London's Gatwick Airport flies back to the future as screens fail

Departure Control

This brings back the memories. I helped install the departure control system at Gatwick for British Caledonian Airways - some 35 years ago. I was working for Raytheon at the time. BCal had lots of pretty girls working the desks. I was on crutches due to a recent car accident.

Open plan offices flop – you talk less, IM more, if forced to flee a cubicle

They did this at the HQ of British Airways a long while back in their then new office. Judge the results for yourselves.

Hypersonic nukes! Nuclear-powered drone subs! Putin unwraps his new (propaganda) toys

A_Melbourne

No bluff

It would be very silly to think that Putin is bluffing. He is not like Reagan with "Star Wars." Putin is a serious statesman. Another thing he said a while back is that if Russia is attacked, the fighting will not only take place in Russia - like last time.

NATO has been bugging the Russians for decades and this is simply push-back. He is telling them that placing missiles on Russia's border - while pretending it is to protect Europe from the Iranians - is a waste of time.

We already give up our privacy to use phones, why not with cars too?

TripTax.com - how to speed up traffic on the cheap

I am waiting for the coin to drop and for people to understand that my proposal is:

1- Way cheaper

2- Highly flexible

3- Uses today's technology

4- Does not need infrastructure

5- Does not need any gadget in cars

Please check it out here:

A Practical Way of Improving Road Traffic

It is precisely because it does not offer big bucks to the fake privatisation companies that it will never be considered seriously as a contender IMHO

MH370 researchers refine their prediction of the place nobody looked

Just like for MH-17, this was deliberate and intentional. It will never be found.

BTW, the same party was responsible for both and it does not take a work of genius to figure out who was really responsible.

The silver Spitfire

My Dad was a main supplier to the British army in Egypt. At the end of the war, he and two other main suppliers were offered lots of "army surplus" gear almost for free. The Army was desperately short of money. One offer was for brand new latest model Spitfires - boxed and minus guns - for £100 each. A motor torpedo boat - minus tubes - was £500. He settled for lots of trucks and a miniature mining train engine with cars and rails.

Elon to dump Trump over climate bump

Good. Musk is one of those trying to profit from the AGW scam. His companies are bleeding cash on a massive scale and received $5bn in direct subsidies from Obama. More in indirect subsidies from the certificates that he sells to other ICE car makers. This guy is terribly overrated by those under 30 - and with no hard science qualifications.

Well done Microsoft. Cooperating with US intelligence services comes at a price. The Russians, Chinese and so on are moving away from American operating systems and software.

Facebook decides fake news isn't crazy after all. It's now a real problem

A_Melbourne

FB wants to go the same way as the MSM

The mainstream media is dying - because of its pervasive lying by omission and commission. Facebook should try and learn from the mistake of the MSM.

I subscribed to the Financial Times for around 40 years before getting fed up with their agenda. Now, I only look at the MSM to learn what is the latest lie that they are propagating or which piece of information they are trying not pass on to the general public.

Statoil has a leaking pipeline. They wanted to find the source of the leak and added iodine to the inlet at the offshore rig.

US Navy runs into snags with aircraft carrier's electric plane-slingshot

A_Melbourne

The whole idea behind aircraft carriers is quite redundant. Rockets are so much cheaper and don't need pilots. The aircraft carriers can't get close enough to their target so the aircraft cannot make the return trip. A total waste of resources.

The U.S. Navy’s Big Mistake — Building Tons of Supercarriers

The SU-34 is superior in every way to the A-10 - and can protect itself against air attacks

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sukhoi_Su-34

Even the SU-25 is way ahead of the A-10 on every count

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sukhoi_Su-25#Military_intervention_in_Syria

The trouble is that the Americans have never had to operate without air superiority. They have no idea how to fight the ex-Soviet way - as was demonstrated in the ex-Yugoslavia.

Londoners react with horror to Tube Chat initiative

"Is Australia starting to get an American complex?"

Well, they hurried to claim responsibility for killing 80 Syrian soldiers and to help ISIS - in order to share the blame with the Americans. I guess you must be correct.

We're not looking for MH370 in the wrong place say investigators

A_Melbourne

Not in wrong place

They are deliberately searching where they know that the plane cannot be. In view of this, "wrong place" is not quite correct.

They will always do whatever it takes to make it seem that Diego Garcia had nothing to do with it.

Smack them with an "enhanced" GST

Pretty easy to do. Let them keep their profits wherever they wish, but just stun them with a GST of say 25% for all business carried out in Australia. If they then decide to bring onshore a fair share of their profits, reduce the GST pro-rata.

It would sure put a lot of Australian accountants out of business - and upset Obama no end.

Chinese hacker jailed for shipping aerospace secrets home

A_Melbourne

I am not sure what possible use the Chinese could have of the details of the F-35. I mean, the Chinese are lending the Americans the money to build this albatross - at $200+million apiece.

Top rocket exec quits after telling the truth about SpaceX price war

Reality versus spin

Musk may well have a physics background, but he always panders to the masses' in all things practical - e.g. the laws of thermodynamics.

The idea of using precious fuel that was in orbit to land a spacecraft on an ocean-rig is as daft as they come. The weight of that fuel is equivalent to the payload that has been forsaken. At least the Space Shuttles did glide some of the way back to earth and used a heat-shield to brake the craft.

Truly dumb.
