Shut the front door: Jewson 'fesses up to data breach

AlCro

Was the breach earlier thasn August?

In late June, we were having a new shower fitted in our bathroom. Our plumber referred us to the Graham's Plumber Merchants web site (Also part of the same group as Jewson - owned by the French company Saint Gobain) . Unfortunately, the website was unavailble (as were many of the St Gobain group including that of Jewson, Graham's and British Gypsum) and our plumber later said that the Graham's web site was undergoing a cyber attack and even he could not access his online account.

With all these web sites suffering outages at the same time, it makes you wonder what caused this, and whether it is related to this more recent admission of a breach and possible loss of customer's data?

RBS and Natwest online banking goes titsup

No problems for me

I have just successfully logged on to my online RBS bank account via my PC within 19 minutes of this article appearing on The Register --- so no problems for me via this route.

So much for the inverse square law. My screen is no brighter from this distance!

Feng shui

Miranda reckoned applying feng shui in the office was badly affecting her productivity , especially when it left her with no hands to operate the keyboard.

Jane was not really sure if this was what Microsoft meant when it said "Position the top of the screen near eye level."

No matter which way she looked at it, it was still Windows 10.

New Flash flaw lets you beat White House and NATO security

AlCro

If you are against flash, why do you use it so much?

Why is it that The Register is (understandably) so against using Flash, and denounces it for its security flaws, but at the same time continues to publish articles containing videos that require Flash for them to be viewed?

I have my browser set to prompt me to enable the Flash plugin, and it seems that most articles on The Register web site that contain a video require Flash to be enabled in order to be viewed.

So, it's really buggy and exposes you to security risks, but we will still continue to use it, and at the same time expose our readers to security risks.

Dad: If a tree falls in the forest, and there’s nobody around to hear, does it make a sound?

Son: Don't need virtual reality to answer that one, Dad, even the trees have ears.

Dr. Zira, I must caution you. Experimental brain surgery on these creatures is one thing, and I'm all in favour of it. But your behaviour studies are another matter. To suggest that we can learn anything about the simian nature from a study of man is sheer nonsense. Why, man is a nuisance. He eats up his food supply in the forest, then migrates to our green belts and ravages our crops. The sooner he is exterminated, the better. It's a question of simian survival.

EBay, you keep using the word 'SECURITY'. I do not think it means what you think it means

Poor notification

I have not received any notification - no messages in my Ebay Inbox, no notices displayed after first logging in.

Having read about the problem on another web site (Hexus.net), I went in to change my password.

It wasn't until I started the process (i.e. selected edit password), that the page displayed a message advising me to change my password and asking me to enter my email address, so that I could continue with the process.

Well that is truly a cart-before-the-horse way of informing users! Wait until they are doing the activity they need to do before informing them of the need to carry on.
