Ubuntu lovers slap Canonical over Firefox EULA

LaeMi Qian
Stop

The solution has been there for days

The branding has been separated out into a separate package which you can choose not to install for days - the packages to install unbranded came up in my 'new packages' list in synaptic days ago (abrowser - which is a Canonical supported package set).

@ Kanhef ;-)

I think it might have been more along the lines of sitting at the pub "What creature might survive that?" "Well waterbears can survive just about every extreme the surface of the Earth can throw at them, so..."

The gold standard in data storage?

LaeMi Qian

Conventional wisdom is that...

...write once disks last far longer than RW.

Also it depends on how often the disk is accessed - your burned music CD that goes through the car CD-player every morning will be lucky to last 2 years out, but the same disk stored properly and only accessed a few times to retrieve lost data could well last decades.

Down here in Aust. there were a whole bunch of banned plates featured on TV a few decades back. My favourite was 6ULDV8 (The 6 should be read with a New Zealand accent as in "6 is between 7 and 8").

I block, but not all.

I am a bit particular about what I block. I respect that sites have to pay the bills, but resent having to foot a bill myself in return (I am on a fixed per-month download limit).

As mentioned above, Google-like text banners and small static images don't bother me at all and I explicitly allow them on any site I visit regularly (such as elReg). But anything that moves or is huge or is slow will generally get on my black list quite quickly. And I have never found a site anywhere that I couldn't live without if they want to get stupid on me.

Reg readers split on Vista readiness

LaeMi Qian

Vista can be very stable

I work at a quite large Australian organisation in the IT dept. and my senior manager went to some big-wig state-wide managers' meeting to discuss things like Vista. I don't think MS was involved in the meeting.

What she bought back was the feeling that Vista is excellent if you are running Office 2007 and other software written with Vista in mind (and actually following MS's formal APIs). Anything that doesn't fit this category (and there is a hell of a lot of poorly written code out there, even from major vendors) will quickly drop you into hell.

If it mirroes true life...

If "It simply mirrors real life" then I hope any plastic surgery carries an appropriately weighted risk of coming out worse than you went in, not to mention the risk of random account deletion proportionate to death-on-theatre-table risks. And the surgery should degrade to the point where it needs to be repeated at appropriate intervals, the intervals shortening each time virtual surgery on the same body-location occurs. And realisticly random bulgarian airbag failure (I guess we can assume saline filler these days rather than carcinogens). As SMH cartoonist Kaz Cooks said in her book "Reel Gorgeous": "Why would we experiment on animals when we have women?"

Hmmm, the latent educational software developer in me can see potential for this idea being subverted into something actually useful.

My map

I have a big map of the world on my PC. Everytime a country does something that REALLY offends my sense of humanity, I open it in GIMP and edit my map, mostly by colouring offensive regions in with ocean, though I have been known to move/add borders, or rename countries to more descriptive and appropriate (generally NSFW) titles. If I am feeling merciful, I will just turn the capital cities into a new bay and give the rest of the country a chance to start over. My world is now 3/4 ocean instead of the 2/3 it was this time last year when I started. I won't specify locations of new seas as it is intended as a purely personal thing, but Antarctica is the only continent to escape an edit so far.

I find it very stress relieving.

Okay. I checked Wikipedia...

And if I have to face a PHB for a job interview I cam say "According to Wikipedia, Twitter is..." (I need not finish the sentence as I have by then either won or lost the IT interview decisively, depending on whether the interviewer has an IQ above or below 103).

Seems to be some sort of web site you can send/receive group SMS messages from. Nice idea I guess for those who use SMS, but I think I will stick to IM since I am generally more accessible on that than on my Mobe^H^H^H^H MoPho anyway.

big stores bring jobs and money. yeah

Like the hardware superstore that was built in my mum's town. It created 180 new jobs, by putting out of business 3 smaller hardware stores resulting in 240 people being retrenched. Then, with the competition gone, they jacked the prices through the roof and there is nowhere within 150km where you can get a piece of wood that wasn't loaded onto the boat only half-cured and is hence warped like a pop-art sculpture by the time it is on the shelves.

Same with the big cloth store in same town that put all the local fabric shops out of business then trippled its prices overnight (really, it was overnight of the final competing store closing its doors). Then a few months later the ceiling of the store fell in in heavy rain and everyone has to travel 1 hour up the coast to get fabric for the next 6 months. And the idiots amongst the locals that went all starry-eyed over the 'big city' convenience they were getting can't understand what has happened or why the local economy is so bad lately.

I do wonder where all this money that these big stores supposedly bring to places that didn't have them before is supposed to magically spawn from, so I can go camp there ;-D

Man cuffed for lamppost sex outrage

oh dear! what will some guys NOT try to have sex with!

though to be fair on guys, there were some rather obscenely-shaped bollards out the front of my high school that tended to be rather polished on the top from all the simulated sex they got with some of the less savory female students (they were a tad too large for actual real use... then again, some of those girls were reputed to be rather... ahem... capable)

To quote Aust. Radio/TV announcerJohn Blackman

"Like meatloaf through a straw... these are the days of our lives"

Having read the article makes me feel all dirty as I haven't felt since I stopped reading my mum's New Idea or Woman's Weekly magazines many decades ago (the latter is actually published monthly for over a decade now here in Aust. but I guess calling it 'Woman's Monthly' was out... then again, considering the severe cramps I get in my frontal lobes from reading the cover at the supermarket checkout.........)

Even my mum gave up reading them long ago.

Please don't do this again. Even the opportunity to to mock-a-pedia is not worth enduring knowledge of these people's tiny tiny lives!
