Hey, remember that monkey selfie copyright drama a few years ago? Get this – It's just hit the US appeals courts

Bloodbeastterror

"the case was wasting judicial resources"

Exactly.

I respected PETA for their work in animal welfare (despite the comments already posted suggesting otherwise), but this is really too much stupidity. Is this how they spend money donated for the purpose of looking after animals?

Re: @Chris

I'll hang this slightly-off-topic comment here in case anyone's interested (though Reg readers may already know...)

I noticed that when I upgraded to Creator a few months ago Microsoft surreptitiously switched their "call home" service back on, even though I'd deliberately disabled it.

Windows-R, run services.msc, "Connected User Experiences and Telemetry", double-click for properties, stop and disable.

Are there other call-home functions apart from this?

"Don't you have an Edit button alongside the reply?"

No, I don't, Other sites, yes. But El Reg, no. Nothing except "remove". They clearly have me marked as a troublemaker... :-)

Bloodbeastterror

Re: Social disease

Exactly. The problem with that is that de yoot don't actually have the experience to understand what went before. Standing on the shoulders of giants? Nah - that's the old world, innit...

Bloodbeastterror

Re: "This new app is absolutely terrible"

Since I'm on the subject, what exactly is the Register "make this comment better within ten minutes" offer? All I get is the option to remove it - that's not making it better, is it? Come on, someone, tell me what I'm missing.

It appears to me that the development community is driven by youngsters/children who have little appreciation of what went before - social cohesion, chit-chat, interaction. What they see is the knee-jerk 140-character response, not the considered thoughtful review of what they're commenting on. Sad.

Bloodbeastterror

"This new app is absolutely terrible"

Yes. Uninstalled from all my devices. What is *wrong* with these people that they insist on destroying a perfectly reasonable product?

Northern Ireland bags £150m for broadband pipes in £1bn Tory bribe

Bloodbeastterror

Not again...

In 2010 I broke a lifetime's voting pattern in despair of no longer having a Labour party to vote for after that failed human being Blair gutted it. I voted for the Lib Dems. That two-faced weasel Clegg sold my vote to the Tories, who were apparently all too pleased to bend over to get it.

And now here I am, a Northern Irishman, seeing those same Tories blatantly buying votes to prop up their incompetent and failed government - from the most unpleasant bunch of people you could ever wish to avoid. Shame. Don't give me any nonsense about Labour's inability to run the country; these self-serving imbeciles have dragged us out of Europe, incurring god knows what sort of financial as well as social consequences, and now appear to me to be (legally?) bribing their way into another failure of a "government". Actually, "incompetent" is too good a word for this gang of shambling morons.

And how long will it be until the next general election? I'm guessing months rather than years.

What a disgraceful mess... I despair... And I'm angry...

Re: Trump's done lots of deals in the construction business...

"Trump being a narcissistic sociopath"

To add to my post, I refreshed my memory on this:

https://www.healthyplace.com/personality-disorders/sociopath/beware-the-narcissistic-sociopath/

Traits of a Narcissistic Sociopath

How do you spot a sociopathic narcissist? Watch for certain traits:

A driven quest for power. If a narcissistic sociopath cares about anything other than himself, it is destructive power and control over people.

Behaviors that seek love and admiration. To be sure, this isn't needy love. It's not even emotional love. It's superficial. A narcissistic sociopath sees love and admiration as power tools to manipulate and dominate (Do Sociopaths Even Have Feelings?).

No apologies, no guilt, no remorse under any circumstance. A sociopathic narcissist believes that she is a gift to the world who makes it richer and more colorful. Therefore, her calculated, even cruel actions are always justified.

Invincibility. The narcissistic variety of sociopath believes he is indomitable. Even punishment and prison can't stop him. They're merely part of the game.

Wholly self-serving. The needs and wants of others are insignificant and undeserving of consideration.

Act as the producer, director, and only actor of his own show. The narcissistic sociopath casts people in roles that increase his power and sense of importance and when bored, casts them aside.

Ring any bells...?

Bloodbeastterror

Re: Trump's done lots of deals in the construction business...

"He's more a "person" guy than a "technology" guy."

No, he's not. The only thing you need to know about Trump's character is here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iimj0j4NYME

The jutting jaw and "don't f*** with me" expression make my skin crawl.

I'm no psychologist or psychiatrist, but everything I've read and seen on the subject points, in my view, to Trump being a narcissistic sociopath, a man who has no empathy with others and sees them purely as object to be used for his personal gain.

And I mean "gain", not "pleasure". It appears to me that Trump's only solitary pleasure is in winning. Now that he's actually won the most powerful job in the world he's lost, a scared little boy who lashes out at any criticism.

How in the world did this snake-oil salesman get to here...?

Bloodbeastterror

Re: Hmmm ...

"That might be why it took so long to come up with the carefully worded non-denial"

It's also possible, I suppose, that Trump has handed over his Twitter account to various other people to issue sensible (well, grammatical at least...) comments from time to time. After all, he abrogated authority to his Middle East commanders, and couldn't even be bothered to be involved in the decision to launch cruise missiles, a fact that still astonishes me even after all these six long months.

In a way I'm quite enjoying this slow-motion car crash. If only it weren't putting the futures of all our descendants at severe risk.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Americans, be ashamed. Be very ashamed.

@Destroy All Monsters

"[Comey] started recording contents of his private conversations with the president-elect on a secure FBI laptop in his car outside Trump Tower. He didn’t even wait until he got back to the office"

That's called "taking contemporaneous(*) notes", and is well-recognised and respected in legal circles, since it's regarded as the best recollection of an event short of actually audio- or video-recording it.

(*) "Contemporaneous" means "at the same time". Yes, I am trying to patronise(**) you.

(**) "Patronise" means talking down to someone.

Teen girl who texted boyfriend to kill himself guilty of manslaughter

Bloodbeastterror

Re: Stupid but?

"two sick people interacting"

Yes, certainly, but the sickness was of diametrically opposite kinds. The boy was a poor sod who needed support. I've often been extremely sad, never to the point of suicide, but I can imagine that negative feedback would certainly have deepened the hole I was in.

The girl, on the other hand, is a vile vicious piece of trash. No sympathy, no empathy, just apparent glee in the power she had over the poor sod, and revelling in the attention she expected as the bereaved girlfriend. A disgusting repulsive failure of a human being.

Like an earlier poster, I hope she gets the full twenty years.

Firefox 54 delivers sandboxes Mozilla's wanted since 2009

Bloodbeastterror

I'm not convinced, though my figures are of course not scientific.

Firefox 53 with CNN & BBC live streams running in two tabs - 1.4GB RAM, 30% CPU.

Firefox 54 with the same tabs - 750MB RAM, 24% CPU.

Better maybe, but still a huge amount of resources for a browser, no?

So I copied the same tabs to Edge and opened them, and get - 400MB RAM, 7% CPU.

I don't want to switch browsers, but this is eye-opening for me.

The internet may well be the root cause of today's problems… but not in the way you think

Bloodbeastterror

Re: The internet is to blame.

"Church of England is probably the best"

I'm guessing that by "the best" you mean the least harmful. If so, then I refer you to Jainism, an order devoted to the sacredness of life, whose monks reputedly brush the ground before them as they walk for fear of treading on an ant.

To paraphrase Sam Harris, it's not extremism in religion that we should fear, it's the fundamentalist perversion of religion. In the case of the Jain monks, the more fanatically extremist they are the better.

Bloodbeastterror

Re: Optional religious wars were ended?

"Removing religion isn't going to help"

Apart from the fact that I don't understand your first sentence, I disagree with you. Societal ills (poverty, injustice) may be the cause of a great deal of social unrest and crime, but if you want mass murder of unknown innocent people you will find that in almost all cases the cause is religion. Yes, there are psychopaths out there (Brady, for example) who have mental problems way beyond what any of us can imagine, but if you look at these worldwide bombers, child kidnappers and knifemen, all of them, all of them are motivated by their phantom god and his promise of virgins. What a pity that these criminal imbeciles will never know the fallacy of their stupidity.

So you're wrong. The sooner parents stop whispering the filth of religion into their children's ears the better. It's child abuse. As the late great Christopher Hitchens said, religion is a force which makes good people do evil things. Look no farther than Manchester and London for the proof.

Re: Pen and Paper note, "Welcome to Britains' Open Prison"

"For every £1 you spend on surveillance"

Warning: rant mode on.

This is absolutely true, but rather than diminish funding for surveillance of possible terrorism we could easily completely lose funding for Trident and build a great number of hospitals instead - or whatever other worthwhile project takes your fancy. The fact that we're spending uncountable billions on ICBMs when the threat is from criminals with knives in vans clearly demonstrates the pointlessness of this gross white elephant. It's like buying a 70" HDR TV and then announcing that you don't watch TV - but it's handy for your reputation with the envious neighbours. After all, the kids got new shoes the year before last...

But back to the topic. Apart from the vile crassness, already noted, of using the deaths of people to make a cheap political point in an attempt to be Thatcher Mk. II (spit) in the run-up to an election, May and cronies appear to not get that weakening encryption would risk the security of all of us for no benefit. Does she genuinely think that terrorists trust Whatsapp to exchange terrorist messages? No, I suspect she doesn't, since she must have advisors who actually understand this stuff, but she's counting on Middle England's fear and ignorance of technology to believe the spurious argument and do her job for her.

I have been much cheered by the sheer number of Youtube videos and newspaper articles analysing this presidency in personal and political terms. Trump is an insecure child despite his years, trying to fill the gaping void in his self-esteem. As his personal ghost writer said, he has no concept of right and wrong, only winning and losing. It is therefore extremely unlikely that he will allow Musk to "beat" him by leaving the council - after all, if climate change doesn't exist, then Musk is adding no value to a valueless council.

The sooner this appalling buffoon is impeached the better. The idea of the podgy unstable finger hovering over the red button takes me back the the fear I had when I was a teenager.
