Huh? Why should they grant chip level access to the NFC hardware? All that is needed is API access, based on NDEF standard, for example. There are valid reasons to not support the banks on this, but technology isn't one of them.

In any case - in the past you had similar choices- apply the service pack and risk HW compatibility troubles or live with what you have, including a growing risk and SW incompatibility with newer applications.

Rumour has it, that the "Windows 10 Anniversary Edition", due on August 2nd, has a minimum RAM requirement of 2GB, which will kill off most older netbooks and a lot of the tablets that were dumped in the market recently. Perhaps not a great loss, you might say, but under Windows 7 and 8, these devices might have still soldiered on several years.

I wonder, if Microsoft will provide some solution for these devices. Leave them on current Windows 10 and continue to provide updates? Sounds unlikely. Let's see...

Oh, and better get someone to install it for you. The pipes between the heat exchange unit and the AC are not trivial to install.

The question is, if politicians can understand the difference between fully autonomous driving and autopilot systems as they are implemented in current vehicles.

In our company IT costs went up considerably after they started rolling out "Surfaces". It turns out that many users don't feel comfortable using them as laptop replacements and order a laptop additionally after a few weeks.

The impact might have been less obvious, if our IT would have started rolling them out to "non-management" employees first, as those have no right to order a second machine and the laptops they receive are, well, let's just say "hdd" types with half the RAM of my mobile phone.

In any case - Surfaces are tablets. Tablets with keyboard and a full OS, but at the end of the day they are still tablets. That is not a bad thing in itself, as tablets are better suited than pure laptops for a good many tasks, but let's stop pretending they could replace (high quality) laptops adequately.

Best thing that can happen with military equipment. If you start to really need it, something went seriously wrong, IMHO.

perhaps the hotels my company contracted are not exactly on the same level as the ones you visited. The last hotels I went to, all had either Telekom hotspots or some other pay for scheme. Those were all midrange hotels specialized on business customers, though.

Anyway, as there are virtuall no public hotspots, my point still stands.

Oh, but that is the whole point. They don't want to sell stuff any more. They want to rent it for a monthly fee. They are a commercial company, so ultimately they don't give away free stuff. Windows 10 will be payed for one way or another.

No, the best would be to cover the toilet walls with tinfoil to make sure the "occupants" can't get a good cell signal inside the loo. That would also help to shorten they stay and additionally help to improve mobile hygiene.

In official documents Japanese dates are stated as EEYY年MM月DD日, with EE being the epoch. Currently we are in "平成 = heisei" Epoch, year 28.

Ups, my driving licence needs to be renewed until 平成２８年１０月２８日. Still a few months to go, but good I checked...

In less official documents the Gregorian calender year might be used, but no self respecting Japanese public officer would voluntary relapse to something so mundane.

Oh, and each epoch starts and ends with the death/inthronation of a new emperor, so some years have two epochs.

Oh, and sometimes you have to enter the numbers as double byte and sometimes as single byte. Filling in a web form in Japanese can be very frustrating, indeed.

Regarding [Citation needed] - you can check it up in Wikipedia. Not that Wikipedia is any good as a reference.

Nothing is ever simple in Japan...
