Windows Server 2016: Leg up or lock in?

SineWave242

When I think "server" nothing even remotely Microsoft springs to mind. I wouldn't run a server at a garbage disposal with a Microsoft "server". Buggy peace of **** that needs to be watched all the time. It's a server for masochist admins, or rather "admins" who just like to pretend to be admins but have no clue at all and MSCE in their pocket which can only serve as a nice emergency bog-paper.

All this could be avoided easily if people used some of the Linux distros instead of Windows. Linux updates so easily. It's really a "plug and play" OS. Depending on the distro and desktop environment, of course. I have good experiences with Debian Mate.

Re: The Last of Us

I'm sick of people who keep implying like parrots that in order to be able to use Linux you need to have some kind of "special skill". Are you still living in 2006? I find it *far* more complicated to install Windows with all the drivers and apps these days than any Linux distribution, and especially if installing it on a laptop. Get informed, mate. Stop talking from your behind.

Microsoft has crafted a switch OS on Debian Linux. Repeat, a switch OS on Debian Linux

SineWave242

Re: 100 times more?

If your browser in Linux takes up 4+GB of RAM, you're doing something wrong, or just purposefully making it use so much RAM.

I'm Starting System Monitor on Debian 8.3... it says Iceweasel is using 348MB of RAM. That's with 9 open tabs. I don't use crappy Flash, but I have 4 tabs with [stopped] videos in it.

SineWave242

Re: Beware the E E E effect

You surely meant Microsoft, not Linux? Because that terrible, monopolistic, money-grabbing company has been sticking with us for at least 5 years too long. It should go away because an OS that everybody uses shouldn't be owned by one US company. It's as simple as that. And since Microsoft is a company, it can go bust. Open Source canno9t, and it will always exist, one way or another, and that's what all people should use.

Re: Don't forget second hand options.

This is pretty much the same story as with my T410 lappy. :) Paid AUD 300 for it on eBay. 4GB RAM, Samsung 128MB SSD, Nvidia Quadro GPU, Firewire port [extremely useful to me as I'm into audio and use firewire audio interfaces], ExpressCard port, and you can put an additional HD in the UltraBay instead of a DVD. Bloody perfect! I've put Debian Jessie and Windows 7 on it both. W7 only for audio work and Debian for everything else. Works like a charm. I don't think this thing can break, like ever, lol and it performs admirably. Except for the battery, but I use it as an additional computer to my DAW PC anyway, not for portable work that much.

Ugly Microsoft code NUKED Bing and Yahoo! – report

SineWave242

Dodgy Microsoft Code

What else is new?

And they're using Windows based servers? Good luck! I wouldn't run a Windows server for public toilets network, let alone a search engine like Yahoo or Bing. Speaking of search engines ask Google what OS they're running for servers... and have they experienced any downtimes? Running Linux servers gives you usually about 99.9% of uptime annually, if not more.

Re: Not as simple as that indeed....

Could what you said simply be put into words as "you should learn how to adapt?" ;) And we surely should learn how to do that.

SineWave242

Re: Not as simple as that indeed....

Thanks to a minority, but incredibly influential, characters like you, there's hardly anything people do to counteract the global warming. However, we in Europe don't talk so much about it, but do something about it, even on our own if we have to. To me it just seems so much better to have a home that's self reliant on energy and a car that doesn't stink and make noise. Simple - I love clean air and silence! I'm not bothered by what will it cost to acquire that, especially when the benefits so easily outweighs the downsides that are simply repulsive, and simply our daily downsides we encounter as soon as you hit the street. Regarding carbon tax - yes, everybody is to blame, but mostly factories, cars, and cattle raised for meat. That's like majority of all the CO2 emissions.

Weekend reads: Russell Brand's Revolution and Joy Division's Ian Curtis gets lyrical

SineWave242

Russell Brand is just a bit ahead of the social turmoil. It happens a lot. Marx was criticised a lot in his time. I'm not speaking as a RB fan, as I'm not, but I find him a really good speaker to implant the new ideas in people's minds of a society of equality and tolerance as opposed to this competitive and war waging based society we now have. Why would anyone be against stopping wars and poverty? Are you mad? Words can speak far more than any gun or violence. That's how this utterly lost society has been built, after all, and we just have a thing for great words, although they are usually deceitful. I'm alright with Russell Brand for as long as his words jive with mine.

SKYPE has the HOTS for my NAKED WIFE

SineWave242

On the other hand, speaking of video communication, why just not give an e-mail a chance? You can take your time to write it nicely. Writing text is great. Video communication is completely different and more "down to earth". I sometimes prefer one or the other, depending on the occasion.

SineWave242

Re: Yes, I went there and said "avatars."

That's a nice idea for a Youtube show. Something like "Spitting Image". ;) But the conversation should be rather witty... not the usual US racist or sexist crap... they just don't get the real humorous side of things.

SineWave242

Re: I just use Linux...

You're just incompetent. Admit it. I've yet to encounter a camera that doesn't work in Linux. I've got better experience with cameras on Linux than on Windows. Never blame anything or anyone else if you've been just too lazy to give a search on the web to it and see how you can make it work. If I hate something it is laziness to learn yourself and spare other competent people the trouble of writing 60+ lines of posts just to explain something simple to a lazy computer user who expects everything to just work as expected. This doesn't happen on any of the OSes I know, or it happens rarely.

SineWave242

Re: MS are making Skype unusuable

What I can't understand is why people use Skype when there are so many other alternatives. Especially if you just need to talk to your spouse or relatives. It's easy to install something else. The easiest being Google hangout. All you need is a Google account. However, I tend to use even more obscure and rare services for video calls. There is a choice, people. You just have to search around a bit. I'll never understand why people just jump the ship so easily onto what others are using. Just think with your own brain - that's what you have it for.

SineWave242

Re: Ah.

Or how about Windows Yawn... :)

But seriously speaking I think it will be called just Windows as they are abandoning the new Windows every two years plan in favour of more Linux like update schedule/way of updating things. Which is good. That means more patches for the core of the OS and less useless GUI updates. They want to make a new XP, kinda, that will last for years to come. That is my educated guess, anyway.

Re: Anyone know of a link with details on the process?

It's not that easy to just stack wafers one upon the other. There are thermal issues. I've been wondering the same about RAM and CPUs, too. It's hard to cool it. I'm actually wondering about the stacked NAND, too, and how they're handling the higher thermal dissipation?

SineWave242

Re: Fool me once....

I'm not sure if I should down-vote or up-vote your post because I absolutely agree with your "Don't like it? Don't use it!".

However, so many people are just simply bullied into using Word for writing articles, books and whatever, because people are not informed well. All they hear about is "Microsoft Office" and "Word" and all I can tell them is: use something else. "Word" is so far from being one and only for everything. Ask around for alternatives - there are hundreds! Microsoft is a company who makes subpar one-track-minded corporate software and have succeeded *somehow* [even using malicious practises] to push their software upon so many users. That doesn't mean AT ALL that their software is the best. Just use whatever suits you bes,t and if someone tells you that you should send them a "doc" or "docx" just use Libreoffice to convert the document into whatever format they ask of you for free. On Linux with LibreOffice you can even easily "print it" to PDF. It's THAT EASY because you don't have to install anything else like in Windows.
