Why two-player games > online gaming: See your pal's shock as you bag a last-second victory

ToggleMaudlin

Ah, the nostalgia!

As a kid growing up in the 90's with a ever-so-slightly younger brother, 2-player console games were a huge part of my childhood. We burned *hours* on Toejam & Earl, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Micro Machines, Combat Cars and the Sonic games. It was mostly co-op stuff for us (that's not to say our Ryu vs. Ken feud hasn't ruined a few controllers though).

We're still playing co-op today - there are quite a few newer games out there that still do local co-op well. Risk of Rain and Trine (and its sequel) are both great for this.

It's as if you took the subject line of every mail in my Hotmail Junk folder, circa 2004, and concatenated them into one gloriously incoherent stream of 'wha?'.

Re: Last on the list

Ah, the venerable 3310... mine is still functional after 10+ years of less than kind treatment, including a stint as a prizefighter in my upper sixth's Phone Conkers tournament and a sustained (accidental) dunking in the Ouse.

The only phone closer to my heart is my old 1100, which is almost as hardy and has a torch.

Nokia Lumia update spreads Black death

ToggleMaudlin

Worked OK for me

The missus and I have Lumia 920's and they've updated just fine. I'm grateful for the improved glance screen and App Folders are encouraging me to be even more lazy-fingered.

I did have problems with updating my 800 to 7.8 a year or so ago, though. Having to have it plugged into Zune (horrible, horrible, horrible application) didn't help.

Has anyone had a chance to play with the Beamer app? Any good?

Commentards in OPINION IS FACT shocker

Yes, machines fail. Yes, some are probably more reliable than others. No, you can't prove the primacy of one brand over another with anecdotes or surveys, nor can you persuade some bloke 6,000 miles away that your chosen manufacturer is better with a litany of 'but it just works' or 'well mine's not failed me once in twenty years'.

I've used both. They're alright. The thing I like most about the missus' MBP is the handy gestures on the touchpad. The thing I like most about my dodgy old Dell is I've been using Windows in some form or another since I was around five years old, so it's like a tatty old duffel coat - I know where all the pockets are.

The parting shot was puerile, pointless and completely uncalled for... which is why I laughed so much that I snorted.

Honestly though, does anyone care that much? These phones - and others like them - aren't fashion statements anymore. A small update is still an update. There's surely a limit to what can be crammed into a phone, anyway.

An important variable...

...that we may not have considered is the state of the imbiber at the time of consumption. I don't know whether this applies across the board but I've found evidence that the following conditions can greatly enhance a cuppa:

- returning home after being drenched in the rain

- coming back from a heavy night on the sauce

- drinking one after having missed your early morning cuppa

- sharing one in the company of a stuffed monkey (unconfirmed)

ToggleMaudlin

I like mine.

I've been using a Lumia 800 for just shy of 18 months and I'm pretty happy with it. Some minor niggles aside (marketplace is unfriendly rubbish interface-wise, having a better task manager and a notification centre would be nice) it does everything I want it to: good call quality, passable battery, great maps functionality and a friendly interface.

I'm open-minded about what I'll go for next. I quite like the look of the HTC One, but I was burned by the Desire before - I hated Sense, the handset was ugly and the battery life was appalling. I'll have a play with one and if I don't get on with it I'll go for a 920 or a 925.

Surely this is a good thing?

All of the smarmy, go-getting, life-coach-believing NPD'ers can go get jobs in firms far, far away from the lot of us, where they can work their way up to insignificant middle management positions and then spend the rest of their lives bitter and stuck as their beauty fades and we bark empty, cynical laughs from our worn leather chairs.

Re: @ToggleMaudlin (was: I think it's just a bit of a shame.)

Nothing - I did it for a couple of autographed glossies of Ballmer. Obviously.

ToggleMaudlin

I think it's just a bit of a shame.

It's probably just a case of too much change, too soon. Having experience of the OS with touch input I can honestly say it's a joy to use (to the point where the first couple of sessions elicited gasps of wonder) but I can see why so many people using desktops are upset with it.

Perhaps what they really needed was a 'transitional' OS between 7 and the next one that introduced some of the more radical changes as optional before jumping feet first into the mobile ship.

I'd be pretty surprised if someone else doesn't redo all of this in ten years time to a standing ovation.

Hold on! Degrees for all doesn't mean great jobs for all, say profs

ToggleMaudlin

In my experience - admittedly perhaps less impressive than some previous comment authors - a good employer doesn't necessarily care where you got the skills you have; if you can show that you can do the job, deliver on time, adhere to brief and don't complain when it comes to the crunch then you're on board.
