Infusion pump is hackable … but rumours of death are exaggerated

Dan Paul

You forget the "Killer Nurse" syndrome

There have been plenty of cases of nurses that go off their wheels and kill patients. An overdose here, an injection of Succinylcholine there, an air bubble here. Lots of ways to off someone inside the hospital that are difficult to trace.

Even if it werent hacked, an infusion pump that is adjustable and exposed to the wrong person is dangerous enough, let alone one that is hackable.

Re: Sitting Ducks @Eric Olsen

Saw this happen in real life with my own two eyes and ears. And no, if you are section 8, the whole rent and even some utility costs can be paid directly to the property owner.

Everything else you mention doesn't happen in NY State where you can get LIFETIME welfare benefits. The age of majority to emancipate yourself from parental regulation is 16. Getting pregnant seals the deal and qualifies you for every benefit including housing. Yes, there is some wait for housing but the cash rolls in regardless.

You are so full of your so called "Education" that you only believe what you read in studies, not what happens in real life.

Take your over-educated head out of your butt and see what is really happening. Who said anything about "going after welfare queens"? I just said it was happening all over and that people should not get benefits without something in return like work.

But hey, don't that get in the way of your leftwing propaganda and lies.

Over 50% of the people in this country recieve some kind of social support payment. Fraud is rarely investigated because that could be considered "racist".

The rest of us work for a living and I for one am sick and tired of supporting the lazy ones with my taxes when I don't get a say in how they are spent.

Dan Paul

Re: Sitting Ducks @Eric Olsen

My ex girlfriend was a property manager for subsidized housing for well over 10 years and yes, the "Welfare Queen" is alive and well in the Buffalo, NY area and everywhere else in cities in the USA.

It's not a strawman argument.

She personally handled the paperwork for dozens of them in her apartment buildings and knew the status of their children. Children who left the roost, got pregnant, got welfare and immediately tried to get section 8 housing subsidies at the same apartment complex where their mother lived.

Every family consisted of a single parent and multiple children and were completley dependent on welfare for everything.

This apartment building would ONLY take Section 8 clients as the payments go directly

to the apartment owner.

Any payments made to the "Welfare Queens" never made it to the building owner and the "client" was soon evicted (actually took over a year to accomplish eviction and costs thousands to do it).

You can quote all the so called studies you want. Reality beats academia every day.

No ruse, just simple fact, no weasel words just real life examples... and none of it came from a questionable source like NBER who has a leftwing socialist agenda.

Re: Sitting Ducks @Eric Olsen

You really want humanity to reach the lowest possible common denominator don't you?

If you give money to the seriously drug addled, they will keep spending it on drugs until they either die or grow up. Most choose to die high.

The same with welfare queens that have been on welfare for 40 years and have raised 4 generations of children to think if I can just get pregnant I can get my own welfare check and my own apartment. Keep making the problem worse by supporting the source.

Just so much to aspire to in your world. Why even go to school and learn when you can get welfare? What possible reason could you have for becoming "better"? That word doesn't exist in your world.

If people have no compass (moral or otherwise), they lose their way and most fail.

The idea of "superiority" is only a problem when you have already defeated yourself by not trying.

If you don't even try to strive towards a better life, you're already lost and should just kill yourself.

Why don't you rent your electronic wireless doorlock, asks man selling doorlocks

Re: I'm a Luddite...@Unicornpiss

In reference to last paragraph. There are boilers that come with a special "Outside Air" temp sensor that is (wait for it), located outdoors and provides a different ramp rate for the heating equipment if the OA temp is wamer or colder.

Thats what you are really looking for.

Turning the setback or away temp too low will result in having to heat the whole system up everytime the boiler fires. Boilers do not like cycling and you are damaging the boiler tubes by doing that. Not to mention that you are wasting fuel and electric because the on time is greatly increased.

Dan Paul

Re: 'be at 20C by 06:30' @AC

Depends on the thermostat whether it has a "modulating" output that is compatible with the gas valve on the boiler and it's electronics. There are several types of "modulating" output and input signals available. This is an area that should be covered by the HVAC company that put in your boiler or funace. They should have provided the right T'stat in the first place. Many times the electronics in the boiler/furnace takes an "ON/OFF" signal input and modulates the fuel accordingly.

In any case, a thermostat does not need an outward facing internet connection to operate.

Scheduled or timed operation is simple and has been available in simple programmable thermostats for years. Just be patient enough to program the start/end times for 7 days and you are done. Takes about 15 minutes if you RTFM that came with the T'stat. One setpoint for day and one for night is really all you need although some t'stats do have more capability.

Thermostats don't need to "learn" anything about your daily habits unless you are supremely lazy or ignorant of their operation.

Active Occupied/Unoccupied operation can use an "Occupancy Sensor" (whodathunkit) instead of timers to determine if anyone is home and thus will save money for the single person who is gone most of the day by not raising the temperature beyond "Night Setback" temperature until you get home.

It's only going to save money over timed operation if you have an erratic schedule and no one else occupies the home.

Moronic ideas like giving the Gas or Electric company remote internet access to your thermostat will not save YOU any money, only the Utility company. Renting ANYTHING from a cable TV/Internet provider is an even worse idea.

Security bods gagged using DMCA on eve of wireless key vuln reveal

Re: Unable to Confirm Fault Free?

If CyberLock manufactured an Access Control system that could be easily defeated then they are the ones at fault, NOT the people at IOActive who are trying to show how and why the CyberLock product is faulty.

IOActive at least needs to file a countersuit, and show an independent investigator the results of their tests.

As said elsewhere in this thread, the DMCA does not apply in this situation.

In reality, the greater good is the security work done by IOActive and they should publish it anyway as CyberLock has no case under DMCA.

EVERY Insurance company that paid a claim based on the faulty "security" provided by CyberLock would agree. If you produce a lock intended or advertised to secure life or property as did CyberLock, you automatically must have engineered out such "bugs". If you did not, then anytime there was an assault or theft the manufacturer can be held fully liable.

HP wag has last laugh at US prez wannabe with carlyfiorina.org snatch

Dan Paul

Carly Fiorina is a waste of time

Carly Fiorina is a symptom of whats gone wrong with business and the Presidency today.

She and her minions only know how to destroy a company to satisfy utterly retarded activist investors needs. They do not know how to BUILD anything, ever. That's no way to be President either.

Look what her protoge Antonio Perez did to once proud Eastman Kodak. Now they may have legal recourse as below.

http://www.democratandchronicle.com/story/money/2014/12/18/judge-suits-kodaks-perez-others-go-ahead/20582743/

The GOP has enough problems fielding a viable candidate without letting Carly cause more.

Like another poster, I would love to see 30,000 government employees out of work but the problem is that the wrong 30,000 people would get let go.

We need a President that can bring people together, not one that rips them apart. We have quite enough of that right now. The country is divided into two camps and there is no middle ground.

The trouble is that we have been doing things the "Democrat" way for 40 years, (spend and tax) and nothing has changed. What we need are jobs, not more welfare or socialism. Those programs only make people dependent on them just like hard drugs, instead we need to make the individual able to independently support themselves and their families. Then teach them some viable skills that they can use to better themselves beyond what the government can ever provide.

We need to put permanent tariffs on the products of any company that ships jobs overseas, so we can support the people that they left behind and keep what we have here. That money could pay for retraining, relocation etc.

We need a way to manage immigration and visas for those immigrants that can be or are already contributing members of society over this willy nilly illegal immigration that only causes an additional drain on scarce resources.

We need to foster some respect for our real public servants over the temper tantrums of disruptive, entitled thugs.

No one seems to understand or care that thousands of our police and teachers are assaulted and hundreds killed every year. They only get upset when it happens to one of them. I say too bad.

Where's the riots for the 3 dead cops recently killed in NYC? Where's the moral outrage over the beheading of hundreds of Coptic Christians overseas?

I'll tell you where...everyone is too politcally correct and cowardly to say anything about it. Which brings me to other qualities any Presidential candidate needs, candor and honesty.

Obama outright lied about what he stood for. He wasn't at all honest about anything because he knew he had to lie or no one would vote for him. He blames the cops and supports criminals when it should be the other way around. He supports and fosters ex-Weather Underground bombers and New Black Panther members, Islamic Fundementalists and military deserters over the rest of the population. He gives lip service and makes false promises to our Veterans.

"Hillarity" Clinton thinks the laws of this country don't apply to her or Bill and they have been skirting the law for 40 years. No one has had more investigations than them. She made a mockery of the position of Secretary of State and violated any number of laws during her tenure.

We need a Ben Carson or someone similar. Hopefully someone who won't be blackmailed by Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson types. Someone who can stand up to the lies and bluster of the Left.

Tesla Powerwall: Not much cheaper and also a bit wimpier than existing batteries

Dan Paul

Re: @dom

US is typically 200 Amp service rating for new build homes. 100 amp is normal service rating for most older US homes and is minimum code in many locales. 40 amp service went out with the Dodo bird. Code says new service and breakers are required to sell most homes. No more fuses, period.

3kW isn't enough to power most US homes even intermittently. You would struggle with 10kw in most large modern homes.

Regulations are stacked in favor of the utilities and it may even be illegal to go off grid if you have existing grid power available.

Dan Paul

Re: Inverter?

Inverters typically convert DC or direct current to AC or alternating current. The AC can be used in an "Off Grid" application to make the Solar electricity usable by everyday standard equipment - Motors, Refigerators, Electronics, etc.

The AC produced by the inverter can be backfed into the main power system if they allow it. They call these systems "grid-tie". Lots of extra equipment like automatic transfer switches and utility power quality inspections needed to get the utility to pay any money or balance out your bill. Let's just say that utilities hate paying their customers.

Resistance heating elements technically don't really care if the power is DC or AC. Only the electronics that control the elements do. You could easily run lighting, electric baseboard or a kettle directly from DC power. However, batteries won't like high loads like that unless the battery banks are pretty big. You have to match the battery bank to the load over the time the load will be present.

If you want a cheap system and are willing to compromise then the offgrid style system will be best for you if your municipality will allow it. Total up the wattage of all the equipment you use, add a safety factor, calculate the size of the DC to AC inverter and batteries you need to satisfy the load and then size the solar panels so they can supply enough power to the batteries to run the equipment through the system. Every time you convert from DC to AC or back you will lose at least 10-15% from inefficiencies.

You don't make any money off such an "Off Grid" system you just don't have much of a bill.

With some management of load types you could come up with a reasonably priced system. You will likely have to do with wood heating, air drying and no air conditioning but you could run almost everything else you need from solar or wind power just not at the same time like when connected to the main power.

Just remember, almost everything about solar is a compromise in one way or another.

Tesla reveals Powerwall battery packs for homes, Powerpacks for cities

Dan Paul

Re: Much needed publicity for energy storage at last! @Richard L

I agree with your comments.

Energy storage devices such as Tesla's can only be considered "Green" when charged during the day because the power from Solar and Wind only occurs during daytime hours.

Almost the same amount of traditional generation capacity will still need to be available to replace renewable energy as most of the world just does not get enough sunshine and wind every day.

Apparently the "Greens" and politicians still don't understand that the wind does not blow all the time and sometimes it is dark outside.

Re: Do we really need to tell the enemy what our plans are? @ P.Lee

The fact is that the public does not "need" to know everything that a government does or when they are going to do it.

You are just giving away your plans and might as well just call the enemy (whomever that may be) and tell them exactly what you are going to do.

We can see that for at least the past 5 years, that "social media" has been the coordinating method for riots and unrest everywhere in the world.

What kind of idiot would think we don't already have a plan to shutdown all communication across the country or specific regions? We've had that ability with POT's service since the 1950's.

Shutting down or jamming cell service is an extension of that capability.

Many so called "Journalists" are nothing more than instigators these days. Why would you trust them? Their trust approval is as low as politicians.

BTW, there wouldn't be any Internet or "free Wifi" if there was a nationwide shutdown of communications, the fiber backbone would go dark too!

Any "citizen" using cell jammers might think twice as thats a Federal crime, they ARE going to triangulate your position and they will find you.

Of more importance, how about taking some personal responsibility for your own actions or lack of same instead of rioting? That single mother from Baltimore should go after the rest of those idiots and give them a good bitchslappin too!

If you won't go to school, how do you learn? If you don't even try educate yourself (because it's not "Cool") you can't blame anyone but yourself if you can't find a job as your "problems" are the result of a self fullfilling prophecy. No education, no job. How is that anyone elses problem but your own? If you don't respect anyone, why should you get respect? If you won't work, why should I or anyone else give you a job or any income? Get off your lazy ass and WORK if you need money.

The government is not the root of our problems, we are. We have overcompensated for 50 years and created several generations of "infants" that think the whole world should be handed to them on a silver platter. When they don't get their way, they throw a temper tantrum. They need to grow up and learn that their actions put them where they are now and they can't keep blaming everyone else.

Dan Paul

Do we really need to tell the enemy what our plans are?

Eff all this idiocy. Namby Pamby IDIOTS have been clamoring for the government to divulge state secrets and rules of engagement for far too long. We can't win if you tell everyone exactly what we intend to do.

The enemy (whom ever you want them to be) should not get our battle plans and other state secrets emblazoned on any web page or a white paper or put in the Code of Federal Register for all to see.

Of course THIS administration has done everything it can to assure the failure of any military action as they are diametrically opposed to the military and even sympathize with the enemy.

This is Sparta? No - it's Microsoft Edge, Son of Internet Explorer

Dan Paul

Re: Edge?

The Samsung Edge phone is designed to showcase "bendy" display technology just like their curved Ultra HD TV's. The fact that the "Edge" of the display functions as a notification area is only a secondary benefit. All MS and Samsung share is a generic name.

It's not a bad phone, just expensive but hardly as pretentious and useless as Apples iWatch. The only issue I see is that the curved edge of the phone will be easy to break and it will be difficult to provide a protective case for it while still seeing the notification area.

Dan Paul

Re: Close, but still no cigar @Paul Crawford

Perhaps it is due to their want to push Win 10 and Win phone as the same platform. All the other Microsoft OS's have been announced as obsolete already. The idea of write once, run anywhere is a good concept if it can be accomplished and if continued and maintained; could be a powerful reason to upgrade to Win 10 for the enterprise customer.

IE was always too deeply integrated into the OS in previous versions and would require major changes of obsolete OS software to work on these older systems.

I don't see Safari for Windows coming out anytime soon. Chrome is already an OS and a browser so it can run on the older and newer Windows systems or by itself on a Chromebook.

The idea of apps that run in both Microsofts and Googles playgrounds is a powerful advantage to the developers out there. I hope it works.

I think you could tell it was deactivated.

Id be more concerned about an "Airsoft" replica of an AK type gun. They look exactly like the gun except they don't shoot bullets, just plastic BB's.They are everywhere here.

If you pointed that at a cop, he/she would likely consider you armed with a real weapon.

Today, the US govt must explain why its rules on shutting down whole cell networks are a secret

Dan Paul

Re: Baltimore...I call BS Fatman

The cops in Baltimore can only be faulted for the bad collar of Gray and listening the the standdown order from the Mayor. Take your BS elsewhere, anything these cops did or used is COMPLETELY justified by the actions of the rioters.

The Baltimore Police showed remarkable restraint given the circumstances of these riots that are ona scale close to the Watts Riots that spead across the country in the late '60's. They are only "militarized" to protect themselves from murderers that feel they can act with impunity.

However, that still does not exonerate the looters and swarms that attacked various commercial companies and the Mall in Baltimore.

Those scum should have all been arrested and locked up. Some should have been shot dead on the spot. If "Black lives matter" it is SURELY not these lives that do as the thugs drove stolen cars into the police. That is assault with a deadly weapon for sure..

The scum that shot the two Police Officers in New York City came from the gangs of Baltimore.

The rioters not only threw rocks like softball size at the cops but they also committed arson several times. They give up ALL rights when they do that and they are fair game especially when they invoke the movie "The Purge" (look it up in IMDB) by calling for a "Purge" in a flyer that was distributed amongst high schools to stir the unrest.

If that makes my comments to have been directed at "Filthy Euros" as you say in your post, then lets be blunt. They are directed at the EU & EUC and EVERY one of their legal "decisions" smell funny. Just like bribery and influence peddling on the behalf of the Fair Search Alliance. And if you were even trying to be honest about it you would agree.

Never said the US does not have stupid laws, but that's not the subject of these posts, is it Dogged?

We have LOTS of stupid laws, many on the books are simply unenforceable for their antiquity.

American companies break the law all the time but not in THIS case Dogged. And they are not the subjects of these posts are they?

Google has done nothing illegal, only perhaps their results in some circumstances are questionable and that question would not have even been brought up if it weren't for the undue and illegal influence peddling of the people behind the Fair Search Alliance who are trying to get Googles search algorithims exposed. As if.....and there is the reason for my statement that there is a "continental case of sour grapes"

None of them can create a search product that even comes close to Googles so they bribe, whine, lie, cheat and sabotage Google at every opportunity.

And while we are at it, there are a few British companies over here like National Grid, BAE and BP that DEFINITELY have not exactly been known for good business practices.

Still, by weight the "E" waste is only a very small proportion of the overall weight (Hardly 2-5%) that is being reported as it includes the whole assembly not just the electronics portion.

Trading Standards pokes Amazon over 'libellous' review

Dan Paul

Typical EURO answer

British libel law is way out of touch with the Internet, and has no legal power over Amazon. If you did sue them, you better have some very deep pockets as the other side of that is you are FULLY liable for everything spent if you lose the case.

And you call Americans litigeous.

Dan Paul

Re: Trading Standards

Typical Euro arguement, lets grass up (Insert name of any American web based company) because a commentard left a crappy review about our product that we didn't like.

The issue of "Libel" or "Defamation" is ONLY between the actual negative reviewer and the company or person getting the negative review, Amazon just provided a service and a forum for feedback. They have no business censoring or editing the review and are not liable for what its' posters say.

Have you ever heard of Yelp? or Angies List? They provide similar systems that effectively do the same thing.

If any company was going to test the legal waters it would have been those companies as they are structured around positive or negative reviews.

http://ideas.time.com/2013/01/07/yelp-reviewers-beware-you-can-get-sued/

"Under federal law — 47 U.S.C. § 230, to be specific — websites like Yelp and Angie’s List are shielded from being sued for defamation, but the writers — people like Perez — are legally responsible for what they write and lawsuits can be filed against them. That may not be what a lot of people are thinking when they go on Angie’s List or Amazon to air grievances. In fact, Perez told the Washington Post that when she posted her reviews it never occurred to her that she might end up in court or on the hook for thousands of dollars in legal fees — not to mention the monetary damages. Dietz is suing for $750,000, and awards can go far higher than that. In 2006, a jury awarded a Florida woman $11.3 million in damages against a woman who made defamatory comments on an Internet message board.

The Virginia Supreme Court’s ruling is an important defense of people’s right to go online and express their views. But it is also a reminder that anyone who crosses the line may have to pay up — big time."

Diblasio is supposed to be the type of mayor that liberals like you just love.

Re: He did not commit the other crime

If Eric Garner had simply given them his wrists and let them cuff him, he would still be alive today. He didn't. He resisted arrest. That was HIS fatal mistake, not the cops.

He broke the law. If you don't like the laws then change them. THIS law was a favorite of DiBlasio the Mayor as he hated smokers and selling single cigarettes without regard to age is a pet peeve of the Mayors office. The cops were enforcing the law as written.

It wasn't until it took three cops to pull him to the ground and kneeled on him, compressing his chest did he stop resisting being cuffed.

Re: He did not commit the other crime

In some cases, running from a cop IS enough reason to get shot. It make you a criminal right away as you are resisting arrest by running. A cop looking for an armed suspect that just committed a heinous crime that looks just like you, doesn't have to ask twice.

Here's some advice, take a deep breath, answer the cops questions, shut up and provide a valid ID.

99 times out of 100, you will walk away alive and unhurt. You may get a ticket but that's about it.

If you'd rather run, then the cop has no other info but to suspect you are an armed criminal with something illegal on your person (weapon, drugs etc), or an outstanding warrant for your arrest.

At the very least, he or she is going to make sure you don't run again when they catch you.

You can bet money you are not going to get the same treatment as if you just gave them an ID and calmly asked "what is this about officer".

It's YOUR choice to do something --- smart or stupid; you reap what you sow. The cop didn't MAKE you run, your own guilt did.

Personal Security Certificate

Just wait until all the whining brings the advent of the "Personal Security Certificate"

which you will have to purchase every year in order to be allowed to use the Internet. It will be as difficult to get as a new Social Security Number, get melded into a "National Identity Card", give the alphabet agencies your real identity immediately, and automatically stamps "666" into the back of your head in the middle of the night.

All that and it will cost at least $100.00 annually. And it still won't be enough identification to allow online voting as it would prevent dead people from voting.

Papers please!
