ICO to focus only on 'serious, repeat' data-protection offenders

WTF?

Consultation, for what it's worth...

"The ICO said that it intends to implement the changes to complaint handling on 1 April 2014"

No irony there, then.

Anyway, on to the point in hand; the consultation document can be found here: http://www.ico.org.uk/about_us/consultations/our_consultations

And displays all the hallmarks of a lack of proof-reading...

3. Are you able to quantify this likely increase or decrease in the burden of our activity on your business ?

Self-destructing selfies? Not so fast! Snapchat now offers one-time Replay

A "holiday present" for who?

So it's a feature which can only be used once a day, you say? How long until a paid-for option appears for extra "replays"? Yeah, Spiegel's just a fun, cool hipster dude, not looking to do a Zuckerberg at all, nosiree...

Gadget world's metals irreplaceable, say boffins

Interrobang

Because we said so?

"... the tech sector needs to get much, much better at recycling the metals it uses ..."

Why? Because scientists said so? The world runs on money; it will only happen if there is a financial imperative for these companies to do so.

Worst case I can see would be that accessible ores of one more metals dwindle, resulting in higher mining and production costs being passed on to manufacturers. At that point, the damage is already done and the known reserves are nearly exhausted (but that never happens, I mean we've still got plenty of forests and fish stocks left, right?)

If there really is a shortage problem to be addressed, it'll take governmental involvement at an international level to financially penalise misusue of (or incentivise frugal use of) the "endagered" metal. The worldwide distribution of these resources then becomes politically concerning:

PlayStation 4 BLUE LIGHT OF DEATH blamed on power cords, TV sets, butterflies in China

History repeating?

Seems to me this is the way of things to come. The market drives games console manufacturers to produce hardware as cheaply and quickly as possible in order to meet demand, and as the hardware itself becomes more powerful and complex, it's inevitable that the failure rate will increase.

Microsoft and Sony seem equally plagued by this when releasing any new system, with Nintendo only slightly less affected (apparently less media attention, but from personal experience I've had to self-repair a seldom-used 1st generation Wii twice now for the same fault; failed optical drive). Unless we're willing accept lower volumes of hardware available at launch, and/or higher prices, I don't see the trend changing anytime soon.

I do think it's worth keeping this in perspective, insofar as the relatively small 0.4% of affected units Sony is claiming. Although I'm sure if I were one of the unlucky 4000, I'd take to the internet to voice my frustration. I wonder how many similar complaints went unreported during the www-free 8-bit gaming era, and earlier?

Windows 8.1: Read this BEFORE updating - especially you, IT admins

FAIL

What a farce (though should we really be surprised?)

I'm one of the lucky ones, downloaded successfully via the Store within an hour of launch. Booting straight to desktop this morning made me smugly happy!

No such luck for my colleagues trying to update today. For many, the Windows Store doesn't even show the 8.1 tile at all. So we tried downloading the ISO from MSDN instead. 12 KB/Sec for a 3.45 GB file? Sure, I've got three days to spare, who hasn't? But of course the download failed around an hour later. And couldn't be resumed. Using the supposedly-resilient Download Manager...

Other points of amusement were the incompatibility of Microsoft's Download Manager with their own browser. That's right, the ActiveX control doesn't run under IE10 or higher (without forcing compatibility mode). Catch-22, anyone? In reality, the Java-based version of the DLM running in Firefox is more accessible. Also worth mentioning that only the N version of Win8 Pro would even start downloading at all, presumably the vanilla ISO with Media Player included is the more popular choice...

IMO it's a sad state of affairs when the only reliable and fast way to get hold of a copy of the 8.1 upgrade is to torrent the ISO. If you're going to force your customers to use a single online upgrade channel, do it right. I could name a certain fruit-based device peddler who already achieved just that...
