Sony sucker-punches Xbox on price, specs, DRM-free gaming

Re: Enough already..

Another good point, will my PS3 controller work on the PS4?

Maharg
FAIL

Somthing good? Nope...

I read the Microsoft quote at the end as basically saying “We hope the fact we have Call of Duty first and Halo etc means that gamers will buy this in spite of all the crap we will put them through”. Unfortunately for them the games industry is full of examples of gamers going for alternatives to the ‘standard’ due to issues like pricing, un-welcome changes or just to try something different, otherwise your Sensible Soccer/Pro Evo’s of this world would not exist, and while Halo may be the biggest Alien based FPS it is no way the only one, even if COD, the biggest console game in the world was only on Xbox, there are plenty of other options to choose from,

As for Sony being good, they haven’t they just concentrated on sticking to what the people want, rather than forcing people to do what THEY want, it shows how much of a fail Xbox have made by the fact Sony did not have to do anything at all for people to be applauding them.

Or in other words

The argument could be made that the level of attacks is much lower due to the intelligence services being able to do these things, I’m not making that argument, but it could be made, For example the number of road deaths as a % to drivers has gone down in the last 30 years, so everyone can stop wearing their seatbelts again, because it has been argued “laws requiring the wearing of seat belts are an infringement of individual liberty”, I’m not making that argument either, but it could be made.

Yeah there are a number of different types of software but they basically have to option to drop and drag tracks around from the playlist, then each track has a countdown to when the vocal will start and will also flash red when there is 10 seconds to go so they know to make sure the next track, jingle etc is lined up or to open the mic,

Re: Just asked someone who did GCSE IT last year

Sorry to butt in here

I was under the impression that GCSE’s were for 15 year olds, and the idea is to show they have a ‘’basic” (no offence indented) competence in the subject, most people who do well in chosen GCSE’s (like computing) will go on to apply this ‘basic’ level to either further education in the subject, such as A Levels and then University, or go into apprenticeships or other roles in which they will learn more skills ‘on the job’, either way they will mostly end up in junior positions so again they can continue learning.

Do you think you could have had all the knowledge required to do the job you currently do when you were 15 years old? Keeping in mind you had only been able to write for around 10 years, let alone type, If so either you were exceptionally talented, or you might want to look for a new job.

As for “Dave” I guess he (or his speech writer) thinks coding is ‘modern’ because they were taught useful subjects like Latin and buggery avoidance at school.

Re: Pointless

Yep.

So currently if my card is lost or stolen I can ring my bank which gives me a one off code to enter into a cash machine and let me withdraw some money (after they verify who I am of course).

So what happens if my phone is lost or stolen? Will I be able to, I don’t know, have a bit of paper, or even plastic (as it would last longer) that this machine could scan in some way, and I could enter a code to make sure I can get money out?

Not that it matters, because as pointed out this kind of thing appeals to the type of people who want to use their phone to pay for everything, so why would they use their phone to withdraw money they won’t use?

On a side note I was in a petrol station last week, and there was quite a queue for one of the tills, and not the other, even though both had someone behind. Turns out they were having ‘connectivity issues’, one of the card readers was not working and the other was extremely slow and the 10 or so people waiting to pay by card or swipe their phone were taking an age to do it.

On the other hand I was able to walk up to the other till, past the queue, the girl behind it said “Sorry, the card machine is not working” I proceeded to produce a number of bank notes from my wallet to pay, to the amazement and shock of those around me, that I would be so silly to carry around cash to pay for things.

Just to rub it in I went back in a few seconds later and bought a bottle of water with the change, as someone tried for the 3rd time to enter their pin and have the guy stand on a stool and get signal.

Catch 22

I’m reminded of the conversation a character (I forget which one) in Catch 22 has with an old Italian man around the phrase “It’s better to die on ones feet then live on ones knees”, with the Italian saying it is the other way around, pointing out he would rather be smart enough to know how to live on his knees, then be brave and dead.

Thumb Up

A good read and very well written article, regarding the discussion while I agree the US Constitution was an important document, it must be remembered that it was mostly based on British law, for example the English Bill of Rights from 1689, it is also worth remembering that while the Constitution may have laid out the view on freedoms, rights and liberty, in practice for those Americans who were not of a certain skin colour it might as well not existed for around 150 years afterwards, The British abolished slavery a long time before the US, (1772 in England, 1799 in Great Britian,1807 Slave Trade Act stopping the trading of slaves, 1833 Abolishment Act freeing all slaves in the British Empire) and did not have a war over it, under British law no one has ever been denied rights due to the colour of their skin while in the US equal rights is still in living memory.

"No free man shall be seized or imprisoned, or stripped of his rights or possessions, or outlawed or exiled, or deprived of his standing in any other way, nor will we proceed with force against him, or send others to do so, except by the lawful judgment of his equals or by the law of the land."

Nicked unencrypted PC with 6,000 bank details lands council fat fine

Maharg

I guess a mix of user error and un-enforcement

I’m going to go ahead and assume following the last time Glasgow council probably invested time and money in producing a new policy for laptop encryption, probably spending lots of money to make sure it followed some ISO standard and they signed it off and said ‘that will stop it happening again’.

And left it at that.

And then it got down to department management, and some of them made sure their departments followed the new policy and procedures, and others didn’t.

And then it got down to the user level, and while some users did exactly what they have been told to do, others left their laptops in an unlocked desk in an unsecured building and probably had a post-it with “pa$$word22” stuck on the laptop screen.

Its these people who have screwed it up, and everyone will have to pay out of their wage packets/ tax money.

Every place I have worked I have found people that are just too arrogant, self-important or just stupid and seem to want to go do exactly the opposite of what they should, no matter who tells them, how many policies are made, how many awareness courses they go on, and then they bitch and moan when you take away their laptops and give them a desk PC at work because they can’t be trusted and treat them like a child.

Kids toys

I am a man with a twin sister.

My parents in their wisdom raised us to share very rarely got separate presents on our birthday, I remember one birthday maybe 7 or 8 years old where the two ‘main’ presents were a paint set and an electronic game where you had to more an animated man towards a dragon and try to steal his eggs, you could move backwards and forwards and had to time it so the dragon wasn’t looking otherwise he would breath fire on you, (this might date me somewhat). Neither me nor my sister were told which to play with, even the wrapping paper was the same on both presents, but my sister went straight to the paint set and I spent hours on that game.

The point I am trying to make is that I neither of us was forced to go one way, neither was told not to play with certain toys, but while we did share our toys, inevitably I went towards the more ‘male’ toys and my sister towards ‘female’ toys.

Women in IT has very little to do with discrimination, and more to do with them just not being interested in the subject, and while IT is maybe 90% male the HR and Marketing departments are 90% female, does this mean men are discriminated against when it comes to HR & Marketing?

If someone can do the job well they get the job, regardless of gender, however you can’t have more female IT staff if more female IT staff don’t apply, and I honestly think that’s not going to change regardless of any government set figures.

Re: A black Doctor

There have been a number of black males been mentioned, none of which I would have a problem with, in the case of Ashley Walters (who will always been known as Asher D to me) he has ticked all the boxes in terms of British actor, Grange Hill, the Bill, a couple of big parts in small films and small parts in big films as well as doing Shakespeare on stage, So I think he fits the bill quite well, he can act and my bring a bit of ‘grit’ to the doctor (as long as they don’t turn him into a cockney “gansta” as he has been cast as before).

I have no issue with him being black, but for some reason a women is a push, after all that would raise all sorts of questions around River Song.

My advice for the N8? Look after it and treat it well, love it, mine survived a lot but eventually died in a muddy festival related incident, I made the mistake of walking into a high street phone store and saying “I had an N8, it has died, I would like to get a new phone with a really great camera, to replace it.”

The person in the store said certainly, these are our best camera phones, so I chose one that was the same price as when I got my N8 all those years ago.

Nothing you can easily get on the market compares to the N8, I ended up with a Sony Xperia, and there is so much noise in anything other than bright sunlight it’s just horrible, (yes I have changed the settings, it just cant compare) the Samsung’s, HTC etc were not much better, and any that did have a half decent camera had a pathetic amount of memory with no removable SD slot.

For the first time in 3 years I have to carry a digital camera with me, instead of just the N8

Yes its wrong.

But it happens, it always happens and it always will.

Personally I subscribe to the idea that killing people is wrong, but that doesn’t stop other people doing it, and I don’t want to be killed, therefore to stop them killing me, I want the biggest stick possible, because if I have a big stick, and everyone around me has a big stick, then I will not be killed.

Whats better than having a big stick? People who are trained to use sticks better than everyone else, and their sticks are even bigger and have laser sights and can defend us from the people that want to kill us…

Then people don’t get killed.

You just have to make sure the people with the big sticks are responsible enough to use them only as a last resort.

Re: Religion

I see your point but I have to disagree, Religion was not created to kill people, it they are ideas made up a long time ago to explain the world and try to make people behave a certain way, while it has been used as a reason for killing it is not a tool for killing.

A gun on the other hand is a tool used for killing or at least hurting living things, sure I can kill someone with a screwdriver, but if someone asks “hey what’s a screwdriver for?” not very many people will answer ‘stabbing things’, but ask the same question of a gun, and everyone will say it’s for shooting.

A gun is a tool, religion is an excuse, I support a football team, but I don’t use my support of that team as a reason to attack supporters of other teams, but some people do, that doesn’t make supporting football teams bad or evil.

Maharg

Re: euphemisms

euphemisms

If two PIRA men did this they would be called ‘Dissident Republicans’ if some white guys killed a Muslim it would be because they are ‘Fascists’ or ‘Nazis’, if a couple of Christians did this they would be called ‘mentality disturbed’ regardless if they said it was done for the baby Jesus or not, at a push maybe ‘Religious extremists’, but not Christians, never the word ‘Christians’.

But it was two Muslims, therefore it’s not because they are ‘mentally disturbed’ or they are ‘Al Qaeda sympathisers’ or they are just evil scum, We don’t care about making up a euphemism to excuse their actions and distance ourselves from identifying with them.

It’s because they are Muslims.

Is that right?

Two things need to happen.

More coverage needs to be given to those in the Islamic Community who are against these actions, and more people in the Islamic community need to stand up and say they are opposed to these actions.

At the same time ‘we’, as in the White British Christian community need to stop calling these people ‘Muslims’, and start using the same BS language we use when a white Christian does something evil, because as long as we keep judging all people of the same faith by the actions of a few, the members of that faith are not going to side with us in a hurry.

Religion

While not being religious myself, I do have to disagree with this notion that religion causes death, destruction and hate, it’s just not true.

People cause death destruction and hate, they use religion as an excuse a reason or as a way to get more people on their side.

The majority or evil things that are done in the world are due to power, greed, hate and ignorance

Banning religion will not turn the world into a peaceful place, people will still kill other people, it doesn’t matter if they use race, sexuality, politics, football teams or the correct way to eat boiled eggs as the excuse.

Re: The guys were already known to the authorities

Got to disagree, if any of the civilians nearby had have been armed it would mean that guns are easy to get hold of, dramatically increasing the chance that instead of having an assortment of stabbing implements and one pistol this attack could have been carried out with a large number of firearms.

If they had more guns, they would not hesitate to fire at everyone else with a gun around them, and there would have been a much higher death toll, and a much more dangerous situation for the police to deal with, as it is the police shot them as they were running at the police to attack them with blades, change that to a couple of semi-automatics and the result would have been a lot different.

I’m proud to live in a country where guns are a rare thing, and the only way I would accept being able to buy a handgun is if I had to be trained to use it, and it was strictly controlled the way the Swiss do it.

Taken from Met Police statement.

"We have also addressed the speculation there has been about how long it took the Met to respond yesterday as this incident started to unfold. Police first received a 999 call from the public at 14:20hrs stating a man was being attacked, further 999 calls stated that the attackers were in possession of a gun. We had officers at the scene within nine minutes of receiving that first 999 call.

"Once that information about a gun or guns being present was known firearms officers were assigned at 14:24hrs. Firearms officers were there and dealing with the incident 10 minutes after they were assigned, 14 minutes after the first call to the Met. We must be mindful that the IPCC are investigating the police response to the incident.

To be honest that doesn't sound all that bad to me, given the amount of cuts the Police, including the armed response teams have had to deal with over the last 2 years, I can just see the MP’s, blaming the Police, just like they do the NHS,
