So am I to believe that not capturing 5% of the internet users, which is probably as little as 2-3% of the total pool of potential customers, is going to ruin an industry (or even 2 - music and film)?

It's about time for you to also use your brain rather than something else (err, uterus?). Taking legitimate money out of it means putting illegitimate money in. With illegitimate moneys comes what? Exploitation, with no recourse to law.

Comparing to problems with Apollo - fatal fire, nearly fatal thruster malfunction, nearly fatal oxygen tank explosion, this is not so bad so far.
Come to think of it - Soyuz - fatal parachute malfunction, fatal pressurisation valve failure, near fatal pyro-bolt failure, not to say of a few unplanned ballistic returns putting a few unexpected extra Gs up the cosmonauts' backsides...
You cannot talk about engineering consistency at this stage. I'm pretty sure each new capsule they make is very different from the last one - has to be, as they are upgrading systems, fixing problems identified in previous launch(es) etc.
As far as I know most good acts were producing their best music at the time when they were still in dire straits, sorry, financial circumstances.
The money is not a problem for the industry - they seem to have enough money to maintain dedicated lobbyists and buy laws and politicians, yet for all that money they just mass produce commoditised "entertainment" for "consumption" by masses. The more they have their digital economy acts, copyright extensions, DRMs etc, the worse their output becomes.
I am not saying talented musicians should not be paid but that the problem is not in paying or nonpaying - it's in the current structure of the industry. They have become a self-serving parasite which benefits neither the performers nor the public.

I can understand their desire to present the biggest slap on their faces in recent months as a big success, but, really, they can just as easily point to the alignment of planets or voices of ancestors and that will be as credible and even a more plausible explanation.

But would they be able to resist "incentives" if offered to individual judges or government officials (that's probably too far-fetched...) or maybe some subtle diplomatic pressure which is not overt enough to be able to raise an international fuss about it but is easier just to accept and "push" the case through the legal system?

You sure you understand the meaning of the word "gay"? Or are you suggesting that if two gay people want to be in a legally recognised relationship they should each find and marry third persons of opposite gender? That means "equality" in your understanding?

Of course, if you pass by every Martian steel-head lizard, dismissing it as "nothing to see here", you won't ever find anything...
