Secret US-Pacific trade pact leak exposes power of the copyright lobby

Mark 85

Have a libation before lying down. You realize of course that this is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg, right? Only the negotiators and their handlers know what else is in there. Good grief, I'm American and this is pissing me off royally.

All the warm, fuzzies by politicians and corporate types is actually (and always has been) just so much bovine excrement behind the barn. We've come of the age, finally, of "trust no one".

STOP! You – away from the keyboard. There's no free speech in our China

Mark 85

Re: hmm

"Say it" is one thing. "Posting it" seems to be what this is about. And we think we have intrusiveness... the only difference is, the Chinese are probably used to this by now as they've had local snitches (for lack of a better word) for decades. This just escalates it.

The rest of us are just learning about our government's intentions. Perhaps we need to take a closer look at China and even Russia to get some idea where things are headed.

You assume an educated and thinking banditry... There's a reason that gangs in general don't have education and thinking members. The leadership, yes. The members are exploted for the "good" of the leadership.

As for the "higher" price... corporates will object as that cuts into their bottom line. The gangs would, at some point, realize that they're being paid blackmail money and want more.

Cop shops mock cop for cop stop flop: He'll cop it for copping it up - top cop

Mark 85

Re: Nice business

Or maybe he's doing what some fake cops did about 20 years ago in Ohio ? The fake cop would pull over cars looking for sweet, young things to have his way with in exchange for not giving them a ticket. He just wasn't paying attention to whom he pulled over this time.

Epson: Cheap printers, expensive ink? Let's turn that upside down

Mark 85

Re: Hm..

If they really wanted to make a difference, why not establish an industry standard for printer ink, let anyone make that, and then the printer companies can compete on price and quality of their printers?

Why not? Profit and market share. One can't level out the playing field anymore as there's just too many greedy folks involved.

Drone delivery sparks Ohio prison brawl

Mark 85

Many prisons in the States do have a gun (cannon maybe?) that fires a net. In the not too distant past there were attempts to break prisoners out using a helicopter. I'm not sure if they still have this available, however. I'm sure this same or similar device could be used on a package carrying drone.

If you read anything today about ICANN taking over the internet, make sure it's this

Mark 85

What a mix...

Politics, accountability, some lawyers, and then the tech side being minimized. This is asking for trouble but on the good side, it may never be resolved so things for the time being will stay in place and continue to work.

OFFICIAL SCIENCE: Men are freezing women out of the workplace

Mark 85

The temperature battles rages on...

We had VP that used to complain about the server room being too cold.. yes, a she and she was taking visitors in there. After about a month, we suddenly started getting temperature alarms on a regular basis from the server room. One of the IT types noted that it happened on days we had "visitors". The lady was coming in early and re-setting the thermostat in the server room. Once we figured it out, a memo came down from the CEO about locking down the server rooms from all visitors and those "not required to enter the room" and also locking down the thermostats. Our server room is now a good place and a great place to hide out when a certain VP goes on a rampage.....

Sick of politicians robo-calling you? Bin your landline, says the FCC

Mark 85

Re: It's a trap

I would add that from my perspective.. if you're human and call to sell me or scam me, you deserve all the invectives I can muster.

Mark 85

I'm not buying this...

Even so called town hall meetings have a political agenda. For any elected official to call is 99% of the time not "informational". They call because they are selling themselves. If we apply that logic to commercial callers than they should be claiming that their calls are informational to let you know about their product/service/scam.

The title says it all.. sadly. If I'm going to eat, I want it be a) tasty b) satisfying both physically and mentally.

Sorry, I've tried the commercial protein shakes, etc. and would rather skip a meal than use them.

Mark 85

I thought the reason we evolved..

...was to cook.. bbq... make things tasty and crispy. This stuff sounds like an abomination but I'm sure that as soon as someone like Oprah or Dr. Of-The-Month shows up in the media recommending it that it will take off.

New US cyber laws will hit privacy and security, says Homeland Security

Mark 85

Re: Sad...

I think that might be a plus... being a comedian gives him a sense of cynicism and irony which politics seems to be full of. Maybe we need to elect more comedians?

Mark 85

Getting scary...

When DHS gives a rat's patootie about citizen "privacy"... it's time to be afraid... very afraid. That they seem more concerned about not being the clearing house for all the information speaks more about the power centers in Washington than anything else. Unbelievable....

Hacking Trump: Can we not label web vandalism as 'terrorism', please?

Mark 85

@Henry Wertz1 Re: Broken polling system and "terrorism"

I don't disagree with you on Ross Perot's numbers, etc. However, the man didn't take himself too seriously during the campaign. His sole purpose for running was to thwart Bush as he had a major personal feud with the man. And lets face it... nothing was as entertaining as one of his infomercials that ran for a half-hour or an hour (depending on where you were). Remember: "a large sucking sound"?

Mark 85

For comparison...

This isn't without precedent.. Ross Perot did reasonably well in the polls also. But, I think both he and Trump do/did well only because of their entertainment value. When the election actually hits, the two parties will have their way with us. So... enjoy the show, toss all the popcorn you like and clean it up in the morning. Politics as usual will return.

Websites that ID you by how you type: Great when someone's swiped your password, but...

Global spy system ECHELON confirmed at last – by leaked Snowden files

Mark 85

Re: I don't even know anyore.

They're merging so it seems. As corporates take over control, the likes of NSA and GHCQ will become merely redundant or possibly finding a new role using data fed to them from the corporates. Yes, I believe "freedom" as we know it is more restrictive than "freedom" as some of our ancestors knew it and will be something else down the road a bit.

The people you want for this are a bit "outside" the norm. So they should relax or change the requirements.

Windows 10 collects colossal 0.375 per cent market share in July

Mark 85

Here's one possiblity...

I've had more than few "friends" (note to self... unfriend soon) who wanted me to come over and "fix Win10". After suggesting that they call support I've not heard from them. I suspect there's an awful lot of people who have downloaded and installed (really MS? 67 million?) are now sorting things out. Most are probably not back on the web yet.

Post-pub nosh neckfiller: Bacon and egg sushi

Mark 85

A true post-pub nosh..

...would be to combine several of these recipes. Only because after a tankload, one tends to mix and muck things up badly. At least that's the way it is around our place. So much so, we've taken to preparing the nosh and putting in the fridge before we leave, sometimes a day early.

Which reminds me, I think there's something in the fridge from a week ago or so.... need to check and if it's blue and fuzzy*, toss it.

Windows 10: Buy cheap, buy twice, right? Buy FREE ... buy FOREVER

Mark 85

A lot of things unsaid behind the scenes...

Yes, MS could suddenly start invoicing for "upgrades", patches, etc.

Or as has been pointed out, they want your data for advertisers.

By pushing this to the PC and then the tablet market there's a foot in the door for the advertising model. All that's left is the phones... get them and they have you as a captive audience for whoever flings cash for ads at them.

It's also possible that MS is looking at a combination package.. "don't want ads while working in Word or anytime we feel like pushing some at you... here's an invoice each month but we'll still suck your data for when you're browse the web."

Yes, they need income, and while their execution on things like phones and tablets has been less than steller, I suspect they've learned a few things. Plus, with Ballmer gone, there's a bit room for a grand plan instead of a reactionary one.

Like a lot of others here, I'm holding fast on Win7. Once I see where this is headed, I'll either go with Win10 (as one should with any "new" OS from MS) or go with Linux or (god forbid) a Mac.

Gay emojis? GAY EMOJIS?! Not here in Russia, comrade

Mark 85

It wouldn't be the first time this happened and it won't be the last. At the risk of violating Goodwin's Law, those high-ranking officials in Germany that were in charge of sending homosexuals to the chambers were themselves gay. A truly hidden agenda to say the least.

This hospital drug pump can be hacked over a network – and the US FDA is freaking out

Mark 85

This is an IoT, right?

Or at least smells like it. I'm not sure why the device needs to be on the network as they didn't use to be. The nurse changed the meds, reset the pump or programmed it if the first time, and let it run. X-hours later, they came back.. rinse and repeat as it was done on scheduled rounds.
