Would you work for BlackBerry boss Chen? He says his biz has 50:50 chance of success

Frank N. Stein

I'd like to see Blackberry claw it's way back. There are too many Enterprise MDM users stuck on the iPhone 4S and iPads. It's time for a different choice. BB needs to develop a stronger partnership with AirWatch, to insure that their products and services are compatible and offer remote control options that the other platforms don't offer.

T-Mobile US: Our dump-your-network drive is doing SO WELL (PS: We lost $20m last quarter)

Let's see if losses widen or lessen over the next three quarters.

Samsung brandishes quad-core Galaxy S5, hopes nobody wants high specs

Frank N. Stein

So much for all of the rumors and such about the S5. Won't be till the end of the year that we see what the Note 4 will be like. THAT is the one I'm waiting to hear about.

Nokia to Devs: PLEASE DON'T make Nokiadroid apps look like WinPho

Frank N. Stein

I am waiting for someone to root an XL and tell us what version of Cyanogenmod will be running on it. It was complete lunacy for Nokia to fork Android and replace Google's services on it in favor of Nokia or Microsoft services. Any developers rushing to port their apps to NokiaDroid?

We nearly MISSED OUT on iOS7 redesign: But someone snatched Jony Ive from the jaws of quit

Frank N. Stein

It's hard to argue with success, regardless of personal agreement or lack thereof, when it comes to products that Ive has designed for Apple. He worked his way up head of both hardware and software design, and millions of customers buy products that he's had a hand in designing.

BOFH: He... made... you... HE made YOU a DOMAIN ADMIN?

Frank N. Stein

Simon, you're my hero. You have no idea (or, perhaps, you do) how much the users in your blogs sound like the real users that we face out here in the wild, particularly when it comes to Enterprise MDM Helpdesk. It's amazing to see how either the users, their PC Support Group, and/or the domain admins can screw things up so badly. And it's even more frightening how many executives who lack technical skill to operate even iOS devices, will put their assistant up to calling us when technical support is needed. Of course, she's often less skilled than her boss. These people find very interesting ways to screw up easy to use technology and say things like, "My iPad doesn't work", after which, we naturally have to ask what specifically isn't working on their iPad. Naturally, that infuriates them and rather than own up to having weak communication skills, they claim that we just "don't understand" what they are saying. HA!!! Then of course, there are the liars who claim that an icon somehow just vanished from their home screen, but probing questions always find what they did to cause that nonsense. My personal favorites are the ones who claim something is wrong with their iPhone 4S so that we'll RMA it, but naturally, they ask if they can get an upgrade to an iPhone 5 and are disappointed to learn that they will receive an iPhone 4S, just like what they had previously. These geniuses will brake them once a week, for weeks on end, thinking frequent failures will result in an upgrade to an iPhone 5? No can do on that, sir/madame. You get like for like, no matter how many times you brake it, unless you'd prefer to pay the $750 full price for an iPhone 5. That suddenly reduces the number of times they brake their iPhone 4S. :-D

Facebook gobbles WhatsApp for SIXTEEN BILLION DOLLARS

Frank N. Stein

Facebook stock trending downward after this Whatsapp purchase news? I'm not paying any "nominal fee" for a chat service that I've been using for free, any more than I'd pay Facebook to promote my posts.

Samsung flings sueball at Dyson for 'intolerable' IP copycat claim

Frank N. Stein

Really, Samsung? It's highly unlikely that Dyson's filing against you "damaged your reputation" as a vacuum cleaner manufacturer. Has anyone here ever seen a Samsung Vacuum cleaner? Perhaps in Korea. Not in the USA, for sure. Not to worry, Sammy. Apple will sue you over the Galaxy S5.

Apple's Hacker Princess dumps fruity firm for Elon Musk's Tesla

Frank N. Stein

It's not a good idea for anyone located anywhere to publicly refer to themselves in Social Media, as a "hacker". But a "transgender hacker"? What has the world come to?

Dell disputes 15k layoff figure: Only a few staffers accepted 'voluntary separations'

Frank N. Stein

Dell denies impending culling. Anyone surprised? Of course, they don't want their staff to know the actual sack numbers. Of course, they'll deny it till it's done. But whether it's 15,000 or 10,000, they're still people, and it's just about guaranteed that a majority of those sacks won't be in upper management. Want to save some real money? Cull management. Save them more money than sacking the bottom half.

Facebook app now reads your smartphone's text messages? THE TRUTH

Glad I abandoned Android and Facebook for Android. I didn't add my phone number to my FB account and don't require two step authentication. These blokes can't be trusted with personal info.

BlackBerry makes its devilish Android trickery official in OS update

Frank N. Stein

Blackberry has a chance to regain their footing in the Enterprise. Most of the customers that we support are using iPhone 4S and Android Phones that are 3 years old. Windows Phone has very little presence in AirWatch MDM deployments, at the moment. As someone else noted, the Z30 is definitely looking good.

Apple declares war on PAYPAL: Pay-by-bonk + iTunes = profit, right?

Frank N. Stein

Apple payment system? Bring it!! It has to be better than the craptastic Paypal. I hope it succeeds wildly and buries PayPal.

9,000 heads to roll at Dell? Tosh. It'll all go down in Feb and it's THOUSANDS more - insiders

Frank N. Stein

"Our strategy is a multi-year initiative"- So, Dell is planning a multi- year employee sacking initiative. Right-Oh!!

Maybe some of those "tough decisions" could "affect" upper management personnel and help the company to save "resources" that are often squandered are useless management personnel?

Windows 8 fans out-enthuse Apple fanbois

Frank N. Stein

Hmmm...

Interesting. But this seems more aimed at software developers who Microsoft needs in order to fill the Windows App Store, rather than a move aimed at consumer fanbois/fangirls. What consumer customer needs to have 81 Windows devices? That's a business customer scenario. But I give credit to Microsoft for allowing a customer to have 81 devices under one user ID. That encourages adoption of more devices and that is certainly good for Microsoft.

BlackBerry BLOODBATH! Company warns of nearly $1bn quarterly loss

Frank N. Stein

Sales and marketing is only of real value if you're selling something that people are buying. It's still possible that other platform owners may be interested in hiring these people, particularly those that seek to gain ground in the enterprise mobile device management market.

Microsoft: Surface a failure? No, it made us STRONGER

Frank N. Stein

It doesn't matter what's in the Surface Tablets if they screw up the price point. That's the primary reason why they didn't sell. No one is willing to over pay for a Microsoft Surface Tablets. By pricing them above Apple iPads, this guaranteed no one would buy them. Even without a bluetooth keyboard, the iPad mini sells. Surface needs to be priced lower than Apple in order to even attract interest, much less sell in any quantities. Why do you think Microsoft finally started ad campaigns comparing the price of Acer Windows 8 Tablets to iPad minis? They need to lower the price of the Surface from the start, or they will not sell.

Second-gen Surface and Surface Pro rumored to be minor upgrades

Frank N. Stein

Price it right or it won't sell

Hopefully, Microsoft finally learned the pricing lesson. If they don't price it right, it will not sell. That's a simply fact that's already been proven.

Web showered in golden iPhone 5S vid glory - but is it all a DISTRACTION?

Frank N. Stein
FAIL

Re: @uhuznaa What's interesting

This is my problem with Apple. With billions of dollars just sitting in the bank, they get lazy, elongate the iPhone 4 with a 4" screen, change a little of this and that, give it LTE and call it an "all new" product? The 5S will be another lazy incrementally upgraded product that doesn't even approach the real innovation that they could do if Jobs was still there. Better battery life. A bigger screen (4.7"). Wireless charging. Anything NEW to give us a "One more Thing" moment at the end of the yawn fest Keynotes, would be an improvement. Instead, everyone is going Ga Ga over a plastic iPhone that may or may not be a real product (and if it is, it is unlikely to be sold in the developing nations). and an iPhone 5S who's biggest deal is a Champagne color?

Bradley Manning is no more. 'Call me Chelsea,' she says

Frank N. Stein

Really?

REALLY??

Sure that this isn't just some sort of media stunt to inspire some odd form of sympathy? The dude is a man, so it's pretty stupid to refer to him as a "She" or "Her", regardless of him losing his mind after losing his freedom and deciding he wants to be a "she". This isn't going to take the focus off him passing classified documents to a third party, breaking the law, and being convicted for it. And really, you're going to get the military to pay for hormone therapy after they've de-ranked you and made you forfeit your pay? That amounts to THE PUBLIC paying for your hormone therapy with tax dollars, through the military. Personally, I don't think the public should have to pay for some convicted felon's hormone therapy because he's "changed his mind" about what gender he wants to be. You're still going to a man's prison. What do you think is going to happen to you there, whether you get hormone therapy or not??

Google: Cloud users have 'no legitimate expectation of privacy'

Frank N. Stein

Privacy?

Get over it. Your life is an open book. Google, MS, AOL, Yahoo, et al can all read and analyse your e-mail, cloud storage, phone, PC, tablet, and a$$ and you can't do a dam thing about it. So just swallow before the next one shoves it on your mouth and get use to it.

Cisco readies axe for 4,000 employees

Frank N. Stein

Really?

Put another way, Executives at Cisco want to continue making their fat salaries. The only way to insure that happens is to swing the axe to 4,000 staffers to insure that they take the financial hit, rather than the execs. Welcome to Gordon Gecko's philosophy. GREED IS GOOD!!

Microsoft: Here's some cash, channel. PLEASE sell Office 365

Frank N. Stein

I don't think so

I am one small business customer who refuses to pay an annual subscription to any Microsoft software, least of all, Office 365. I do not require it and will not be using it. EVER. Enjoy it if you have it and like it. I shall pass on it.

BYOD cheers up staff, boosts productivity - and IT bosses hate it

Frank N. Stein

Re: Another Reg article banging on about BYOD

No one at the top cares for the opinion of those at the bottom. But how do you think all those iPhones and iPads made their way into corporate environments? Someone at the exec level insisted that theirs be set up on the corporate network. Having an exec connected to the network on personal devices makes sense. Having desk workers who have 9 to 5 desk jobs be connected 24/7, makes no sense at all, if they aren't in sales or an exec at the top level of the corporate food chain.

Frank N. Stein
Thumb Down

Another thing...

The other point that may be missed in all this, is that an employer who's all to willing to allow you to connect your device to their network, may wish to spy on your personal activities and use that as an excuse to fire you, should some form of "budget cuts" or "cost cutting strategy" be necessary at the company. Don't think so? This is why employer's are so interested in your Facebook and Twitter details and encourage employees friending each other on social networks. Some may think it paranoid, but I've seen friends and strangers alike, fired over Facebook posts that the company did not like, an opinion expressed that they didn't support, or some post that someone assumed to mean one thing, when it meant something else entirely.

Re: Small steps...

Who really needs 24/7 access to corporate e-mail besides execs or sales people? If they aren't in sales or an exec with a corner office and a cute young assistant, then they don't really need 24/7 access to corporate e-mail. Do yourself a favor and deny them access to personal devices and don't support them. That way, they can work from their desk computer and if they want to work approved over time, let them, if it's in the budget. Otherwise, you're opening a can of tech support worms that will send you to the pub regularly for all the wrong reasons.

Frank N. Stein

BYOD?

I've always carried my own mobile phone. I have neither the need nor desire to receive company e-mail on it, nor do I have any need to connect it to the company network, therefore, the IT Dept. has no say in me bring my phone with me on the job or anywhere else, and I'm certainly not allowing them to touch it any do anything to it, "lock down" or otherwise.
