"bloatware-free"

Let us bow our heads and let our hair - those of us with hair of course; if your mien has floppy tentacles that's okay too - dangle toward our keyboards while we psychically project this thought upon an aetheric trajectory to light the minds of those who build and market the machines for our consumption.

The Shock of the New: The Register redesign update 4

Grade%

Ahhhkay.

I now 'get' what it was about the old design that drew me in and made me want to waste my time here: It felt like opening a crude tabloid! BUT! A crude tabloid with vast treasures of knowledgeable people, real knowledge, all flung about with devil may care snarkifaction that belied the impression. The wall of cleverisms, headlines, could be appreciated in a scanning glance and made one want to go, "Oooh, that one and that one and that one too."

Then the league of commentards would have at it and supplement the main articles oh so wantonly that a semi smile never left my face as I read.

Now? The site is like a myriad of others and doesn't feel like it bites anything at all anymore.

It really was better before. You revelled in your difference and it was merely difference for difference's sake. No, it was different because it was smarter. The front page had IMPACT. It grated a bit but that what the fuck do want if your mascot is a bloody vulture?

Gee whiz, guys. :(

The universe is full of fail.

There there. You'll be fine. Take that nice tissue over there and blow your nose. See? Feeling better already aren't you. Well, there's another teensy problemero with that menu bar that follows me around. See, I actually tried to use it and well, I like to right click and open the story in a new tab like. And well, once the mouse pointer traverses over to the right click menu, the drop down whatchamacallit disappears and I'm disconcerted like about what I'm opening in a new tab. It would be nice if the menu stayed until I was actually done with it. What would be nicer still would be that you got rid of it entirely -- at least stop it from following me around!

Grade%

Ouch.

My eyes were slapped by a giant photo as I clicked in. On a positive note, I spotted the Cash'n'Carrion link. The menu bar that follows my scrolling must die. Please kill it. Thank you.

Rich techbro CEOs told to sleep rough before slamming the poor

They dreamt big in the old days.

The glorious fifties and the expansion of the US economy is a tremendously fascinating time. It's evident that the inability of the present to formulate similar "real" plans like building an outlying megaplex tied to the metropolitan areas by high speed transportation links so that the blue collar workers can service the knowledge workers there is a symptom of corporate malaise and a desire to merely extract wealth at the lowest cost possible. To translate that: The social covenant that corporations should abide by is broken and needs to be reasserted.

I would advocate the lash, for these CEOs unable to better see the humanity in their fellow brothers and sisters. THAT, I think might help.

["requires subscription to either to XFINITY Digital TV or Voice service at regular rates" so add at least $20/mo for what is basically OTAOC (Over The Air Over Cable)]

Ah. Tied services shouldn't be allowed. Write to your congressman and demand that this practice be outlawed. Write to the FCC and demand that this practice be outlawed. Write to all your friends, neighbours, and countrymen to demand that this practice be outlawed. It is flagrantly anti-competitive and should rise the ire of any self respecting capitalist that has the good fortune to live in the Freedom Loving United States of America!

Sony reads the future, quits e-reader market says German report

Grade%

Shaking fist at sky

The PRS-T3, to us, was our entré into the e-reader experience and as a single purpose device it manages to do all that we'd hoped for. While not backlit, the Sony has an elegance in its construction with the rare now hard buttons. The tech used to detect screen touches are infrared leds x-y'd from the bezel and thus there isn't a capacitive layer to detract from the clarity of the text. I think the reviews were unduly harsh of this device and if you are inclined and able to get one the effort would be well rewarded. We love ours and were saddened that the Sony Reader store packed it in and sprayed the writing on the wall.

We aren't Sony-oids by any stretch but this, the Reader, was something special.

Sort of cool, but too $$$.

At the prices requested, somewhat too dear by half. A Pebbler grew from not liking or caring about the tech and found glancing at the wrist to be a quickly integrated habit. Though, the thought lingers that separation anxiety would mount the longer a certain generation left their mobile tucked in. So perhaps, the manufacturing of the market needs more baking time.

Personally, I attach sentiment to wristwatches, and looking at the time reminds me of loved ones more so than the information gleaned. But, perhaps that too, is a g-g-generation thing.

This mil spec stuff trickles (dribbles) down plebwise soon enough and then all lorry drivers everywhere will and can look for work elsewhere. The fallout should be interesting. How many premium hadware/software combination device companies can be supported?

I would imagine that there would be room for more than one. However, there has to be a reason for me to buy a product over the competitor. A kickstand? No. Not cool. A two position kickstand now? Sorry, but you are wronger. The only market this device has potential for would be dedicated application purposes such as education or museum tour guide or form input and other such singular things. As a broad based consumer device with an abjectly no fun point? It's clearly a winner.
