Nadella tells worried GitHub devs: Judge us by our actions

msknight

Jude by actions...

"Oh, we've just changed the TOS so that we have a license to use all code, royalty free. Doesn't matter if you port somewhere else... it's all ours now. Too late."

That's over blowing it... but Nadella's problem is that people are already judging Micro$oft by its PAST actions. That's why everyone's going loop-de-loop.

Chief EU negotiator tells UK to let souped-up data adequacy dream die

Re: The more I listen to the EU...

"I think its more that the EU has baked its cake, is enjoying eating its cake. The UK wants it to change the recipe to something less palatable."

It's only palatable to the EU politicians... who have been changing the recipe in their favour for many years. Now those further down the food chain, don't like how it tastes - "Six More Countries Want Referendums to Exit EU" - https://www.armstrongeconomics.com/international-news/europes-current-economy/five-more-countries-want-referendums-to-exit-eu/

As for believing my statement.... I voted remain ... fact.... if we faced the same vote again, I would vote leave.

"Jean-Claude Juncker: UK faces hefty Brexit bill" - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-39042876

I have seen no article where Juncker compained that he had been misquoted, or otherwise challenged these reports... so I have to conclude that he meant what he said.

...and he spoke in French in Italy, where English is spoken twice as much as French, to make his point...

The EU is a worthwhile project. The way it is currently run, however, is not.

Re: The more I listen to the EU...

I do have to admit that Sturgeon was performing top notch politics. Standing up for Scotlands interests in the negotiations in parliament (rightfully so) and thus being part of the cause of delays as the UK decides on what it asks from the EU... and then hopping over to the EU and criticising the UK for not getting on with the job. "Poli" latin for Many ... "Ticks" blood sucking creatures. ... I love that quote.

Re: Well, duh

"Which as of March 2019 is none. That is what BrExit means. Exit."

Can't be done. Not in todays world where countries need to work together. Total exit is unrealistic. We've got to work with our international neighbours, even when there's an ocean between us. Perhaps even more so when the water is only a few miles across.

Re: The more I listen to the EU...

@iron - the candy coloured universe where the EU says, "Yes, we'll trade with you, but if you want to do that, you run your country according to our laws, and you trade with who we tell you to trade with, on the terms we negotiate." ... simplistic, in order to make the point.

The fact that we're still in the EU and our representatives have been jaunting all over the place, making deals, leads me to the conclusion that the average Joe is being fed a load of crap, does nothing to aid clarity.

msknight

Re: Well, duh

"Is it really a surprise? You can be in the EU and opt out of things, but you can't be out the EU and opt in to things."

That's not the problem. The problem is the things that we're already in.

It looks to me that the EU is willing to cuts its own nose off to spite its face, as it will loose the contribution of the UK in existing projects.

msknight

The more I listen to the EU...

...the more I conclude that it is the EU itself that is trying to have its cake and eat it.

The situation being faced is unprecedented, and their insistance on all or nothing, is an impractical approach when there are so many joint programmes still running. If anyone is being inflexible, then to my mind, it is the EU, while at the same time making it look like they are being utterly fair in not allowing a "third country" into the sphere.

That's one of the problems with the world today... it's gone all binary, when the true, honest path, is somewhere in between.

For the record, I was a remain voter until I heard Junker start talking after the vote. The more he talks, the more I conclude that the EU has strayed far off its political course and the project needs to be reset.

Software problems now

The latest delays are said to be because they've been forced to produce a license for every game being put forward on the platform. And yes, they should already have this, but no, there's a long story behind why they don't.

Chatter now, is that they'll release the hardware without any games on board. But anything can only be believed when it's seen.

IPv6 growth is slowing and no one knows why. Let's see if El Reg can address what's going on

msknight

Re: Internet task force takes IPv4 behind shed...

I'll happily concede that IPv4 makes censorship more difficult, as so many sites seem to be sharing the same IP. Any country trying to ban things has a bit of a headache on their hands, as Russia recently found out.

The bulk of the problem as I see it, are the companies that haven't got the resource to put behind training on IPv6 and have no impetus to do it. They don't want to break things. The colleagues in the industry that I've talked with, are majority opposed to IPv6 and don't want to budge. The business, won't drive it, because some management doesn't understand it and what it means. While we've got NAT, there's no internal pressure to make it happen.

So IPv6 being a worthwhile goal seems to be inverse to IPv4 being a pain in the proverbial A. People are more willing to find ways around the problems of IPv4, than get on and change to IPv6.

Honestly... the only way I see this change happening, is if IPv4 is formally discontinued, and the issue is forced. Otherwise, I can't see things moving forward much from here. Whether that's a good or bad thing, is up for debate.

msknight

Re: Internet task force takes IPv4 behind shed...

UK has rejected over 1,000 skilled IT bod visa applications this year

Re: I returned to Mint

Yes, I did mean Ubuntu Mate. Concussion.... no... suffering from the siren call of the pub... maybe....

msknight

I returned to Mint

I attempted Gnome, and still have Ubuntu on one machine for the latest graphics drivers. However, on the main machine I attempted Mate for a few months before I had to go back to Mint. I wanted to try and stick with mate, because Mint's packages and libraries are a bit behind... but in the end I reverted to Mint once more and endured the library/package problems.

I honestly believe that in a few years, we'll see Gnome revert.

Brit MPs brand Facebook a 'great vampire squid' out for cash

I don't seen this as sustainable.

For a start, advertisers have little recourse or check on what Facebook says are adverts served. Taking out an advertising campaign with Facebook seems, to me, a case of, "Here's my wallet... take what you want."

From a user point of view, adverts make even less sense. If I turn off adverts for politics, because I don't like politics, then that leaves people who do like politics and already have a position.... so are less likely to be affected by such adverts.

I'm not going to change away my use of Ariel, simply because I see an advert for Persil. No... they have to do a little bit more than just show me an advert.

I really can't understand why companies think that people with entrenched positions and loyalties, are going to be swayed by a simple advert. Give me a discount code or something, and then it might interest me... but all this advertising just seems to be so much pissing in the wind.

Furious gunwoman opens fire at YouTube HQ, three people shot

Flame

As a YouTuber...

Fortunately, I don't make my living from the platform. Indeed, I've started to switch to Vimeo. (actually, none of my content is monetised, and I actually pay for my Vimeo account out of my own pocket... but that's a different subject)

The problem as I see it, is that YouTube gave people a way to make money from creativity. Some people gave up their day jobs and made their living from the system. However, in a series of moves, YouTUbe took that away. Their bots have been taking down videos that in no way deserve to be either taken down or demonetised.

I had a video taken down, and got a strike, for a video demonstrating how to use a methalated spirit camping stove. The appeal was denied.

In YouTube's rush to appease the advertisers and make the platform totally "Won't somebody please think of the children" safe, they've screwed over so many channels and allowed the bots to run free... and they don't care about the impact that this has had on people's livelihoods. And as it's their platform and their rules, no one has any legal come back when they have had their living ripped from under them by a corporate behemoth that doesn't give a crap about the very people it has made its own living from.

So this, was bound to happen. And I blame YouTube/Google.Alphabet ... for not giving a crap about the people they have pretty much destroyed.

They are articles of trade. You exchange money for the software. They have also been paid for and promised, and are expected. They don't count as a service. The service is the electronic means (download link) by which the goods (software) are delivered.

This is going to run, and run, and run. Ultimately, I think CA is on a losing wicket with this one.
