'Devastating' bug pops secure doors at airports, hospitals

Mark 85

Re: Popping door access controlled doors is easier than you think ...

Exactly... why the hell a door system needs to be web-facing or even connected to a corporate LAN is beyond me. Same goes for such critters as HVAC.

Mark 85

Rats... missed the irony. My apologies.

Mark 85

True, you did. I also know a lot of IT types who do run Windows Home Edition and some even run McAfee.

Mark 85

Basically true, except for a lot of IT types who won't touch anything on your list.. except Kaspersky. I should qualify this by saying: "at least for the IT types not running Linux".

US government updates secure email guide for first time in a decade

Mark 85

So this agency is coming out and encouraging encryption? I'm shocked that the FBI hasn't been by to persuade them to the FBI line of thought. We really need a scorecard for this... some agencies for better encryption and some not. Although with all the election rhetoric, it'll come down to Congress listening to the fear mongers as usual.

China enacts 'real name policy' for internet addresses

Mark 85

Re: and verify it

That's what we're discussing, I thought.. the database, etc for the domain registration. Nothing to do with cameras, or getting lost in the shuffle.

Mark 85

Re: and verify it

Seeing that it's China... verification might very well be enforced. They tend to play hardball and send the family the bill for the bullet.

Microsoft smells Musk, splashes on 'Mune' space program

A quick Google and it appears it is indeed April Fool's. Nothing from MS, but this article is the oldest article indexed and it looks like others are picking up on it.

Google tried to be funny, cocked it up, everyone thought it was a bug

Mark 85

Apparently, someone takes Google "very seriously" as rumor has it that a few Oompa Loompas lost their jobs over this. If it's true, I'd be willing to bet it wasn't anyone manglement.

Which keys should I press to enable the CockUp feature?

Mark 85

There's two types of folks who seem to read El Reg and especially Dabbsy's articles.... those who are skeptical to the point of being paranoid, and those who are intensely curious. Try this rule of thumb for anything from any article you want to try: Do it on someone else's PC.

Then why bother reading his articles at all. You can spare maybe 5 seconds to read the byline, right?

The ultimate evil was a put a layer of Vaseline on the earpiece and tape the handset button (the one on the phone that did hangups) down. Then call the victim. Ear full of Vaseline while phone keeps ringing.

Hacker reveals $40 attack that steals police drones from 2km away

India orders 770 million LED light bulbs, prices drop 83 per cent

Mark 85

WhenI converted over to CFL's when they first came out, I kept what I had and bought some more. Then when I went to LED's I bought a case of them. I've sold all the incandescents on Craigslist at a profit in the last couple of months. I'm not sure why someone would want the incandescents but they did.

Astronomers find first neutron star in Andromeda galaxy

Now if we just had some way off this rock that didn't take lifetimes to get anywhere near another star, let alone another galaxy.

Not to worry. We have our top men working on it. Top, Men.

Senator Wyden recalls SOPA fight in bid to defeat encryption-weakening efforts

Mark 85

Re: Miranda

Correct... the only "rights" in that are "lawyer up" and "shut up". Not in so many words, of course.

Mark 85

Wyden does have a lot of tech backing by being based in Portland. He also seems to be one of the few CongressCritters who actually understand the tech at least in layman's terms. Most of those idiots want their emails printed out, an admin to which they can dictate the response, etc. IOW, he's got a big clue and listens to what the experts are saying as opposed to the bleaters.

Also a large portion of those who vote for him resist government interfering with their lives, property, freedoms, etc.

China wants a 'Go' at Google's DeepMind

Mark 85

I hope that Google and the Chinese both teach their computers how to play Tic-Tac-Toe first before putting them on the Internet to challenge each other and anyone else. Hopefully no one has the missile launch controllers on the Internet but teaching Tic-Tac-Toe should ensure that no bad end comes from this.

When all is said and done, DevOps did one thing for me and it's best thing I've ever done... I retired. Completely, fully, never to set foot in that door again. And I did it in the middle of the DevOps kick off meeting at the half-way point in the BS.

I do pick up a bit of spot work/temp stuff, every now and then but it's work that I WANT to do and if it turns out to start sliding down the slope, I'm gone.

Not everyone can do this, I understand it full well, but a bit of luck, being of a certain age....

Microsoft announces Windows 10 Anniversary Update coming this summer

Mark 85

Re: Will this be when there's a mandatory update for Windows 7?

I'd almost be willing to bet that on the last day of this shindig, they announce that "everyone is now updating to Windows10 via forced* update" with "no manual intervention required". It will be April 1st after all.

*Forced = no choice.. you're getting whether you want it or not.

Microsoft's Brad Smith on encryption: Let the politicians decide

Mark 85

Re: "Let the politicians decide"?

There is a certain irony there isn't there? The main legal beagle from MS talking about privacy... I wonder if he's actually ever read the EULA that his department has to approve.

Bash on Windows. Repeat, Microsoft demos Bash on Windows

Mark 85

Re: It makes perfect sense

Exactly. It smells like a trap. Be afraid Linux types. Be very afraid.

Since historically, MS has really paid little attention to what users want, for them to suddenly openly embrace Linux to appeal to sysadmins and Linux users is definitely troublesome. It would appear that they're trying to make Windows "more attractive" and allow more of us to say "sure.. install Windows 10".

And really... how many actually trust MS to play nice?

Adblock wins in court again – this time against German newspaper

Mark 85

Follow the stories on ads and Windows10 for the future. It apparently throws ads when the screensaver comes on. So if you leave the computer running and go to bed, you being served ads... using your electric and your bandwidth.

Using Windows10 as the "state of the art" in ad serving, I'm surprised that the TV makers and cable companies haven't forced the TV to stay on 24 hours such that if you hit the "power off", it just goes into "ad mode" and shoves ads at the screen.

Oz uni in right royal 'indigenous' lingo rumpus

Mark 85

So, history is coming back to bite one in the arse, it seems. The next step will be to vilify all the current population for the sins of their forefathers. We're going through this here in the States where polarization is occurring because of the actions of one's great-great-grandparents. But, it's all being done in the name of Political Correctness and that makes it alright. Or does it?

William Hague: Brussels attacks mean we must destroy crypto ASAP

Mark 85

Re: Huh?

Mark 85

Re: Huh?

Right. Where she's from they already have "gun-free zones".. next up: burner phone free zones.

Mark 85

Re: Yes! The problem was that we didn't know about the Brussels bombers!!

You can track and monitor them all you want, but until they actually do something, arrest isn't in the cards. So you k now where they are, who they're talking to, at what point do you legally pick them up and charge them with terrorism or conspiracy? And then there's the question of innocents being sucked up into this... say the local shopkeeper that the terrorist stops by every couple of days and chats for 10 or 15 minutes. Is the shopkeeper a co-conspirator or someone just being chatty?

Every possibility raises more questions. Even watching us all won't stop those who intend to harm.

Mark 85

Just an observation, but fragmentation seems to be the norm for most countries. That also means heavy surveillance of identified problem people is non-existent as manpower is wasted duplicating efforts across jurisdictions.

Here's a great idea: Let's make a gun that looks like a mobile phone

Mark 85

Re: Yankee ingenuity at work.

But this is a really stupid need. The whole concept of "concealed carry" is that the gun is concealed.

Mark 85

A two-shot .380?

And it looks like a phone.. hmm.... I do have a pistol that can use shotgun shells (.410) or .45 ammo. But it's used for the rattlesnakes we get that come through several times a year*. It looks like a gun and feels like one. There's no mistaking it for anything else.

This phone gun is an accident or stupidity waiting to happen. Ok. actually many accidents, much stupidity. This is just a very bad idea, IMO.

Re: International Multisite Company - Keeping Documents away from Internet servers IMPOSSIBLE!

There's also dedicated lines from the telcos available to connect sites together. As long as marketing, sales, and certain other idiots in the hierarchy are allow net access but locked out from the design and development servers, it should be good.

Internet users don't understand security or privacy, says survey

Mark 85

Basically a "no shitte Sherlock" survey.

We know most don't have clue about security, privacy, or Tor. How many times have we heard that someone calls up from "Microsoft" and promptly trashes the computer and charges their credit card? Or they open a doc such as "great new.doc.exe"? Or will give their password for a piece of chocolate? Ad infinitum ad nauseam.

They want the bad guys caught and put away and any means of doing that is fine... until someone looks at their data and then their offended.

As for these types of surveys... pure politics and playing into some politician's desire for more control, surveillance, power.

The FBI lost this round against Apple – but it aims to win the war

Mark 85

Re: End of the War

Will it actually be a victory? Or just the realization that laws from the state will still be broken? Or the other way... privacy and security will be ensured by law but the agencies will just work around it?

It'll be a paper victory for either side at best.

DNS root server attack was not aimed at root servers – infosec bods
