Old-school cruel: Dodgy PDF email attachments enjoying a renaissance

PDFs nogo in FF - Vivaldi OK

Just in case anyone's interested - PDFs don't open any more for me in Firefox ( with with add blocker, on Windows 7) so I have switched default PDF application to Vivaldi - works fine. Useful for tax and other docs from secure sites.

Thumbs up for the classical reference. elReg authors are not all unliterate, as it were.

Not to mention my QBasic executables, vintage DOS 3.

Next up will be VirtualBox for Mint so I don't have to keep dodging the WinX bullet.

Re: Can we ditch the silly political correctness in reg articles

" ...an imaginary individual in a context where their sex is irrelevant." (Dave 126)

Three cheers for avoiding the mealy-mouthed term "gender" when what's under discussion is the difference between male and female (namely sex). In my book, "gender" is a grammatical concept, not an anatomical one. As in German: das Madchen (gender = neuter) refers to a little girl (sex = female).

This would be the same Maxwell who invented a daemon to watch, wait and open a door to let only hot (speedy) particles go from one chamber into another and only cool particles go in the opposite direction, thus contravening the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics. (He knew it wouldn't work of course, because measuring the speed changed the entropy of the system.)

Nowadays, daemons which watch, wait and do things, are alive and well in Unix systems. Their names end in "d". (systemd, etc, anyone ?)

Alway good to have a second option ...

Tuesday afternoon (9th) - couldn't get back onto a foreign site to complete a visa application I'd started earlier in the day. Web site gone unobtainable / down.

(House is on BT Internet in Central Scotland; router is not a BT jobby )

Could see foreign site OK through 3G via my mobe. Ergo - routing fail by BT ?

Changed my (non-BT) router to use other DNS services:

Prim'y DNS: ... 8.8.8.8 ... ... ... ... ... Google

Secondary: ... 208.267.222.222 ... OpenDNS

Success! Didn't even have to tinker with PC's Network settings.

Icon: Didn't fancy BT parentally controlling my connection, therefore non-BT router

Also, when I swapped to non-BT router, my download speed increased by 30% = Win + Win!

Probably won't bother to revert ...
