Apple's AirDrop abused by 'cyber-flashing' London train perv

Re: Or...

Now that is probably the sanest idea I've heard in quite awhile. <upvote>

We use a similar ploy around our house... if "unknown caller" or the area code is suspect, we answer the phone "FBI Field Office". When a live person is there, we usually hear a gasp followed by a hang-up.

Re: Talk about risky locations..

There was also the Houston explosion but that wasn't a warehouse...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_City_disaster

Mark 85

I find it interesting that the owner of the warehouse has been "controlled" (per El Reg) or "detained" (per Xinhua). I'm guessing there's also going to be a few city officials also "controlled" for this. Here in the States, lots of fingers would be pointed but no one ends up on police custody.

I just can't imagine storing what appears to be explosives/chemicals going off in the middle of a city.

Exploding Power Bars: EE couldn't even get the CE safety mark right

Mark 85

No testing required for the CE listing? I'm surprised. I've seen this on products here in the States along with CSA and UL which actually test samples of the listed product. The manufacturer pays CSA and UL to do the testing.

If the product isn't being tested then it seems to me the listing requirement is pretty useless. Sort of like ISO compliant, I guess.

Re: @Tealeaf --Another Option?

Valid only for the 1800's. This is 2015. Do you really trust a government to do something competent and without influence from lobbyists or personal greed (be it money, power, or re-election)?

Mark 85

@Tealeaf --Re: Another Option?

Can you give one instance where the government actually did something better than what was previously done? Government != competence. If they tried, all the lobbyists would have a field day and the elected officials would fiddle with the legislation/requirements to fulfill their own needs/views. IOW, fat chance of any good coming from that.

Want Edward Snowden pardoned? You're in the minority, say pollsters

Mark 85

A few questions....

First.... who paid for the poll?

Second... how many who answered have actually read and understood what he released?

Every answer begets more questions... and this is no exception.

For the first question, pollsters want us to believe their polls to be accurate but depending on who's paying for the poll will point to which way the questions are slanted.. and yes, they are slanted.

As for the second... I have my doubts about the knowledge and wisdom of the American people and I am one.

Disclaimer: I'd be questioning the result no matter how this poll comes out. I also question the polls showing Trump and Hillary in the leads for the same reasons.

Hillary Clinton kept top-secret SIGINT emails on her home email server

Mark 85

Re: It proves again that Hillarity is a liar and can't be trusted

While you're right here, we have to remember that there's two sets of rules. One for the Morlocks and one for the Eloy. Hillary and all other politicos come under the Eloy rules which makes them somewhat untouchable. It's us Morlocks that bear the jail time.

And there's been several scandals (as such) over the last few years involving emails, data, etc. from CongressCritters.... no one's done jail time yet. I suspect this is pure politics and if she drops out of the race, or loses, very little will ever be said or followed up on.

I wonder why the prosecutors haven't gone the Swedish version of the Supreme Court to get a ruling. This case isn't the norm but it could be a precedent of commit a crime (alleged), seek asylum, and wait for the statute of limitations to run out. We've had cases here in the States where time has run out but the suspect wasn't in an embassy in asylum, either.

Wrapping the barrel isn't the problem, really.

As I understand it from some sons of some friends who were there, they made it known that their bullets were dipped in pork grease. It made them targets from individuals, and other individuals left them alone. However... I'm of the opinion that it was just a bluff given the nature of the M-16 and some people have told me they couldn't get bacon or ham over there because it would "upset the locals".

Re: There are 2 'Schools of Thought' on this

Since you're only worried about the money and not the people, I'll answer accordingly.

It all depends on all of your vices and the results. Heart attacks and strokes can be quick and cheap or if medical is prompt, it's drawn out. However, if you end up with diabetes, the cost is horrendous. Meds, dialysis, amputation after amputation (and the prosthetics) before the Grim Reaper shows up.

If you want cheap... start smoking and push everyone to smoke. Lung cancer is relatively cheap according to the insurance underwriters. Or go for not wearing a helmet or a super large helmet and riding a motorcycle.

Even the "healthy lifestyle" has it's costs down the road.. exercise wears out joints, for example.

No one gets out of the this life alive, so maybe the answer is Kool-Aid with additives. But I suppose you would refuse it?

Borg blacklist assimilates Cryptolocker domain name generators

Mark 85

Re: Something stinks here...

I think there's a lot the registrars could do but that involved eating away some bottom line. Some else points out the "tasting" period as an example. I suppose it's also possible there's one or two registrars who willingly register these domains and then turn a blind eye to the names and the ones behind it.

And then we have the banks.. <ahem> enabling by blindly transferring funds and no accountability as to where the funds went.

Boils down to follow the money but that's becoming increasingly difficult with all the lack of accountability and tracking by the companies involved.
