The web is DOOM'd: Average page now as big as id's DOS classic

Bad Beaver

Bloat is everywhere, go big or go bust

Look around, everything is bloated. Set up a new file in, say Word, like a good office drone. Let it have your company's little stationary logo of about 10kB. Now add a couple of paragraphs, just a single page. Save to docx.

How large is this document? Expectation: a whopping 80-120kB, because of all the docx overhead and the little picture and stuff.

Actually, it is more likely to be around 500kB. For a single page of text.

I guess this is according to the infinite growth paradigm or something. Everything must grow and expand, use up more resources, bigger and bigger, to keep the system alive.

By any account, in 10 years your little "S'up mate?" Whatsapp message will require several megabytes of data.

Netflix's $1.81 billion Q1 disappoints markets

Bad Beaver

Netflix is a sad excuse

for a video-shack. They could be such a cool place, a candyland for movie-buffs. Instead they don't even have a proper classics-section, plus if you happen not live in the US, you are expected to be happy with of last years' (if you're lucky) seasons of a very limited selection popular shows. For example, they sold out House of Cards, THE NETFLIX SHOW!, to some other service in Germany (sky?), so you do not get to see the latest episodes first on Netflix itself. It's pathetic.

Mañana: Nokia’s in no hurry to go back to phones

Bad Beaver

Re: Just buy Jolla

I think some folks at Jolla might rather implode than have that happen but Nokia should defenitely evaluate that route. Even if they do not buy the company they should license the OS and thereby keep them good people afloat. Put that stuff on a decent range of devices made in oldendays Nokia quality and we're talking.

There is zero use in a Nokia branded phone that is simply another faceless rebadged droid. It needs to be a _real_ Nokia.

Safari iOS crashing: Suggestions snafu KOs the Apple masses

Bad Beaver

Re: @Bad Beaver, Another mark on the list

Interesting point, thank you for that. Of course, we cannot really be sure about the true cause. Maybe the OS performance is fine (safe for personal niggles) and Apple just happens to sell €1.300 "basic" desktops that cannot run it without jitters, despite 16GB of RAM and a fusion-drive. You never know. They also sell you a €35 Thunderbolt / Firewire 800 adaptor that seems to max out at 34MB/s.

Bad Beaver

Another mark on the list

I have this theory going that post-PowerPC-Apple peaked at 10.6.8 and has been going down ever since. The impertinence that is 10.11.x can hardly be put into words that one would be willing to utter in public. It feels like a public beta with all the bugs, performance issues and plain bad design decisions all over the place. It's terrifying. Crap like this Safari bug just adds to the steaming pile.

Terror in the Chernobyl dead zone: Life - of a wild kind - burgeons

Bad Beaver

What a meltdown.

Wow, just wow. So you remove the humans from an area – and then animals proceed to thrive in the freed up space? Who would have thought!

On the other hand, during the five minutes of this very recent NYT video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TG-nwQBBfmc

about the wildlife in the hot zones of Chernobyl we learn that there is for example …

• Less biodiversity than expected

• More tumors

• More deformations

• Decline in populations of insects and spiders

• Some birds adapting to increased radiation levels

• Very "hot" mushrooms

• Dramatic color changes in the rings of cut trees starting in 1986

• Abnormal color patterns on bugs

Well, sounds dandy in my book. Therefore, I would suggest for Lewis to permanently relocate to the hot zone in order to prove his point. There are very little human-related distractions there too, so he would find much more time to produce even more flawless pieces of balanced reporting regarding his favorite topics. I would personally volunteer to finance a nice big stick for him to shake at the abundance of wolves that now roam the blooming landscapes of Chernobyl. Further, if Lewis manages to convince a fertile female companion to make the move with him, I will even pay for a second stick in a color of her choice. Be warned though, this pesky radiation thing has a tendency to muck with your offspring so you might want to have an eye on that.

Testing CarPlay with Apple’s most expensive ever accessory

Re: Beat me to it

Why a lousy driver in a Ferrari is worse than the same lousy driver in a Yugo, especially in an urban setting?

Torque.

Bad Beaver

Beat me to it

I happen to live in an area with a pretty high number of expensive cars around and the mere thought that folks are hurtling (in this case) nearly two tons of matter down the road aided by about 500 horses while dabbling with Apple Maps is … discomforting.

The driving skills exhibited by a great number of these motorists are bad enough as is, there is very little need to add more trouble in the form of buggy maps and apps, locked up or crashed phones and other items of distraction.

Exempt from this observation are, of course, all the gentlefolks with actual driving skills and an immunity to the idea that spending six figures or more on your ride somehow turns you into Batman.

Personally, whenever I find myself at the wheel, especially if it happens to be a high-powered car, I tend to ignore my phone during the ride. "Important" calls will be dealt with before I start, delayed to when I get there or handled by other passengers.

Call me old-fashioned but I would much rather live to see another day than be updated about some trivial detail Dick from the office added to the presentation or about how little Timmy was such a darling today while missing out on that lorry switching lanes. I am sometimes forced to share a ride with people who do not follow this philosophy and I find it rather disturbing that they deem their ability to yack away to be more important than the wellbeing of themselves, their passengers, fellow motorists and possibly pedestrians. It is not that you are making any great decisions during these calls anyhow – because your brain is busy driving a vehicle in traffic. If I want to make important decisions while on the road, I leave the driving to someone else.

Then again, I may not be rich and/or important enough to see the allure of it all.

Apple's iPad Pro: We're making a Surface Pro WITH A STYLUS over Steve Jobs' DEAD BODY

Re: So sad. SO sad.

Indeed it does and they could have put it into the whole lineup straight away. But no, that cow is to be milked another day. And then yet another day will come when they will magically rediscover the art of handwriting. "Wouldn't it be amazing if your iPad could read your handwriting and respond to pen gestures?" – yes, it would. Like a Newton from 20 years ago. Awesome!

Bad Beaver

So sad. SO sad.

So ... so they finally figure out how one could use their fondleslabs for actual work (*ugh*) via the miracle of THE PEN ... and then that $99 bugger only works with ONE model, the huge one? And it is good for ... doodeling, not a word about HWR? So they basically reinvented the Newton – but 50% dumber and much less mobile?

For Pete's sake, find the guy with the cluestick and beg him for your pummeling!

Sell me an iPad mini with pen support, including HRW or – heavens – an iPhone plus of the same nature. Is it really that hard? It's called a Newton. Look it up, you sold it 20 years ago. You own the patents. Samsung can do it, they just cannot get it right. But at least they're trying.

Jolla chief quits: Fawning Putin lickspittles to take over?

Bad Beaver

AFAIK there is only a limited batch of tablets, so if you did not participarte in the crowdfunding you should not wait too long. I have my doubts about a Jolla 2 phone. They sure should make one as a showboat for the OS but they did announce they were getting out of hardware.

Bad Beaver

Bad timing

I agree, without some sort of celebratory act in the line of "Jolla enters a new stage and so do I" this seems like bad timing – with the tablet and Sailfish 2.0 finally ready to go. Dillon is a very likeable guy and Jolla should see to replace him with someone of similar charisma to keep the brand moving forward.

Anyway, whatever happens next: I gladly forked out for that tablet and am very much looking forward to getting my hands on it. I am also keen to see the OS on other makers' hardware.

From my perspective, Jolla and Sailfish are among the most interesting and significant things to happen in mobile since Jobs' death and Nokia leaving the building. They are a force of positive disruption desperately needed in a market saturated to death with samey uninspiredness.

Apparently not. I am flabbergasted by how tight the clutch of fear culture on peoples' minds seem to be these days. Scared to death by the unspeakable menace of a tiny RC-toy (stop calling these things drones for crivens sake).

Because hey, it's not simply a minor nuisance not worthy of further attention but most likely a terrorist delivering a tiny load of ultra-efficient explosive or maybe even enough VX wo wipe out the entire tennis court.

German railways upgrade their comms tech from 2G to 4G

Bad Beaver
Go

Oh, so the comms is the problem?

That's surprising, as trains get delayed around here rather often because the aircon in their multi-million-€-trains was not designed to handle the insane heat of the notoriously hot German summer or because the whole railway-system is unable to cope with the sudden and unexpected arrival of that weird phenomenon they call "winter". Really looking forward to that being solved by 4G -> Die Bahn kommt.

Nokia will indeed be back 'making' phones – and it's far from a foolish move

Bad Beaver

It's the devil's work

Is there any good will for them left to burn? I don't know. People will keep buying phones though. Yet I cannot say that I would be much interested in a Nokia branded device running NSAndroid. I would be interested in a Nokia branded device running Sailfish and as we hear, Jolla is going the licensing way and ditching their hardware efforts – but as Jolla only exists because folks were being axed by Nokia, that idea is high up on the unlikelyhood-shelve.

Regardless: Do try! Come back and sell N- and E-Series style devices. Hire Fallon or a bunch of other mad folks to come up with an earthshaking campaign. Free us from the boredom that is Apple and Samsung.

Brace yourself, planet Earth, says Nokia CEO – our phones ARE coming back from mid-2016

Bad Beaver

Torn

The article says they would design the phone and license the brandname.

I don't know. Could be interesting if they came up with useful designs, not generic landfill phones. I guess it would be some Android crap but maybe one could put Sailfish on it. Sailfish on a Nokia design is something I would pay good money for. Especially if it had some buttons or  – heavens – a real QWERTY. Because, honestly: Sailfish is the cool part about Jolla devices. Their phone all by itself is a bit lackluster.

As is, my E6-00 is doing a stellar job and the battery lasts for days at a time. Improve on that and we have a deal.

WTF?

Whipped out the Newton the other day

I dusted off one of my MP2100s the other day, popped in some fresh AAs and FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER had to acutally do some maintenance – namely install a patch for the 2010 bug (Thank you Eckhart Köppen!). A process which I completed by downloading the pkg file to my phone and consequently pushing it to the Newton via Bluetooth (yes, indeed) as I had all but forgotten how to properly set up the WLAN. Not that it would not work without the patch but a working calendar is a good thing.

Onwards to the real point: I instantly remembered why I loved working with this device back in the day, with some very importand aspects being

• the interface: it is 100% pen-based

• you can write on the resistive touchscreen without worries about where to put your hand

So unless Apple changes the whole iPad interface the whole thing just smells of fail. A pen can never be an afterthought. Which is why you see so few people using one with their iPads for the task of actual writing. If it wasn't for the horror of Android, I would have picked up a Samsung Note of some sort by now.

But go ahead, Apple – surprise me. It's been a while!

Anyhow, this could do better. Why are the door designs not mirrored? Does it have a faint purple glow oozing out from inside? Do the doors make a cool decompression noise when opened? Can you program it to rumble, hiss and growl when certain people are nearby?

Alfa Romeo Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde: Fun, but not for all

Models, models, models …

I learned to drive on a 90s Spider 2.0. That car was full of surprises. There was a little open canal behind the seats, I think a little less than an inch deep, that cought the water leaking in on rainy days. You would never know what would stop working next. It was a wonderful little car and I loved it dearly.

Yet whenever I see the Gulietta I cannot help myself but think "boy, that thing is ugly". It is high time for them to reintroduce some decent designs and widen the range. The 4C is pretty nice but if I wanted an impractical racer I would much rather pick a Lotus. 156, 166, Spider and GTV are dearly missed.

And please stop making them look like fat, frightened little rodents, it is unbecoming.

Re: No thanks, I'm fine with SACD

It's a humble Denon DVD-2900 ;) Was a steal when new and is even more of a steal today as you can pick it up for less then 200. Not the last word in terms of über-expensive audiophile technolust but excellent value for money and hard to beat in any of those dreaded "real world" environments.

Bad Beaver

Re: The good thing about CDs

Exactly.

Bad Beaver
FAIL

No thanks, I'm fine with SACD

Being among those who were actually willing to shell out "400 quid" (where did that number come from? It'll serve for illustration, yet I think we are really missing a digit here…) for a dedicated SACD player I feel compelled to comment. Oh wait, that dedicated SACD player is also a reference grade CD player, reference grade DVD player and also happens to happens to play the two DVD-Audio discs (QUEEN!) I managed to acquire before the format tanked. Let's just say it was quite the good investment.

But I digress. 99% of my considerable number of SACDs are hybrids with a DRM-free CDDA layer. They all feature DRM-protected high resolution stereo and the majority also comes with 5.1 content.

The point: The format is very versatile, can be played everywhere or serve to make rips at the desired quality. There is also much more content that I could ever consume in any sense, with only crappy current pop being underrepresented. Everything that is actually worth listening to in high resolution audio is there in ample supply.

So what exactly has HFPA on offer? It can only properly play on BR players, mind at a "mix" not "remaster" quality level, there is no CDDA layer in sight and instead, one will be forced to jump through whatever hoops the companies come up with in order to get one's hands on a ripped file of the content that may or may not come in the format or quality desired and may or may not be riddled with further DRM. Even thinking about it leaves me feeling exhausted.

In short: I feel not at all compelled.
