Yahoo! Groups' closure and a tale of Oftel: Die-hard users 'informally' included telcos

It's sad to see internet history being wiped out.

Twist my Arm why don't you: Brit CPU behemoth latest biz to cease work with Huawei – report

Re: US components

Softbank only bought ARM so they could sell off the crown jewels to China at a massive mark up.

China will produce it's own version of ARM very quickly and will now pretend it's their own IP.

They did it with high speed trains, if anyone is looking for an example

Re: Domains for email

Start moving all your accounts to a free e-mail server.

Every time you visit a website, change the e-mail.

Set up a mail rule, that any e-mail that is addressed to your old e-mail gets highlighted with a flag.

When you receive an e-mail to the old address visit the webiste and change it.

After a few years the non-spam e-mail will dry up and you can be confident you haven't used that e-mail anywhere

Then you can sell the domain name if you want to, or if it gets too expensive just fail to renew it.

Best start preparing now. ICANN is becoming the new FIFA

Until now, if Canadian Uber drivers wanted to battle the tech giant, they had to do it in the Netherlands – for real

Re: Why Uber?

Uber drivers are still licensed tax drivers. They still have to pass the same tests.

I recently booked a taxi in my city using the taxi firms app. The payment was handled by the taxi firm.

You can agree a fee in advance, but virtually no-one does. They all operate on a meter.

I still really don't see any difference between Uber and other local firms

Re: Infrastructure

It wouldn't, it would be extremely wasteful.

To generate hydrogen efficiently you need very high temperatures, and the best place to get them is in a nuclear power station.

The Hinckley point reactor is going to be expensive because it's a one off station.

If you had a fleet of new reactors, all to the same design, costs would be lower.

Add the fact that they are generating car-fuel overnight when electricity demand is low, and they would turn a profit. The government would build them and then sell them off.

Re: Infrastructure

Indeed. Build 10 new nuclear power stations that are designed to generate Hydrogen fuel on the side.

Convert all busses in London to Hydrogen fuel. Convert all taxis. Then ban all petrol and diesel vehicles from central London. Then roll it out to all other cities in the UK. Once the infrastructure is in place for hydrogen vehicles, completely ban new petrol and diesel vehicles. If you have vehicles that can be filled up with hydrogen, the way you stop for petrol, there becomes no excuse to use Internal combustion engines any more.

Creating a market for Hydrogen fuel will allow the Nuclear power stations to run without subsidies. And will get rid of all traffic pollution in city centres.

It's all proven technology, just needs the scale and infrastructure to make it commercially viable.

Re: "He was found not guilty, therefore he is innocent"

"This is all right and proper, and the public would expect it, why on earth shouldn't they? Otherwise you get situations like the one where the Germanwings pilot downed a plane."

You are missing the point.

If all doctors have to 'tell tales' on any pilot who is suicidal, what do you think is going to happen? It won't stop pilots potentially comitting suicide. It will stop them talking to doctors.

The same applies here. This man told the doctor/nurse some things, presummably because he wanted help. Now his life is ruined. What will the effect be on anyone else having similar thoughts? Will they ever talk to someone? No. Does that make the world a safer place?

Govt: Citizens, we know you want 10Mbps. This is the last broadband scheme for that

It's a lot cheaper to supply citizens in the city with water than it is those in small towns and villages. I wouldn't be surprised if the city water customers were subsidising the country ones (apart from those who are off grid, who again chose to live there) Lots of customers being close together makes almost anything cheaper.

Google underwrites Firefox another year, even as Chrome outpaces it

Re: Bizarre

Google don't care what browser you use. They pay Firefox because if they didn't Bing would probably be the default search option in Firefox. The revenue that Google pay to Firefox is only a small percentage of the profits Google make from Firefox. If they didn't, someone else would make the profits. It's a no-brainer.
