Australian Banks ask permission to form anti-Apple cartel

Re: Life's hard choices

"were Apple forced to open up access to their chips, it could feasibly be opening a huge can of worms with a label on it that reads "iPhone NFC Payment Exploit Kit""

Huh? Why should they grant chip level access to the NFC hardware? All that is needed is API access, based on NDEF standard, for example. There are valid reasons to not support the banks on this, but technology isn't one of them.

Free Windows 10 upgrade: Time is running out – should you do it?

Re: Windows8.2=10 is a fraud and a scam!

@Teiwaz,

Pure irony, of course.

In any case - in the past you had similar choices- apply the service pack and risk HW compatibility troubles or live with what you have, including a growing risk and SW incompatibility with newer applications.

Rumour has it, that the "Windows 10 Anniversary Edition", due on August 2nd, has a minimum RAM requirement of 2GB, which will kill off most older netbooks and a lot of the tablets that were dumped in the market recently. Perhaps not a great loss, you might say, but under Windows 7 and 8, these devices might have still soldiered on several years.

I wonder, if Microsoft will provide some solution for these devices. Leave them on current Windows 10 and continue to provide updates? Sounds unlikely. Let's see...

Chairo

Re: Windows8.2=10 is a fraud and a scam!

They have never explained the term "supported lifetime of the device".

I think it is less nefarious as most here think.

Simple fact is that with Windows10 the updates keep coming. At some point they will need to update the kernel in a way you will need new drivers. Tough luck, if your hardware is not supported any more.

In that sense it might be better to stay on a older windows version, as they will be more stable. It depends on your hardware manufacturer's performance.

Microsoft to rip up P2P Skype, killing native Mac, Linux apps

Re: Another Nokia?

It takes a really special kind of management to release an alpha of a new Linux desktop client and a month later put Mac and Linux desktop clients on notice.

Re: Dinosaur mating ritual

"Surfaces aren't tablets"

In our company IT costs went up considerably after they started rolling out "Surfaces". It turns out that many users don't feel comfortable using them as laptop replacements and order a laptop additionally after a few weeks.

The impact might have been less obvious, if our IT would have started rolling them out to "non-management" employees first, as those have no right to order a second machine and the laptops they receive are, well, let's just say "hdd" types with half the RAM of my mobile phone.

In any case - Surfaces are tablets. Tablets with keyboard and a full OS, but at the end of the day they are still tablets. That is not a bad thing in itself, as tablets are better suited than pure laptops for a good many tasks, but let's stop pretending they could replace (high quality) laptops adequately.

Re: SIM free

Two years ago I changed to a data only SIM with only emergency call phone support and a separately bought simlock free smartphone and never looked back.

Oh my, did I write this? I suppose you should never read an article again after posting it.

Two years ago I changed from the usual plan to a SIM only contract and bought separately a simlock free smartphone. This contract gives me a few GB of mobile data, but no telephone support apart from emergency calls. I am quite happy with the deal and never looked back.

Well, I hope this is a bit less headache inducing. Sorry for any pain inflicted!

Chairo

SIM free

Two years ago I changed to a data only SIM with only emergency call phone support and a separately bought simlock free smartphone and never looked back.

Usually I use my private mobile only for contacting friends and the wife, and IP telephoning works perfectly well for this.

All in all I saved a lot of money, have a far more flexible contract and have no carrier bloat in my phone. Only problem is the available phones. Here in Japan the market for unlocked smartphones is still very limited. Huawei, ASUS and a few Japanese brands are available with some models, otherwise you have to go for grey imports or the second hand market. I think you can also buy an unlocked IPhone nowadays, but the SIM free crowd is probably not their target market segment... What's notable is that Sony is missing with any unlocked models in their very own home market. Pity, as I rather like their phones, but if they don't want to sell their stuff... someone else made the deal.

Germans set to make schnitzel out of controversial Wi-Fi law

Chairo

@Charlie Clark,

perhaps the hotels my company contracted are not exactly on the same level as the ones you visited. The last hotels I went to, all had either Telekom hotspots or some other pay for scheme. Those were all midrange hotels specialized on business customers, though.

Anyway, as there are virtuall no public hotspots, my point still stands.

Chairo

A change in the rules could help bring about more Wi-Fi availability in cafes and other public places in Germany.

GIven that there is currently pretty much zero open internet available in Germany, it is difficult to talk about "more" availability.

On the other hand, this has nicely boosted the profits of commercial providers, mainly Telekom, as visitors currently have to pay through their nose for connectivity. In my experience most hotels gave up offering their own hotspots and made contracts with Telekom, that happily installs their "pay through the nose" hotspots.

Re: Is there anything worth pirating these days?

Given that you can stream pretty much everything from Youtube, including copyrighted stuff, filesharing has become a bit pointless lately. Apart from blockbusters pretty much everything is avalable. And as you say - apart from a few exceptions I also feel they are pointless to watch, at least on the small screen.

Some years ago I used to download anime fansubs of stuff that was not yet (or never would be) licensed in Europe, which used to be a gray area at that time. A few weeks back I checked out some anime, but most sites seem to be dead now. Not sure, if the legal eagles came down on them or the scene just moved on to youtube. Anyway, it's now all there. All in the hands of Google.

Re: Chinese manufacturers aren't too bothered about their stuff once it's out the door.

It varies from model to model and market to market. The Huawai G615 I bought roughly two years ago was pretty much abandonware. There were some Chinese Roms with an updated EmoUI, but the base Android version was stuck to Lollipop, so no need to bother installing them. In that case at least Nova launcher worked like a charm.

I hear since the P6 came out they supplied at least a few international updates before dropping it. But again not for all variants and markets.

Generally - if you are not Chinese and expect good customer service and updates, you should probably look somewhere else.

Mud sticks: Microsoft, Windows 10 and reputational damage

Chairo

Two things only?

How about lying about the user tracking? It was supposed to happen only in the beta, but made it's way into the production version.

And it cannot be completely deactivated by the user in the non-pro versions.

And no, introducing the "feedback feature" to earlier versions of Windows didn't help repairing the damage.

No one likes to be watched over the shoulder. It is creepy and disturbing. IMHO that's what keeps most people away from Windows 10 Additionally Windows 10 was pushed with malware tactics. Making your new product perceived as malware is probably not such a bright idea, or is it?

In the past Microsoft could react on bad perception of a Windows version by renaming the next service pack and call it with the next version number. This door they closed by themselves by insisting to call all future versions "Windows 10".

I wonder if they already fired the idiot person responsible for this disaster. Probably there is no one higher up to fire him?

Oh, and each epoch starts and ends with the death/inthronation of a new emperor, so some years have two epochs.
