and un-watchable BBC politically correct homage to what used to be a bloody good TV program.

Your misguided and child-like unwavering belief that this trashy bollocks is worth so much effort and page space is nothing short of spectacular.

Your authority on other things (normally held in high regard) are diminished by this fervent and all-consuming crush on a kid's TV show which has been raped, then murdered and then horribly mutilated since it's disastrous reboot at the turn of the century.

If you are going to advertise at least be honest about it and stick a label at the top of the page.
