There have been plenty of cases of nurses that go off their wheels and kill patients. An overdose here, an injection of Succinylcholine there, an air bubble here. Lots of ways to off someone inside the hospital that are difficult to trace.
Even if it werent hacked, an infusion pump that is adjustable and exposed to the wrong person is dangerous enough, let alone one that is hackable.
Saw this happen in real life with my own two eyes and ears. And no, if you are section 8, the whole rent and even some utility costs can be paid directly to the property owner.
Everything else you mention doesn't happen in NY State where you can get LIFETIME welfare benefits. The age of majority to emancipate yourself from parental regulation is 16. Getting pregnant seals the deal and qualifies you for every benefit including housing. Yes, there is some wait for housing but the cash rolls in regardless.

My ex girlfriend was a property manager for subsidized housing for well over 10 years and yes, the "Welfare Queen" is alive and well in the Buffalo, NY area and everywhere else in cities in the USA.

She personally handled the paperwork for dozens of them in her apartment buildings and knew the status of their children. Children who left the roost, got pregnant, got welfare and immediately tried to get section 8 housing subsidies at the same apartment complex where their mother lived.
Every family consisted of a single parent and multiple children and were completley dependent on welfare for everything.
This apartment building would ONLY take Section 8 clients as the payments go directly
to the apartment owner.
Any payments made to the "Welfare Queens" never made it to the building owner and the "client" was soon evicted (actually took over a year to accomplish eviction and costs thousands to do it).
You can quote all the so called studies you want. Reality beats academia every day.

In reference to last paragraph. There are boilers that come with a special "Outside Air" temp sensor that is (wait for it), located outdoors and provides a different ramp rate for the heating equipment if the OA temp is wamer or colder.
Thats what you are really looking for.
Turning the setback or away temp too low will result in having to heat the whole system up everytime the boiler fires. Boilers do not like cycling and you are damaging the boiler tubes by doing that. Not to mention that you are wasting fuel and electric because the on time is greatly increased.
Depends on the thermostat whether it has a "modulating" output that is compatible with the gas valve on the boiler and it's electronics. There are several types of "modulating" output and input signals available. This is an area that should be covered by the HVAC company that put in your boiler or funace. They should have provided the right T'stat in the first place. Many times the electronics in the boiler/furnace takes an "ON/OFF" signal input and modulates the fuel accordingly.
In any case, a thermostat does not need an outward facing internet connection to operate.
Scheduled or timed operation is simple and has been available in simple programmable thermostats for years. Just be patient enough to program the start/end times for 7 days and you are done. Takes about 15 minutes if you RTFM that came with the T'stat. One setpoint for day and one for night is really all you need although some t'stats do have more capability.
Thermostats don't need to "learn" anything about your daily habits unless you are supremely lazy or ignorant of their operation.
Active Occupied/Unoccupied operation can use an "Occupancy Sensor" (whodathunkit) instead of timers to determine if anyone is home and thus will save money for the single person who is gone most of the day by not raising the temperature beyond "Night Setback" temperature until you get home.
It's only going to save money over timed operation if you have an erratic schedule and no one else occupies the home.
Moronic ideas like giving the Gas or Electric company remote internet access to your thermostat will not save YOU any money, only the Utility company. Renting ANYTHING from a cable TV/Internet provider is an even worse idea.
If CyberLock manufactured an Access Control system that could be easily defeated then they are the ones at fault, NOT the people at IOActive who are trying to show how and why the CyberLock product is faulty.
IOActive at least needs to file a countersuit, and show an independent investigator the results of their tests.

EVERY Insurance company that paid a claim based on the faulty "security" provided by CyberLock would agree. Like another poster, I would love to see 30,000 government employees out of work but the problem is that the wrong 30,000 people would get let go.
We need a President that can bring people together, not one that rips them apart. We have quite enough of that right now. The country is divided into two camps and there is no middle ground.

We need a way to manage immigration and visas for those immigrants that can be or are already contributing members of society over this willy nilly illegal immigration that only causes an additional drain on scarce resources.
We need to foster some respect for our real public servants over the temper tantrums of disruptive, entitled thugs.

US is typically 200 Amp service rating for new build homes. 100 amp is normal service rating for most older US homes and is minimum code in many locales. 40 amp service went out with the Dodo bird. Code says new service and breakers are required to sell most homes. No more fuses, period.
3kW isn't enough to power most US homes even intermittently. You would struggle with 10kw in most large modern homes.
Regulations are stacked in favor of the utilities and it may even be illegal to go off grid if you have existing grid power available.
Inverters typically convert DC or direct current to AC or alternating current. The AC can be used in an "Off Grid" application to make the Solar electricity usable by everyday standard equipment - Motors, Refigerators, Electronics, etc.
The AC produced by the inverter can be backfed into the main power system if they allow it. They call these systems "grid-tie". Lots of extra equipment like automatic transfer switches and utility power quality inspections needed to get the utility to pay any money or balance out your bill. Let's just say that utilities hate paying their customers.
Resistance heating elements technically don't really care if the power is DC or AC. Only the electronics that control the elements do. You could easily run lighting, electric baseboard or a kettle directly from DC power. However, batteries won't like high loads like that unless the battery banks are pretty big. You have to match the battery bank to the load over the time the load will be present.
If you want a cheap system and are willing to compromise then the offgrid style system will be best for you if your municipality will allow it. Total up the wattage of all the equipment you use, add a safety factor, calculate the size of the DC to AC inverter and batteries you need to satisfy the load and then size the solar panels so they can supply enough power to the batteries to run the equipment through the system. Every time you convert from DC to AC or back you will lose at least 10-15% from inefficiencies.
You don't make any money off such an "Off Grid" system you just don't have much of a bill.
With some management of load types you could come up with a reasonably priced system. You will likely have to do with wood heating, air drying and no air conditioning but you could run almost everything else you need from solar or wind power just not at the same time like when connected to the main power.
Just remember, almost everything about solar is a compromise in one way or another.

Energy storage devices such as Tesla's can only be considered "Green" when charged during the day because the power from Solar and Wind only occurs during daytime hours.
Almost the same amount of traditional generation capacity will still need to be available to replace renewable energy as most of the world just does not get enough sunshine and wind every day.

The Samsung Edge phone is designed to showcase "bendy" display technology just like their curved Ultra HD TV's. The fact that the "Edge" of the display functions as a notification area is only a secondary benefit. All MS and Samsung share is a generic name.
It's not a bad phone, just expensive but hardly as pretentious and useless as Apples iWatch. The only issue I see is that the curved edge of the phone will be easy to break and it will be difficult to provide a protective case for it while still seeing the notification area.
Perhaps it is due to their want to push Win 10 and Win phone as the same platform. All the other Microsoft OS's have been announced as obsolete already. The idea of write once, run anywhere is a good concept if it can be accomplished and if continued and maintained; could be a powerful reason to upgrade to Win 10 for the enterprise customer.
IE was always too deeply integrated into the OS in previous versions and would require major changes of obsolete OS software to work on these older systems.
I don't see Safari for Windows coming out anytime soon. Chrome is already an OS and a browser so it can run on the older and newer Windows systems or by itself on a Chromebook.
The idea of apps that run in both Microsofts and Googles playgrounds is a powerful advantage to the developers out there. I hope it works.

The Baltimore Police showed remarkable restraint given the circumstances of these riots that are ona scale close to the Watts Riots that spead across the country in the late '60's. They are only "militarized" to protect themselves from murderers that feel they can act with impunity.

The rioters not only threw rocks like softball size at the cops but they also committed arson several times. They give up ALL rights when they do that and they are fair game especially when they invoke the movie "The Purge" (look it up in IMDB) by calling for a "Purge" in a flyer that was distributed amongst high schools to stir the unrest.
1950's era Electromechanical Controls are pretty much immune to hacking because there is no computer or PLC that needs to communicate with anything. Direct sabotage is possible but more difficult, unless some thieves steal all the wires for scrap value.
They also have the benefit of being less susceptible to EMP than electronics.

My $75 Invicta I bought at Sam's Club 4 years ago is still on the same battery. My $350 Suunto runs about 2 years on 2) CR2032 Li batteries, an old Casio I've had for 15 years still works and runs 2 years on 1) CR2032.
All cheap watches with exception to the Suunto and they all have better battery life than Apple's toy watch and are still working fine. No reason to "upgrade" them, they are just watches but they have easily replaceable batteries.
The only thing that would attract me to something like their so called "watch" is a fully functioning cell phone the size of a watch, prefferably one with PTT and Bluetooth capability.

If you look at modern appliances (White Goods) there is only a fairly small circuit board in a basic washer, dryer or stove. That leaves the motor. The rest is mostly the outer shell and drum.
This increases on an "Energy Efficient" model as they now have speed drives and other circuitry.
Still, by weight the "E" waste is only a very small proportion of the overall weight (Hardly 2-5%) that is being reported as it includes the whole assembly not just the electronics portion.

Have you ever heard of Yelp? or Angies List? They provide similar systems that effectively do the same thing.
If any company was going to test the legal waters it would have been those companies as they are structured around positive or negative reviews.

If Eric Garner had simply given them his wrists and let them cuff him, he would still be alive today. He didn't. He resisted arrest. That was HIS fatal mistake, not the cops.
He broke the law. If you don't like the laws then change them. THIS law was a favorite of DiBlasio the Mayor as he hated smokers and selling single cigarettes without regard to age is a pet peeve of the Mayors office. The cops were enforcing the law as written.
It wasn't until it took three cops to pull him to the ground and kneeled on him, compressing his chest did he stop resisting being cuffed.
In some cases, running from a cop IS enough reason to get shot. It make you a criminal right away as you are resisting arrest by running. A cop looking for an armed suspect that just committed a heinous crime that looks just like you, doesn't have to ask twice.
Here's some advice, take a deep breath, answer the cops questions, shut up and provide a valid ID.
99 times out of 100, you will walk away alive and unhurt. You may get a ticket but that's about it.
If you'd rather run, then the cop has no other info but to suspect you are an armed criminal with something illegal on your person (weapon, drugs etc), or an outstanding warrant for your arrest.
At the very least, he or she is going to make sure you don't run again when they catch you.
You can bet money you are not going to get the same treatment as if you just gave them an ID and calmly asked "what is this about officer".
It's YOUR choice to do something --- smart or stupid; you reap what you sow. The cop didn't MAKE you run, your own guilt did.
Just wait until all the whining brings the advent of the "Personal Security Certificate"
