Microsoft, Google, Slack, Zoom et al struggling to deal with a spike in remote tools thanks to coronavirus

As schools shut down in the US and more people strain the consumer network all video and SaaS services will be affected for the next 2 weeks starting Monday.

Virtualization juggernaut VMware hits the CPU turbo button for licensing costs

Although this sounds bad, i'm not sure how many IT shops are actually running 32 core CPUs. I've talked to many people at VMworld and they are still on 15:1 maybe 30:1 host to VM ratios. Most people trade depth for less risk. I know plenty of people that are just getting HPE DL360 with 12 - 16 core to build their stack. I'm sure the cost of a 32+ core server is prohibitive for most orgs.

We're free in 3... 2... 1! Amazon unhooks its last Oracle database, nothing breaks and life goes on

Re: Unlike Aurora

Exactly! Try migrating out after spending years to get on the platform. I'm taking my lead from Walmart which doesn't try to get you to pay for their IT systems with AWS.

More Unicorn Poop

This sounded like a pissing match between some big egos. In the end Amazon still uses Oracle for some of its functions. Most of us don't have the luxury of unlimited resources including capital and labor to make the transition. We can't find the skills to have people run open source databases and AWS "services" and if we do we certainly can't keep them.

I'd rather lock in to a company that has a proven track record, a huge labor pool, and enterprise class support versus a company that tells you to just build it. As the old saying goes "If it ain't broke..."

I too work for a company that lets us choose between a PC or Mac, including Surface. I notice most of the older employees choose PC's while the younger generation chooses a Mac. I see 5 reasons people choose a Mac:

1. It seems to be less locked down versus the PC.

2. Connectivity to peripheral (particularly projectors and big monitors) seems to work better.

3. As mobile and python based development has exploded I tend to see more Mac adoption.

4. It integrates well with their iPhone allowing usage of iMessage, Browser Continuity, and iTunes.

5. The MacBook is more premium hardware than the PC offered to the employee.

I think Windows 10 will make the difference for a lot of shops going forward. It's much more stable, easier to update and the fact you can buy Microsoft based hardware now is a great step forward. Surface Books, Laptops, Desks and Pros are great steps in the right direction of reestablishing cool.

More importantly MS has made a great effort with Cortana and Edge to be able to sync better with mobile which was a big reason for more people choosing Apple laptops.

The axeman strikes again: Microsoft has real commitment issues

Precursor to an Acquisition?

To quote Ricky Bobby, “If you ain’t first, you’re last!” Personally I think it’s good to fail fast and dump a product that will affect the bottom line as the music company gouges them for licensing. Pandora, Soundcloud, and Tidal are also struggling to survive, easier to acquire than compete.

Spotify would be a great acquisition just like LinkedIn was for Nadella. Cloudy days ahead!

But the Phones are Upgradable!?!

This whole mess being played out in the press is pretty shady. The phones that were issued are upgradable to Windows 10 mobile. No matter the OS, apps need to be patched, upgraded, and maintained to be in lockstep with new OS platforms. Conversion to UWP is supposed to be pretty easy.

Windows 10 mobile is about 2 years old. There has been time to plan an upgrade. The Elite x3 or Alcatel are valid options for the next 2 years. By that time Windows will be on its next device.

RIM still has active contracts so why not Microsoft. She was fiscally responsible if not smooth. It sounds like someone really wants iPhones and are throwing this lady under the bus along the way.

Reg man confesses: I took my wife out to choose a laptop for Xmas. NOOOO

A Little High on the Horse

I think its a little bit of your ego at play here. Millions of people switch OS's and try new apps all of the time without having to provide endless IT support. My wife who is COMPLETELY non-technical has managed to use a Chromebook for almost 2 years after switching from Apple devices and Windows devices years before that. Our kids use Chromebooks exclusively which saves me from having to clean their machines every month.

Most people don't need advanced word processing or productivity suites. Lots of Apple users are fine with iWork. Not a killer switch to use Docs. Same with switching from iTunes to Google Music. Saving to a network drive versus a local drive is something IT folks cherish because its easier to manage as well.

Familiarity breeds contempt. While the ChromeOS & Chromebook may not work for you it will probably work just fine for her and she will love the color!

I don't expect every person is a fit for ChromeOS just like every person is not a fit for Linux, OSX, or Windows. Get off your high horse and let her enjoy her device! The Get Help app makes it really straightforward to answer her questions...
