Boffins achieve 'breakthrough' in random number generation

A Man from Venus

Is the distribution important?

Hmmm I wonder how they do this. I'd imagine that it is well known that as you add more and more streams of random numbers together the closer the resulting series becomes to being random drawn from a normal distribution.

Why can’t I walk past Maplin without buying stuff I don’t need?

Re: Two words (and an ellipsis)

Ah yes, I forgot the pin, I was quite prod of it at the time, I think it's in a box of assorted tat in the spare room now

Re: Two words (and an ellipsis)

I seem to remember it as top 400 and bottom 16(hundred), was 42 series audio interconnects etc, I think 274 series were assorted plugs and adaptors, off the top of my head I though resistors were 279 but I could well be wrong. . . it's > 20 years ago after all.

Ubuntu? Fedora? Mint? Debian? We'll find you the right Linux to swallow

Thumb Up

Started with Slackware

I started with Slackware 8 (I think) and had great fun building Mythtv so many dependencies to track down and build. . . in the end I found trying to keep up somewhere close to current to be a chore (package manager doesn't / didn't check dependencies). I've since had a couple of buntu's and SUSE before settling on Gentoo. I left KDE when things like Akonadi and Nepomuk reared their ugly heads and installed XFCE instead! Miles simpler. Great thing about Gentoo is the documentation is pretty good (although without it I doubt anyone would ever successfully install).

Linux

I was running a Ubuntu LTS on a machine in my cellar until the support ended, I pressed dist update and the machine was rendered unbootable! I won't be spending a lot of energy recovering to Ubuntu for all it's supposed ease of use!

My other home machines run Gentoo and I think that's the way this one will go too.
