Robot deputy blasts possibly explosive Mexican beans with CANNON in 'controlled explosion'

ElectricRook

no kill like overkill

There is absolutely no kill like over kill. Then again, if you've got explosives, a license to play with them, and are earning say $100/hr why not go ahead and do the job. You also earn the vital R&R fodder (Ranking & Rating) so that you can prove your worth to the big boss i.e. I safely detonated X suspicious packages last year with no casualties.

missing the point

The point is that when the UN runs ICANN the members of the UN - ICANN committee can direct the techs to remove any name from the registry.

The sad fact is that there are a whole lot more countries who would conspire to silence a lot of voices than there are countries who believe in freedom of expression.

What will this look like? When you type in TheRegister.co.uk you would be directed to whomever UN-ICANN said is the owner of that domain, which could be SomeNastyDictator. Who could then demand to know why you surfing heretical web sites and not at prayers.

Re: it is on a volcano

The danger of volcanoes is related to the amount of silicon in the magma. Silicon makes the magma sticky. Continental volcanoes have higher silicon content.

WTF?

put the DR in a floodplain?

When I was an IT jockey, I discovered our DR site was in a place formerly called "The Natomas Basin". Now it is just called " North Natomas". I mentioned this to the PHB, who shrugged it off.

North Natomas is protected from the seasonal flood waters by levies built in the age of steam and electric pumps which rely on the grid. These systems are guaranteed to enable the location to survive the projected 100 year flood. Don't know if the test case can survive the every eleven years El Nino events.

SHIP OF FAIL: How do we right capsized institutions we thought would NEVER go under?

ElectricRook

Re: Perhaps a better question to ask would be...

Should we bother to right any of these capsized institutions?

Precisely, we should not attempt to right them. Nature abhors vacuum. Something will rise up to fill the place of the failed companies. That something will be the best parts of the failed conglomerates. Let evolution rule, survival of the fittest!

ElectricRook

Re: You've got it exactly backwards.

Oh no . . . no no no. Government is ten times worse than corporations. For one the government has the guns and plenty of men all too eager to use them. For instance in the US the department of education has a SWAT team! Plus the government licenses the press and often threatens them with the tax man who in case you did not notice has guns and their own SWAT team too. Governments cannot reorganize on the fly like corporations do. Governments blunder on into the fog. For instance, a government facility where I worked used paper tape and Hollerith cards as late as 1992! And yes that agency had guns and a SWAT team too!

step outside of your city mind

Open up Google earth and look at all of the land too steep or rocky for farming practices and consider that this is where the cows are raised. Very few of the global cow, goat, sheep herd are fed stuff from the farmable land. They also eat a large amount of the byproduct of human food production, such as orange peels and almond husks, asparagus stalks (the 2/3rds of the stalk that you don't see). Plus the fact that the food supply is a web and not a chain. There are many grains used to feed livestock and people. When the grains fall short the livestock become too expensive to feed. The livestock are slaughtered and become part of the food chain easing up the supply and feeding the people thus further easing up the food supply. The global exchange of food and commodities keeps us all fed. The real danger is the possibility that some pointyhead politicians will put their grubby mits into the works and mess it up (ala Mao Zedong and Stalin) that is how starvation happens on earth. All of our recent incidences of starvation have political causes.

It is all about the rent

Government is run by rent seekers, it always has been, and it always will be. Rent seekers fund the elections, and have the ears of the legislators. Legislators retire from office to become rent seekers. Legislators families are rent seekers who often transition into Legislators. Every NGO (Non-Government Organization) Red Cross, etc are staffed by the family members of the Legislators, they are rent seekers employed by organized rent seekers. We pay taxes to fund the rent seeker driven machine. I saw that a really big company in my town, one of the Dow 30 installed a few acres of solar panels. You guessed it, most of the money came from the government meaning that this large company like most all large corporations are somehow in the business of rent seeking.

It always comes down to people

Satellites might be one example of completely autonomous computers. But things stuck on the terrestrial surface, or even under the surface will always require an intervention bot (human) that can make judgement decisions for unlikely or unexpected events, such as what to do when the roof blows off of the building, or the cooling system has sprung a leak, mice have been gnawing at the wires, water leaking has rotted the floors. You might have a spare for the major components, but there are a million mechanical things that will need a human.

Re: Robin Hood etc

The persons who I lay the most blame for the financial crisis are Barney Frank and Chris Dodd. The two Democrat Senators who were in charge of the Senate banking committee. They had a goal of making houses affordable to all, even people who were too irresponsible to be able to buy a house. This caused too much cheap money to go chasing too few houses causing a real estate boom and bust.

The irresponsible people were all trying to "flip" a house, which is the equivalent of taking the rent money to Vegas and double it. But then that is what irresponsible people do.

Playing Robin Hood is what caused the financial crisis of 2008. Playing Robin Hood again will . . . I keep doing the same thing and I keep getting the same results.

I used to be the backup guy in one of California's largest data centers from 1999 to 2005. The numbers were gonna add up on our disks eventually, but the failure rate was far under 1% per year.

nothing is absolute

The heat sink will work because it increases the surface area of the hot chip. The plastic case is merely an inhibitor of heat flow, not an absolute heat shield. By spreading the heat out over a large area the plastic becomes a better conductor of heat. The plastics used in electronics is selected for it's heat conducting properties.
