DRM now a formal Web recommendation after protest vote fails

Re: There are bigger fish to fry

Apples and oranges. DRM mentioned here is for content that is viewed in a browser. However, I'll address your "orange". If you can't find a vendor that still has a copy of Office 2010 that you can buy today, then you aren't looking hard enough. Wanting to buy it from Microsoft when it is in extended support and not mainstream support is your second problem.

There are bigger fish to fry

While I understand this concept and see that it is grounded in content rights, I can't help but think of other things that webmasters and server administrators are already saddled with. The basis for this, while sound, doesn't address the deeper issue - the fact that piracy is something that some end users do, for varying reasons (or more appropriately called excuses). Webmasters and server admins have to deal with the lack of standards (or even an RFC) for things like wildcard domains. End users feel the brunt of that one with different code from different browsers (and Chromes method is the absolute worst). This entire evolution from Web 2.0 to 3.0 (or what the rest of you would call the HTML 5 Standard being adhered to) has been a huge mess. It's time for some REAL standards to appear.

Yeah, WannaCry hit Windows, but what about the WannaCry of apps?

Dont ask how many

In doing tech support for quite some time for various people and orgs, one of my pet peeves is the C++ runtime from 2005 being found on machines. This article should be required reading for some OEMs (cough cough).

Heaps of Windows 10 internal builds, private source code leak online

Re: "Technically, it's the best news we will get all year"

You completely miss the reason why I say this. I'm for linux, more and more as time wears on. Microsoft has made some really horrible moves of late - did you even see Windows 8? I did, and it was complete garbage. What I am hoping this does is bring us closer to linux getting the driver support it deserves. I could tell you a story about a laptop upgrade to Windows 10 that failed miserably due to a graphics driver, but I digress. The point is, linux needs to unify, not segment, and this event could be the catalyst. I'm just hoping to get the application and driver support in linux that I get in Windows. By far, it is the best news I've gotten this year - one step closer to an unfragmented linux culture.

Technically, it's the best news we will get all year - if you are a Windows user.

Re: This will impact others as well

It is certainly unethical, but whether or not it is illegal is what is questioned here. Companies spend a lot of money on lawyers for a variety of reasons, why not spend the money to ensure there is a clause prohibiting malicious activity.

This will impact others as well

I've worked a variety of different jobs, some IT, as well as other job titles and every time I've needed to do something that would have far reaching implications, I have always asked someone higher up. Those questions have had a mix of reactions ranging from "Glad you asked first" to "I thought you were a self starter". The lack of clear policy is the issue here and it varies from company to company.

Yahoo! Japan says 22 MEELLION User IDs may have been nabbed

its harvesting

This type of effort is usually done to harvest email accounts to spam or for other nefarious purposes. One of these types bothered to admit what s/he was doing openly to me in 2006 via yahoos instant messaging client. Offering the information to the authorities is pointless. I sometimes seriously consider this really is an oligarchy and all of the people in positions of power are hell-bent on screwing every last one of the little guys - without gel if possible.

Exceptions would be our fearless reporters at El Reg, and the honest, clean commenters such as the ones above and below me, here.

MMX

In 1997 someone insisted I was such a "loser" because the computer I was using for basic web browsing, email, and typing up my college papers lacked MMX. I have made it a bit of a habit to get one of the lower end machines. I feel happier because of it, knowing that I was ahead of the curve.

TY El Reg, for showing me that I lead, not follow.

Re: In related news,

I went looking just this past week for some mobile sites to add to my droid tablet as shortcuts. It looks like Yahoo lost its first love - being a web directory. I expected better, although there are some sites out there that have bothered to collect the links for users like myself.
