Pebble: The brilliant stealth wearable Apple's Watch doesn't see coming

Anonymoist Cowyard

FUD Time.

Android Wear watches are much slicker – but barely make it through a day. And priced at £199

I paid £132 for my Sony SWR50 (Smartwatch 3) AndroidWear smartwatch. it has Wifi, GPS, and thanks to it's really good translucent display tech, the batter life is 3+ days in real life, moderate use.

So far (after owning it for 2 weeks), I'm really pleased with it. It doesn't look stupid on the wrist like the Moto360 does, has better battery life than the other current Android Wear devices (which is where you got your assumptions from, I guess), and has better waterproofing specs (but more awkward charging, if I had to call it out on anything).

One year on, Windows 8.1 hits milestone, nudges past XP

Anonymoist Cowyard

It's all very sad.

I wasted a Sunday around a relative's house. Their XP machine was running slow (as it was full of malware), so they went to John Lewis on Black Friday and ended up being fobbed off with a HP desktop with Windows 8.1

By the saturday, once they realised none of their stuff was on it, and called me for help, it was already loaded with Malware, as one of them decided to download a FarmVille game.

They had been back to John Lewis as they discovered it didn't have Office on it, where they sold them Office365..

Some people you just can't help. A £170 Chromebook (or Chromebox) would have been just the ticket for what they use a PC for (web/email/basic office), and would have been secure too and would have just worked as soon as they signed in, no need to copy stuff across, or worry about backups.

As it is, they spend 6x that, for something that's already full of malware as I sat there and watched them struggle with Windows 8, I just sighed to myself... Still it's a great money earner for me... So can't complain too much. If everyone owned Chromebooks, how would I earn beer money?

That sub-$100 Android slab you got on Black Friday? RIDDLED with holes, say infosec bods

Anonymoist Cowyard

Yay scareware stories

Anyone would think there was a hidden agenda to stop the market for cheap android devices, or sell a security product..

Back in the real world, this is a total non issue.

Number of android devices I have ever encountered with ANY form of virus or malware 0

Number of windows PC that have seen with issues 90+% of them, hundreds, if not thousands

So in summary

Wait until BT pay to put fibre along a road, and then cry to OFCOM, before undercutting BT on price.

Perhaps these other companies should get off their fat lazy asses and INVEST in infrastructure, not just going for the easy wins.

You must be littered with malware if the press are to be believed. Oh your not??? That doesn't make sense....

With billions of android devices out there, everyone will know someone that's had an Android malware infestation on their device? Oh we don't? That doesn't make sense....

This reporting nonsense has to stop, it's watering down the worth REAL malware threats.

Oh, and there are now BILLIONS of Android devices. Has been for over two years. It's 2million new Android activations every day..

With that rate adoption, and 90% marketshare, you would think everyone would know someone that's had malware problems on their Android phone (if the press were to be believed). Strangely, I don't know a single person that's ever had a problem, and I suspect everyone else is the same...

Go figure.... The press and snakeoil companies continue to embarrass themselves in public with this nonsense.

X Factor season is upon us soon

I hear tim cook has a deal witg Simon Cowell to install all the x factor finalists onto every apple device on the planet, and then enforce a 20 listens rule before they can be removed.

He also has a deal with the record companies to insert tracks from Ricky Martin & Conwey Twittey's xmas duets album randomly into everyones playlists.

Enjoy your Apple marketing devices plebs. Couldn't have happened to a nicer demographic. I didn't think i could laugh any harder at them, but each year the apple car crash gets funnier, with thrir fanboys getting even more delusional and defensive over their premium priced hipster trash.

Anonymoist Cowyard

Re: @AC If I understand the technology correctly

Not going to happen. Despite the BBC's best efforts to downplay the iCloud hack (even going as far as trying to invent counter Android stories), consumers are wary of Apple security. If they can't be trusted to store you nudy pics, how can they be trusted to store your creditcard details.

Scammers round the globe must be running their hands with glee, at the prospect of i-idiots with too much money and no intelligence setting weak passwords and ignoring Apple's (poorly implemented) 2-factor authentication.

Nope, i have a very good experience of google plus. I havnt needed facebook fir two years now. Most of my family and friends (that matter) are on it, and the circles i am in are full of interesting people. Certainly not your usual facebook pleb posts.

Google+ is a true breath of fresh air in social networks, social networking done right. If anyone in the press thinks its dying or a ghost town, they clearly dont know how to use it.

Just with any social network, you need to connect (circles in googleplus) and contribute. Looking at all of the registers staffers public posts, they dont do either.

Look at the iPhone abysmal bluetooth profile support compared to Android, and you have your answer to what NFC on iPhone will support. ApplePay, that is all,

Bloat-free, unlocked Moto X to be dubbed 'Pure Edition', says report

Anonymoist Cowyard

People still buy phones with crapware?

All the Androids I have seen have been pretty light. The Sony's have some of their own apps, but it's done in a decent way, and doesn't really deviate too much from how stock works (the walkman and gallery is substantially better IMHO). Ditto for HTC, LG and Moto.

About the only real offender is Samsung.

Microsoft's rumoured $2.5bn Minecraft gobble expected on Monday

Anonymoist Cowyard

Microssoft obviously missed a track

As the PS4 version of Minecraft was released last week. You would have thought they would have rushed the buy through and then canned it.

I really see no value to this purchase, Minecraft is available for pretty much every platform under the sun, aside the failed Windows Phone OS.

Or will they give it a lick of paint, call it Minecraft 2, make it exclusive to Microsoft platforms?

Not appy with your Chromebook? Well now it can run Android apps

Anonymoist Cowyard
FAIL

Re: Does this mean Chromebooks can run Android malware as well?

Of course not. Anyone with even half a brain know that Android malware only exists outside Google's realm, in the "untrusted zones", and Android-clone, non Google world.

Basic in the western world, where your Android phone came from your phone shop, and yo haven't rooted it or switched off all the layers of protection, then your exposure to malware is no different to any other MobileOS, and FAR more secure than Windows...

So no, because Chrome store is now a curated garden, and people can't just upload Android apps there, things are still very secure.

As I predict the exact opposite. Android Wear is already off and running without a huge set of apps. It's not like when Android had to play catchup, Apple are the ones playing catchup now.
