Texting worse for drivers than drink or drugs

Liam

hmmmm

@ "Let's just observe that women actually pay less for their car insurance. And insurance is based on real measured statistics. So why do women pay less for their car insurance? Because they generally have fewer accidents, and the ones they have cause less damage. As good a measure of "safer drivers" as I know."

playing devils advocate here... but strictly not right...

i think most people will agree that men drive, generally, a lot more miles per year (how many mums do the driving as opposed to dad, how many female reps, salespeople do you see?)

so maybe women are less likely to have an accident but the fact is they drive much less... so if you do an average of miles/crash you would get a more realistic (gu)estimate.

i can also say that the vast majority of women drivers i know are far from safe... why the hell does my mum feel the need to talk with her hands whilst driving?

Liam

what i would like to know is...

if being stoned hampers you soooo much how come i can kick ass on a ps3 after a 12 hour session? i can happily fly round tracks at 200mph fine.

i would also like to know their definition of 'drunk' - is that the over the limit 1 pint drunk? or actually steaming drunk? as im considerably less coordinated after a skinful that i am when stoned (btw - i dont drink/smoke and drive)

also a lot of people have admitted to texting whilst driving... is that when crawling along at 10mph in towns or doing 80 on a motorway?

ahhh dont you love stats!

"A pervasive developmental disorder, Asperger syndrome is distinguished by a pattern of symptoms rather than a single symptom. It is characterized by qualitative impairment in social interaction, by stereotyped and restricted patterns of behavior, activities and interests, and by no clinically significant delay in cognitive development or general delay in language.[13] Intense preoccupation with a narrow subject, one-sided verbosity, restricted prosody, and physical clumsiness are typical of the condition, but are not required for diagnosis.[4]"

FROM WIKIPEDIA - but nothing there that makes someone do something they KNOW is wrong and would get fuckered for... sounds like really mild autism to me... certainly doesnt sound like a defence against hacking the US gov! i know they need hacking to save the rest of the world but be more careful eh matey!

Epilepsy tests delay PS3 videogame launch

Liam

nanny state!!!

lets ban everything that might cause some distress to a tiny minority of people.

OR how about anyone with this type of problem should be aware of their condition and not make everyone else suffer?

why cant people take some responsibility for themselves rather than try to make everyone else pander to their needs. sheesh. i cite the US' blame culture as the cause behind all this. imagine if 20 years ago you would have seen an advert like:

' i was walking down the street and fell over - ive sued the council for 20 grand'

look where you are going you frikkin idiot!

BT lobbies Welsh Assembly for superfast broadband subsidies

Liam

yup - english subsidies again

im seriously getting pissed off with subsidising scotland and wales... when england is the shittest of the 3 now...

MS confirms European Xbox 360 price cuts

Liam

wtf?

the arcade only does composite out?

might as well get a bloody wii!

what level of 360 does proper hd output? which has a hdmi? optical out?

Liam

yup...

not a chance of me getting one.

i was thinking of getting a cheapy one to see how it compares to my ps3 (different games etc) but a £20 price cut on the £230 model (isnt this the only one with a hd - thats the only one of any use?) is only a few quid less than a ps3!

HMV keeps Warhammer-ers from goblins

Liam
Flame

oh well...

maybe they can look for a girlfriend while the code arrives, or even move out of their mums house? :)

seriously - those games only seem to be played by compulsive obsessives with no social skills

/me ducks as i guess that refers to a lot of techies!

Lehmans techies start job hunt

Liam

it would be interesting to know...

how much the techies got for a bonus last year - considering that the company reportedly gave average bonuses of 300+k! last year

OMFG, what have you done?

Liam

finally - fixed width! :)

finally those of us with decent monitors wont be forced to squish everything up so the page isnt too wide to read.

most web devs never seem to use % widths as you never know what it will look like for everyone.

the new icons suck tho... glad the old ones are back too?

Demand drops for games consoles Stateside

Liam

as paul said...

surely this might just show that people who wanted them already have them?

its not like you need to re-buy them every year is it? i mean M$ seem to give you a free 360 every x months when the old one dies!

HMMM

come on - we all know its Chelsea who are the gay ones :)

Liam

@ Oh and we all know smokers get the hot chicks :)

yup :)

i also own my house - without any financial help from anybody. my g/f is 10 years younger than me (im 33), bi-sexual and a horny beast...

the only 'prose' i read is code and the backs of dvd cases :)

Liam

hmmmm

"A study by the National Literacy Trust claims to demonstrate that literate people are less likely to be still living with their parents, glumly smoking heavily as they contemplate their inability to attract a long-term partner, than those who struggle with reading."

bollocks! as we all know the thickies get a lass pregnant at 15 - are in a council house by 16 and by 20 have another 5 kids due to the 'shagging standing up method of contraception' they believe works!

im my experience its the very literate that often lack any social skills and live with their mums... i bet loads of reg readers (well, bottom level techies) live with their parents.

how the hell

can she think she is entitled to $250k?

this just enforces the rest of the world view that americans are greedy, selfish bastards out to take what they can....

of course not everyone in the US is like that - some are visiting from canada :)

Brits are Europe's biggest gadget buyers - official

Liam

most money spent != biggest gadget buyers

all this means is that we are being more ripped off than most people.

for example why we can buy the same devices for the same £ as $ - double the price!

look at all consoles and it equipment.

look at how much more gadgets cost to us that in asia...

its just confirming ripoff britain

PA Consulting consulting: 1 cockup & UK gov: countless...

wonder if i'll have the balls to vote liberal this time (then cross my fingers for few years)

we now know why people become MPs (apart from magalomania). they are simply too useless to work in industry!

Academic wants to 'free up' English spelling

Liam

hmmmm

@ He has some good ideas for modest reform

"Lots of British posters here. You can always spot them in language discussions because almost all British people are ignorant about language matters" - or maybe its because its an english website? <sigh>

"In the US, which is more progressive on this front, a number of reforms have been made, " - you mean the yanks can't spell so now our language (the one seemingly known now as international english) has been so bastardised by the merkins we should all suffer. NO! you take our language - fuck it up then expect us to change... who is the ignorant one here?

the fact there is so much confusion is that YOU use a different version of english to the rest of the world - if bloody MS didnt insinuate that US english was proper english and international english was some weird variation we wouldnt be in this predicament.

im happy for some reform - such as the rule 'i before e except after c' - well and loads of other examples that come to mind! this does seem stupid to me.

does this also mean we have to speak like core america and seemingly use so many double negatives in a sentence that the meaning is lost. 'i aint never done nothing' springs to mind frequently as well as 'i ain't never'

if we dumb down the spelling now will kids know the differences from there, their they're etc? the english language, as said before, is full of nuances and subtle variations. surely any dumbing down just alienated the vast amount of people who have master the language already?

@ Dan Skriv "Maybe this is another sort coming of the education system on your little island" - erm england isnt an island - britain is - but we arent talking about british language are we? talking about britain we would have to include gaelic (the language spoken by 2 people in scotland (polish is more widely spoken up there)) and that farcicle language that is welsh... :)

@ "bunch of tards." - yes, lets all talk txt spk - mch btr innit?

Liam

b0ll0kz

this is a brilliant idea

why also not teach kids that 2+2 is anything they want

if kids are too thick to learn to spell why not make it so they dont bother doing maths either?

tell you what - just let them do music, art, acting and media and sack everything else off? since that is what 90% of kids seem to do at degree now (i.e. pointless degrees that millions of people have already and cant find work)

all this and many scandenavian kids can read and write 4 or 5 languages better than most english kids can write English. and we wonder why we have the most stupid kids in europe.

just watching things like match of the day you realise how many people still dont understand the simple principle of tense.

i never understood the problems with apostrophes - whats the big deal? its not rocket science is it? it helps the reader get a better idea of what is meant.

as mentioned above phonetic simply wont work in places with strong accents such as newcastle, various parts of yorkshire, birmingham & liverpool

i, myself, come from lincoln. thats about smack bang in the middle of the country - to the right hand side. in my opinion its got the least noticable accent of anywhere ive been in the UK (most major towns and loads of little ones) - i dont pronounce the silly way the southerners do (grass isnt pronounced grarse) but dont have a northern accent either - its very neutral. phonetics would work ok round here but so many regions completely make their own pronunciation up

maybe if we had a decent education system we would be ok - in sweden they dont start school until 7 but by the age of about 10 they can speak several languages and are probably more intelligent than most english 12-13 year olds. how the hell does that work? in 3 years they learn more than english kids can in double that!

Microsoft slashes US Xbox 360 to sub-Wii price

Liam

@ Adam Buckland

thats odd - our wii hasnt been used since before xmas!!! its a crappy little thing. its ok for kids and as a novelty but ive yet to find a decent proper game on it. wheras my ps3 is on most nights - we are currently playing the excellent ps1 game worms on it a lot lol... even the mrs loves worms :)

im tempted to get a cheapy 360 due to M$ buying up games companies and limiting games coming out on the ps3...

fix the fact that we cant run it on our company machines.

i installed it on home machine last night and it fliers superspeed. much faster than ie and especially FF :)

Burned by Chrome - Fire put out

Liam

not an issue...

since on the 2 machines ive tried it on it manages to crash and burn before its done much. i just get a lovely dead tab icon.

now, why the hell do i get this on 2 very different xp machines??? is the question!

PC Gamers get Bill of Rights

Liam

hmmmm

:: Gamers shall have the right to return games that don't work with their computers for a full refund. - OR take it back after installing, grabbing the key and using a crack for no cd?

:: Gamers shall have the right to demand that games be released in a finished state. - define 'finished'? no pc game can guarantee that all h/w will work with it as its impossible to test. maybe they should use a more mainstream process, does it work on nvidia and amd gfx cards, amd and intel chipsets (as others are less well used - especially in gaming pcs)

:: Gamers shall have the right to expect meaningful updates after a game's release. - erm... if a finished game is released why expect updates?

:: Gamers shall have the right that games which are installed to the hard drive shall not require a CD/DVD to remain in the drive to play. - so they can lend the cd to everyone? surely this is a means of copy protection?

well, she will do 3 months... to be honest she should get more - stealing from an ill pensioner! plus they have no idea how much cash had gone over a longer amount of time... how many other people has she done this to?

she would get more like 2+ years for both of what you mentioned above

Librarian of child abuse networking site jailed indefinitely

good to see....

that a paedo like this is seen in the eys of the law as about as bad as soemone who smokes pot - similar sentences for posession of anything more than a few doobies...

good to see paedophiles in the same category as people who do no harm to society at all...

i say stick em in prison general population and let the cons do us all a favour... why the hell should people like him get protection more than anyone else!

French cough in to filthy restaurants

Liam

hmmm

Tired of RRoD taunts? Turn your Xbox 360 into a PC

Liam

hmmm

@ thomas k.

im sure they do - lian-li have been making alu cases for years. they do all sorts... some really cool media cases for your media pcs#

i think it looks pretty sweet to be honest.

@ "is that worth £75 exactly, given the price of generic PC cases these days? Given, it's not exactly the same as a PC case but still, I can't see where that price tag is coming from for a metal box." - erm... i know they are expensive but they were designed for overclockers. basically alu is great for heat dissipation, meaning less fans and less pc noise.

@ "Of course, if they'd bought a PS3 in the first place, they wouldn't have the issues with overheating, noisy fans and optical drives anyway. Flame on..." - wtf? my ps3 gets well-noisy. although i airsrayed it yesterday so hopefully its much quieter now!

@ "Oh, and it's $150, not £150 - I know that we get a bum rap in the UK for these things, but doubling the value of it it pretty fecking unlikely." - wtf? havent you seen you can buy most US good for the same price in $ as we pay in £s? i mean most adobe s/w is more £ than $! work that one out!

lock em up forever - if your excuse is "a video game showed me how to do it" then you arent fit to be in society and should be deemed as a dangerous psycho.

what is they watched a film like hostel... would they go off torturing people for fun?

what if they saw a ww2 film... would they want to invade poland?

what if they saw a french ww2 film... would they instantly surrender at every available opportunity? lol

im sick of people using any escuse to try and get away with whatever they do. im sure all this has come from americas litergation nation philosophy. if i trip over some water in a shop its my fault for not looking where im going... not the shop.

and yes, as mentioned above the game doesnt who you how to make molys - just where to find them and an ability to throw them

people need to take account of their own actions. its a pity none of our politicians can do this though - not leading by example are they?

Cable broadband shines in Virgin Media Q2

Liam
Thumb Down

hmmmm

where are you guys that get max connections?

ive been on virgin/NTL cable bb for about 8 years now. went from feeling fast at 512k to now my 10mb line rarely even gets 400k/sec.... maybe its my ancient modem (ive had it 8 years!) but back then it apparently could handle 50mb

i would also like to know why my belkin gateway (not wireless) seems to slow down my conn by 1mb... if i remove it from the stack i get an extra 100k/sec...

im in lincoln btw - im guessing you guys with a decent connection are down south?

Snoop more, share less - Home Office spurns EU advice

the tories? the same people that have sold off everything good so we now pay god knows how much more for power, transport and water? the same lot that dont give a fuck about anyone earning less than £100,000? the same lot that only 100 years ago we seriously looking into the stererilisation of the working class?

or do we go with the libdems who are a more trustworthy bunch but have some stupid policies (£900/year road tax my ass!)

ASA rules against citing 'hits' in ads

Liam

hmmm

@ "Also, reread the article. It clearly explains why 5 million hits doesnt actually mean fuck all. The only really good metric is unique visitors, along with graphs of initial visit activity (users vs duration) and repeat visit activity."

- wtf? so im not counted as a tesco customer as ive been there before? arguably it should use transactions over hits but the fact is that 5million people viewed their web pages. the fact that some might visit more doesnt mean they have less customers... i agree it should be used in conjunction with other methods such as length of page views etc

ive been in plenty of shops and not bought things before... it doesnt mean im not a customer nor should it mean im ignored from visitor figures.

it is a hard one i accept. the web isnt a shop and cant be treated as such

Liam

huh?

@ "I do hate websites that decide they want to resize your browser window for you" - didnt do that for me... and im using ie7!

ive seen much worse websites than that. as someone who uses a high resolution (1920x1200) im always seeing dodgy websites. mainly due to idiot designers who dont realise what happens with tiling above their poxy 1024x768 resolution. or idiots using percentage widths for everything (oops hehe reg)

when looking at websites you shouldnt its nice to be able to squeeze in the sides to just read the text - hint hint reg :) all i get for that is massive adverts on some pages! (not comments oddly)

surely if a website gets 5millions hits its popular? isnt it? ok, so people might not buy a diamond. if 5 million people walk into a shop its still popular? im confused lol

In the same country in early March 2003, a South African man living in London and his [Massachusetts] girlfriend were stranded for six days by a powerful snowstorm.

Presumably "the same country" means the USA; or possibly Britain, or even conceivably South Africa.

yes, since the UK is well known for its snowstorms, as is south africa :)

Home wireless without the power trip

Liam

hmmmmm

i have to say i love the fact my ps3 remote is bluetooth, it means i can use it outside to change my music (and upstairs/bathroom if i want to answer Jeremy's question). as i have my home cinema kit in the corner of my lounge (with tv central) my V+ box never seems to work without me pointing the bloody thing into the corner. bluetooth or BT style remotes for everything could be very cool.

@ "you can point the remote almost completely behind you away from the television and it will still change channels/work as intended?" - you sure you arent bouncing the signal off walls in your house? i used to be able to switch on my lights in the lounge from the kitchen by bouncing the signal off 3 walls :)

btw - for a cool toy try remote controlled dimmer switches :) ive got them in my house :)

IBM gets hip with 'cool' Ubuntu PC deal

Liam

AHHHH

to be honest ive never seen $$Frontmatter - not sure i got to use 6.53 for webapps. i always tended to use agents to do anything fancy (as you control 100% of the markup).

Liam

hmmmm

@ ryan.... not as far as i know mate (regarding css) last i used was 6.5.5 or something. the problem being a main stylesheet. if you use a main stylesheet (which we did) you cannot then overrule with inline - which is the main point of CASCADING in css :)

who uses pass-thru html? you do for specific bits but almost all lotus webapps look shite. what i was saying is that i can make some nice ones - but due to lots of notes limitations its a pain. for example wrong DTDs that you have to overrule etc. the stupid pathing - having to add 0 views etc to links.

as i said i can make nice apps in notes but the lack of many normal design features (pixels, relative values etc) arent there.

im not anti-notes - made some nice cash for a few years developing in it. its just frustrating at times.

Liam

you only seem to know notes email

thats like saying windows in a platform for msn and nothing more.

ok, i quite often was heard saying far too loud 'god, notes is shit' but for appl development its actually not bad. their problem is that they didnt realise people might use it for a webapp server too. almost any notes app you see looks like a 5 year old has designed it. to be honest how many coders do you know who can actually design well?

i had the 'lovely' job of beautifying about 40 applications to make them look 1/2 decent. little things like measurements being in inches and cm (wtf? no pixel values for anything and how do CMs work for screen???) and saying notes had CSS support - when in fact inline css didnt work (wtf? thats why its cascading you idiots). DTD problems etc.

its not a bad platform to develop on and ive never found any other platform where you can design a pretty complex system in such a short time. the problem is that a lot of coders, along with being shit designers, do not understand usability.

Liam

lotus notes

was an odd one - you cannot devlop applications faster than with notes (i left my notes developer position in january)

the problem is that once you get something basic up you spend ages trying to make it not look shite - to be honest im the only person i ever knew who made some decent looking notes apps lol... let alone webapps - the problem is its a system that coders can use - often with no design skills at all. Not to mention all the little pain in the arse issues with the web too...

ahhh i remember those days lol

US woman celebrates cloning of 'precious Booger'

@ the @liam AC

lucky im an only child then :)

@ sarah - fair point. for me its the fact that a pitbull is bred for killing other dogs. it is bread from specific strains to do more damage and cleave more meat from the bone. its like saying a knife isnt dangerous as its never stabbed anyone. but it has the potential to be more dangerous than a spoon etc.

@ "Well, that's consistent" - to be honest sarah - life isnt consistent... i cannot make blanket statements as we all know there are expeptions to almost every rule. i know to a certain extent i seem to contradict myself but im talking about emotions and physical attributes - 2 very different things.

@ "Pit bulls aren't inherently dangerous as a breed" - BUT they are the most dangerous breed though, due to the damage they can do compared to every other breed

i know no animal is born bad - same with humans, for me its the potential in such animals. the fact that i bet almost all bad dog incidents are caused by naughty kids etc still doesnt detract from the fact its dangerous dog in the wrong circumstances or wrong hands. if the dog has a stroke or epileptic fit (which often makes them violent), which dog do you want in your house? a spaniel or a pitbull?

btw - im a dog lover - (not dog 'lover' just to clarify lol) so im not anti-dogs - i just know certain breeds arent really massively suitable for certain situations. and surely there are much better breeds for therapy dogs than a bred fighting dog?

Liam

@ @ me...

"And that is why my two brothers and I all like the same things. /sarcasm"

erm... i said "plus - oh great - more dangerous dogs on the planet. its wondering why they felt they could spend that amount of cash to get another dog that LOOKS like the old one. we all know your personality and character are defined by how you are raised... not by your genes necessarily" - i said necessarily...

its all to do with experiences in certain aspects of your life. what i am saying is that you can take 2 people - can even be done with twins - and due to the experiences in life they will turn out different.

certain key elements in life can fundamentally change you as a person. the fact that her old dog might not be a baby eating machine doesnt mean the little clones arent the spawn of satan :)

Liam

wtf?

"RNL Bio, which gained the exclusive licence for dog cloning from Seoul National University in June, performed the procedure. The company is taking legal action against a US firm for patent infringement." - wtf? you cant patent cloning of specific animals surely?

plus - oh great - more dangerous dogs on the planet. its wondering why they felt they could spend that amount of cash to get another dog that LOOKS like the old one. we all know your personality and character are defined by how you are raised... not by your genes necessarily

Thailand bans GTA after video game style murder

Liam

@ Andy Worth

"So, can we get soap operas (Eastenders, Coronation St etc.) banned on the basis that watching them gives people ideas about beating their wife, murdering people, stealing, cheating and so much more?" - ive been saying eastenders (others too mut i find EE the worst) is a reason for societies downfall for ages. in fact how about "o, can we get soap operas (Eastenders, Coronation St etc.) banned."

we see people trying to live the lives of these southern idiots. im sure many more people seem to think soaps are how you are supposed to live... as they 'mimic' society (well society where everyone works on the street they live on, no matter how intelligent they are, you spend all your time in the pub, you cheat on everyone and at xmas someone dies)
