Jimbo Wales: ISP smut blocking systems simply 'ridiculous'

FAIL

Nomnomnom, wrong wrong wrong

“Oh no a woman has dared offer her opinion about the future of the internet!! Cue outraged howls of indignation from men...”

Everyone is saying the same things about ‘Call me Dave’ Cameron as they are Claire Perry, yet because she is a women you feel the need to defend her and not him and say the reason people are having a go at her is because they are sexist?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypocrisy

“Predictable. No doubt she'll come under a hail of abuse on Twitter from Trolls soon.”

An internet “Troll” is someone who posts comments on pages and threads to either disrupt, trick or annoy, example - posting a topic on a forum titled

“Can someone help please? I don’t know if I should I feed live crickets and bugs to my baby...”

Once clicked on full text is seen

Can someone help please? I don’t know if I should I feed live crickets and bugs to my baby snakes, or should I stick with dead ones until they are older, and at what age can they ‘hunt’ them at?

The ‘Troll’ uses the character limit in the topic header to turn what could be seen as a normal post into something that plays a joke on the users of the forum,

Another simpler example is in computer games when pretending to be a novice gamer, asking silly questions, example

Troll – How do I find the (item) to complete the (name of) mission?

Helpful Gamer – Its located in the (place name)

Troll – How do I get there?

HG – Look on the map

Troll – How do I get the Map?

HG – Press the M key

Troll – Whats a “M” Key?

Other gamer – Lol Don’t feed the trolls

What you are describing on Twitter when people post vile threating posts are bullies and in some cases are breaking the law

“Kids are using the internet more and more and we absolutely need to stamp out unsuitable material.”

No, We need to stop kids from viewing unsuitable material, not remove it, child pr0n is already illegal, this filter will not make even the smallest amount of difference when it comes to child p0rn, it doesn’t work like that, pedophiles don’t use Google to find images, it doesn’t work like that.

The ‘unsuitable material’ this will filter out is pretty much anything, for example I can’t use my mobile phone to find information about problems with my mobile phone because Orange think ‘Sony Mobile Web Forum Help’ is unsuitable because as a ‘web forum’ they don’t know what the content is, so it’s blocked.

So what can we do? If only there was some kind of parental control on that can be ‘activated’ to not allow your kids access adult content, oh wait, most internet providers have this option, all it needs is the parent to turn it on.

The difference is that currently if I want to stop kids using ‘my’ internet to view ‘adult content’ I have to say so, I have the choice.

when they go ahead with this stupid idea if I want to use ‘Sony Mobile Web Forum Help’ I have to contact my ISP and be put on a list to say I am a pervert who likes watching the most degrading smut filled snuff films.

“Clare Perry is absolutely right that we need filters in every device that will block this stuff out. “

As said before, we already do, people just need to be told to how to do it.

“Shame on anyone who disagrees.”

Shame on anyone who thinks this will a) Work, b) make any kind of difference c) absolves them of having to take responsibility in their parenting

In other words, we need to Educate, not Regulate.

Touch screen is all well and good, but doing anything fiddly on them I just can't handle, I can’t see half the screen because my man sized fingers are in the way, or it just doesn’t work as well as a dedicated button, for instance scrolling, my phone has a music player lets you scroll artists a-z, fair enough, but say I want to get to M half the time you end up on say J, you go down a bit, and end up on O, so back up and I am at K etc., all because my fingers are not invisible nor pointy.

Re: I have to wonder...

Run along and play now. But don't go too far, the American Government could be lurking anywhere. They'll snatch you up then torture you just like in that movie! Then they'll be taking your job! Ruining your life! They might want to put you in Gitmo!

Credit scores can be easily fixed unless it’s being ruined by the American Government as part of their ‘hassle a random innocent’ incentive. Possibly you keep your money and guns buried in your yard because you don't trust the Police?

“But you can't fix persecution by your own government and if you are willing to risk that persecution then you deserve it. Hell, you appear to be asking for it. Gagging for it”

Yes, it’s just like when you did well at school and got on well with the teachers they constantly kept you behind and gave you bad reports. What?

“Instead of worrying about a problem that has already been solved (identity theft and funds recovery) you should worry about what the government will be doing in 10 years with the information they've collected. You won't be able to do a god damned thing about it.”

They could, you know, know stuff about you, like what car you drive, or where you live, or what political party you are registered with, or where you work, or who your family are, or if you pay tax, or who you are married to, or where your kids go to school, or your medical history or if you are a registered gun owner or… oh wait…

You are confusing two entirely separate issues and hurting yourself and everyone else by doing so. You're throwing out the very principals that allow you live how you choose and focusing on imagined problems that don’t affect you. Letting the town burn down while you protect your house from NSA ghosts.

Just because cops carry guns doesn’t mean you will be shot the next time you see one, just because the Government can sit in a van outside your house, doesn’t mean they will bother doing it.

There I fixed it for you

Maharg

Re: No one cares about you. Or you either apparently, you need help before you stroke out

What determines a dangerous person is one thing, what the NSA can afford to determine as dangerous enough to warrant the cost, time and effort is another. As I said, we have had a few close calls that we know about, god knows how many we don’t, the idea that they are, or even could if they want to monitor and document what every single Muslim, Communist or left handed person does is just silly, even Joe McCarthy couldn’t do it when the internet didn’t exist and he had most of American on his side.

Maharg

No one cares about you.

You all remember ‘Tom’ the guy you would automatically get as your friend on MySpace? It was a way for the NSA to look at your profile!!!!!!!!11111

Anyone who thought they couldn’t do this is stupid, anyone who thinks they do this t to them, has a massively inflated ego, this may be a shock BUT YOU ARE NOT IMPORTANT, if they monitor you it’s because of one of two things,

1) they suspect you are dangerous, and you are not,

2) they suspect you are dangerous and you are.

When I say ‘dangerous’ I don’t mean because of you being such a free spirit, or that you follow Wikileaks on twitter, you think fluoride is a mind control drug they put in water, or you posted you don’t like Obama on facebook, I mean because you just came back from holiday in Yemen, bought a shit load of Ammonium nitrate, copper wiring and an old school ticking alarm clock and a copy of Catcher in the Rye.

If they had such a free run on doing this, and the black helicopters are constantly overhead, they would have so many unidentified serial killers running around? Or that guy who tried to set up a car bomb in Time Square would have been able to get as far as actually parking the car? What about the guy who set fire to his pants on a plan? You think they ignored him but focus on you instead?

This is not a movie, if someone gets shot you don’t hear Police sirens in the distance a minute later, the NSA are not spying on you, they could if they wanted to, but they don’t, and yes, NASA really did land on the moon.

Prepared for down votes.

Ministry of Fun launches news quiz - and the BBC is in its sights

Young people in 1960s were more liberal than previous generation shock horror!

"Now find me an equivalent quote from a BBC insider about right wing bias"

OK

Greg Dyke, described the BBC as part of a conspiracy preventing the radical changes needed to UK democracy

"I tried and failed to get the problem properly discussed when I was at the BBC and I was stopped, interestingly, by a combination of the politicos on the board of governors, one of whom [Baroness Sarah Hogg] was married to the man who claimed for cleaning his moat…

Why? Because, collectively, they are all part of the problem. They are part of one Westminster conspiracy. They dont want anything to change. It’s not in their interests.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8265628.stm

(I would like to draw your attention to the fact both the Antony Jay, and the Greg Dyke story have ran on the BBC

Maharg

I have no problems with the BBC, considering they are probably one of the most regulated and scrutinised news suppliers on the planet, I feel that I can trust them to deliver as closed to ‘balanced’ news as I am ever going to get.

Al Jazeera I use for Middle Eastern news, but as I don’t live in the Middle East how can I tell they are not biased? I can’t.

However both the aforementioned news sources I can watch and at least feel that I have been presented with at least two sides of a story, compare them to the content available to our cousins on the other side of the pond and you will appreciate the BBC, I would recommend watching Fox News, MSNBC or even CNN for a week and notice how many times you see a ‘discussion’ where the host ends up shouting down one of their guests, or that tactic of having 4 people as guests, 3 who agree with each other and the 4th some completely off the wall loon that everyone can make fun of. You can then make a tally of how many times they report ‘opinion’ instead of news.

If the BBC get something wrong, there is an inquiry, the BBC even report it, last year I was getting sick of all the BBC reporting on BBC reporting ethics, while on the other side Fox news didn’t even mention the News Corp scandal and phone hacking story, they just ignored it, even though it was picked up around the world.

There are many BBC bias websites and stories, what I notice is that the accusations of bias come from everyone, apparently the BBC are too left wing, right wing, they hate Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs, as well as pandering to much to Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs, in Northern Ireland they are much too pro Nationalist, while being firmly on the side of the Unionists, they lick the boots of the Tories, while toeing the Labour party line, they are in the pockets of both the Unions and the City, they focus on being too inclusive of ethnic minorities and not representing the actual racial makeup of the UK, while at the same time portraying the East End of London as full of white people, the BBC is pushing the Green Agenda, while one of its biggest programs is Top Gear and they don’t provide enough of a niche public service while making too many specialist TV shows and Radio programs that nobody wants.

In other words, if they are pissing everyone off equally, they must be getting something right.

Re: Hold On....

I must disagree

There was a film about two poor orphaned sisters living in a rundown home, the elder sister, still a teenager was trying to support them both by working long hours on minimum wage, they couldn’t pay the bills so the power was regularly shut off and the house was following apart, at the same time, the younger of the sisters, still a child, has behavioural issues, brought on by the loss of her parents and lack of any kind of family unit, due to being bullied at school, she often cuts class and spends most days roaming the streets stealing and getting into trouble.

One day she is found by the bully and her gang, she gets in a fight and ends up injuring the bully, this is promptly reported and social services launch an investigation, to try to take the younger sister into care.

While this happens a dangerous wanted criminal arrives and befriends the younger sister, she helps hide him from the authorities and teaches him English, and shows him affection and sweetness that changes his outlook on life, he even helps a local boy who is in love with the elder sister gain her affection and they become a couple, and the four of them become what they all wanted, a family. Unfortunately both the authorities and social services are closing in and a it is just a matter of time before they are discovered and the family that they all crave is split up forever.

I also saw a film about a family who are attacked by a serial killer, while the father is knocked unconscious the killer murders the wife and all but one of the children, leaving the only surviving child physically disabled.

As the child grows up his father is over protective, afraid of losing the his only son, the child becomes rebellious and starts acting out, and is then kidnapped and taken away as a slave.

The father has to overcome his fears, and with the aid of his mentally disabled friend escape from a murderous gang and travel thousands of miles to rescue his son.

The first one was called Lilo and Stitch, the second was Finding Nemo.

The issue isn’t 46 hour working weeks, the issue is Apple have said the maximum should be 60 hours, and these factories are exceeding that.

I also assume you get paid a tiny bit more for your 46 hours, you don’t work on an assembly line, get a decent holiday entitlement plus pension, and you are not pregnant.

Transit Vans

Using the car analogy, sure I know how to drive, I do a lot of it, but I would not say I have more than a ‘basic’ understanding of how it works, which is the same as the ‘average’ PC user.

I know the right sequence of actions to perform to make the car move forwards and backwards, and at varying speeds, as well as change its direction, work the lights, radio windscreen wipers, I even know how to change a tyre, as well as a host of other things like changing oil and filling up with fuel to operate it and do so in a safe manner.

That is the basic knowledge, and that is all I need it to do.

90% of people who use a computer know how to do the equivalent, as what I described, it is a tool, they need to know how to turn it on, type, use a mouse, construct and send an email, browse the internet, fill in online forms, use Word and Excel, insert a device in and use it to print, scan a photo, store information or play a game or music as well as a host of other things, but they still don’t need to know how it works.

Trying to convince people not to use Microsoft is like trying to convince me that I should have a Transit van instead of a car, after all in a Transit you sit higher up and see more of the road, there is much more space to store things in the back, the fuel consumption is better, the side mirrors are bigger and you get two on each side so I can see more around me, there is more places to put drinks and the glove box is huge, the engine is bigger and the whole thing is stronger, tougher and al round more useful than a car, hell, even the wheels are bigger! I can’t think of a single thing my car has that is not in a transit.

Logically we should all be driving transit vans to and from work, so why don’t we? Is it because we are ignorant? Lazy?

Or is it because for what we need a car is the simplest, most comfortable and for 90% of us a van is just unnecessary?

Re: Nanny State ?

There is a difference between censorship and restrictions, stopping law abiding citizens from viewing perfectly legal content is censorship, stopping children from viewing restricted content is different, those tools are already available, and this is going to make no difference.

I don’t get put on a list saying I drink beer before I can enter a pub.

The next step is having to register to watch films with violence in, in an effort to stop people being violent, so the next time you want to watch the Godfather you have to contact someone and say “yes I do enjoy watching people being murdered”, meanwhile society carries on raping murdering and robbing each other, but the Police have a handy list of people to round up.

“Is there any evidence that the accused committed this sexual assault and then stabbed his victim to death?”

Why Yes your honour, this man not only lives in the area the crime was committed in, but he is a predator, you just have to look to see he is listed as enjoying murderously violent and graphic sexual content, that contains the theme of using blades to kill women, he is viewing this so often, sometimes more than once a day for almost a year now, and in his house we found an assortment of knifes and other dangerous instruments!

Re: tales, of a sort

Just a few points to continue this, while I again, agree with much of what you said, you assume that Louisiana would have fallen to the British Empire, but could it not be assumed that any attack on Louisiana may have resulted in not only an adequate defence, but even a reversal and invasion of British/American lands by the French (and Spanish)? (Much in the same way when the US invaded Canada in 1812 the White House ended up being burnt down?) After all, the French (and Spanish) were hardly a force to be trifled with, they managed to stop the Royal Navy from bringing its full might in the American Revolution by attacking the Caribbean, and it’s not like a march into the 13 Colonies would be comparable to Russia in the winter.

As for the import of slaves stopping in 1808, that law may have been passed, but it was not enforced on the American side, and Slaves continued to be bought and sent to the US up until much later, between 1808 and 1860 the Royal Navy freed and transported back to Africa over 150,000 slaves being transported across the Atlantic, and while the majority would have ended up in Spanish lands a large number would have been headed to the US.

You are also forgetting that with the Louisiana Purchase came a large number of slaves, 10,000 in Missouri alone.

As for the measurements,

The imperial UK gallon, = 4.54609 litres,

The US gallon, = 3.785411784 litres

UK Pint = 568 millilitres

US Pint 473 millilitres

But in the interest of cross Atlantic relations, I will let you fill it with fizzy cold piss water, or Bud light or whatever its called, instead of the brown murky warm crap we drink over here!

Re: tales, of a sort @ Irony Deficient

Well done that man!

To be honest I am very much aware that I glossed over a lot of fact when writing that, but it was all in the name of fun.

Although on review if I had put the word ‘Free’ in front of ‘man’ when referring to the Magna Carta then the argument would still stand, as in the 1960s the US didn’t have slaves, yet they also didn’t have equal rights, and I was careful to use the words ‘legally all men in England’ after all, once you persecute a population and throw them out of a country, they are no longer in that country are they? (I also used the word ‘men’ to gloss over the point women didn’t have equal rights until the 1900’s either)

As for all Britons having the right to be the monarch, unless the Royal family change religion I don’t see that being an issue, considering how much power they actually have, however you just need to look at what happened when a Non white became president, and all of a sudden people starting trying to prove he wasn’t American!

The 13 US colonies had Representation in Parliament, the issue was they wanted 1 MP for each colonies rather than 1 which represented the governance of all 13, in the same way as all other colonial collections were represented, as for the argument that they were ‘British’ so should have had more representation, so were the British living in other parts of the world.

While I agree with your assertion of the size of the slave trade in 1830, However! Consider this, in 1830 the US was a lot larger then in 1776, in 1790, when the first census was taken, there were 694,207 Slaves in the US if the US had remained part of the Empire, and therefore neither expanded much further Westwards, (as France and Spain would have not sold the land to the British Empire) and the transportation of Slaves was stopped in 1807 its pretty safe to assume that the amount of slaves would have been much lower, as nearly 20 years of slave increases would have been cut leading up to 1790, and then the 40 years afterwards to 1830, even giving the US a generous 1 Million slaves, that estimate has just been halved.

Seriously the point about the US not being able to abolish slavery in the same way as the UK it I totally agree with, in fact whenever I have had conversations about this in the past I have had to explain this point, often even to (self-loathing) Americans, but as I said before this was an exercise in good old fashioned British friendly ribbing.

Thank you for responding with a good sensible argument and debate, you get a thumbs up, a resounding “Jolly Good Show” and British imperial measurement Pint.

Re: Are you telling me...

I think the sad fact is people in the US are still shocked to find out nobody in the rest of the world, let alone the UK know who the ‘Phillies’ are, yet I bet you have heard of Manchester United…

But what can I say? It’s no surprise coming from the country that gave us the World Series, which is not played outside of one continent, and call a game played predominantly using hands ‘Football’.

In the UK we regard ‘baseball’ as an overhyped version of Rounders, which is a game played by 12 year old school girls, in plaid skirts and woollen jumpers, all be it with a smaller bat then baseball. You know to make it difficult.

And while we are here, in 1776 a bunch of rich slave owners in 13 small bits of land on the arse end of the world who thought they were more important than the whole of India in terms of representatives in the British Parliament, disregarded what 65% of the population of those 13 bits of land thought and sided with the French and Spanish, (who had been attacking and murdering them for the last umpteen years, hence the tax to pay for the defence of the 13 bits of land) so they could pay less tax then the rest of the Empire and not be forced to treat black people better and go for a rampaging genocide of the Natives, who the British had agreed to protect.

FYI, if the US had never left the Empire, not only would you have not had a war over slavery, but it wouldn’t have taken you 200 years to live up to the promise of giving equal rights to all men, (you know what year they legally gave equal rights to all men in England, regardless of race, creed or colour? 1215.)

You would also drive on the correct side of the road, have better table manners (elbows, off, knife and fork in hands at the same time, not one or the other), be polite, beer would come in larger quantities, fewer adverts on TV, and you would have universal health care like the rest of the civilised world.

While I don’t doubt the impact there is a difference when saying half of them were crippled in the title and then saying attacked in the text is quite a discrepancy.

For example I was ‘attacked’ by a daddy longlegs last night while reading in bed, however I was far from crippled due to the experience, it tried the old ‘rope a dope’ on me by moving around in the air in a seemingly random pattern almost as if it was unaware of my existence, but I used a magic spell, gained +10 on my attack power and defeated him with my cunning ninja skills and powerful weapon disguised as a hardback book, afterwards the townsfolk carried me on their shoulders and proclaimed me the new king and a bevy of fair maidens laid before me in awe ready to… ah sorry, went a bit off the point there…

Eminem is not the exception, Eminem is the overrated one of the three, he had two maybe three and a half good albums, with some really good songs on the first two, but when you have Dr Dre behind you they are not going to be terrible, and while he has got skills, if he was black no-one would care, go up to your average Daily Fail reader and ask them if they have heard of Talib Kweli, Raekwon, Mos Def, Common, Rakim or Nas, they will have no idea, at a push they will know 2Pac, but everyone knows Eminem, now ask them to name any songs, “That one with Dido?”

Jay Z on the other hand has made hit album after hit album for the last 20 years, credit where credit is due, Jay Z has never been afraid to do things he finds challenging or different, from doing an album with Linken Park to crying all over Song Cry (the live version with the aforementioned Mary J He continues to influence the music scene , The Black Album is easily in the top 10 best albums of the last 10 years not rap albums, just albums

Even though I am a much bigger fan of Nas I can admit this.

As for ‘Rap’ being over hyped and empty, its possibly because all anyone hears is the pop crap, judging Hip Hop by its pop form is like judging any other type of music by its pop form, so instead of Led Zeppelin and the Beatles you get Busted and One Direction.

“I’m not a businessman; I’m a business, man!”

I think it’s a bit unfair of anyone addressing the blame at him, I really doubt Mr Zed spends time reviewing the access permissions on apps, he probably at the most is shown how it works, changes the colour or font in some text a bit so it can be sold as being designed with him, and then gives his approval, if that. Instead the focus should be on the company actually made this app that just happened to use Jay Z’s new album as its launch.

Win 8 BS

I don’t understand these comments that say ‘great phone, great camera, but they need to get rid of windows 8’, I have an android, I had a iPhone, I have played about on my girlfriends win 8 phone (not a euphemism) you know what I found, they are different, you know how much of an impact it had on me? None, this phone works this way, that phone works that way, really don’t care as long as it works.

What happens if the reason they are locked up is because of anti-government propaganda? And could you say post “China Sucks!” and then “I Love China” repeatedly and nothing happens.?

Re: Tripartite IT departments

And I have been on the receiving end of that phone call, explaining that we don’t just have a row of computers/laptops ready to go off the shelf to fill every need at a moment’s notice, that there is some work involved and it would be nice if, you know, someone told us this was going to happen and gave us a bit of notice so we could have had one waiting for them on day 1 (and no, 5:30pm on Friday to be done by Monday morning doesn’t count, while we do work weekends it’s the things we can’t do during the week, rather than the things you have known about for a number of weeks/months but just not told us yet) but as always IT seem to be the last to be informed that there will be a need for their service

Not just Microsoft

You can guarantee they have everything else, If you don’t want The Man ® to have the chance to look at your emails the best bet is to use some Russian, Iranian or North Korean option, then at least the Americans will have to put some effort into spying on you (and being aware that the Russia, Iran or the Norks are already doing it, probably without a court order).

On a side note, as I have stated before I am not really worried, I am under no illusions that they can see what I am doing if they want, I am a realist, anyone who thought this ‘could’ not happen if they wanted it to is very naïve, the surprising thing for me is thy bothered getting any legal backing, and while I don’t subscribe to the ‘if you have nothing to hide…’ mentality the amount of time, money and man power it would take to monitor everyone’s email, phone calls, movements and online presence is ridiculous, it’s more a case of ‘I am so unimportant I really doubt they would bother’. That is until Obama announces his new plan to combat unemployment and the NSA has 100 Million new jobs going, then I will get worried…

BS Corporate marketing language

lets break the statement down without the spin.

Today, we are announcing a far-reaching realignment of the company that will enable us to innovate with greater speed, efficiency and capability in a fast changing world.

far-reaching realignment ( read: changes, possible job losses- see also ‘streamline’) enable us to innovate (good words that mean Sweet FA) greater speed (you mean ‘faster’ but this way you get to put the word ‘great’ in and make the drones happy), efficiency (read: changes, possible job losses) capability (do better) fast changing world (keep up)

Or in none spin speak – We are making changes so we can continue what we do, only without as much waste, possible job losses.

Empower people? Activates they value the most?

“Hey mate, coming down the pub? No sorry, I need Microsoft to ‘Empower’ me”

“Honey are you coming to bed? Not yet, Microsoft haven’t ‘Empowered’ me” (wink wink)
