Interesting story also about the sound track. Branson wanted a soundtrack by the Eurythmics who were very big at the time and the director changed it.

"Julia" is the only song by the Eurythmics that made it onto the movie and only at the credits. It is still my favorite song by them.

@Kev99 It wasn't the engineer

Sounds like marketing or upper management. This reminds me of an old Chevy I had. It had a six cylinder engine and worked real well. Marketing decided that model needed a V8. It fit. So the next years model had a V8. It fit. Sort of. You need to yank the engine to replace the plugs. I think someone figured out how to lift the engine just a little bit to change out the plugs. That wasn't an engineering decision.

Smart meters set to cost Blighty as much as replacing Trident

Hud Dunlap

Question for Kat Hall

A few years ago Smart meters were being pushed in the U.S.. Here in Texas there were fights over privacy issues since they monitored your use every minute. Some people were arrested for not allowing the power company to come on their property and change out the meter.

Now I am for a meter that sends data once a month so the meter reader doesn't get into an altercation with my dogs. There is no reason for the power company to invade my privacy and constantly monitor my usage.

You have mentioned how high the cost is in the U.K., but what about the U.S.? Is there any major difference in the meters?

What about battery life

I had a 2003 Honda Insight for ten years. I was on my third battery when I got rid of it. The first battery made 60K miles. The second made 30K. The battery was $4K and the electronic control module. was $1K. I did a little research at the time and found that once the first battery fails the next one doesn't last as long. I was lucky that I was covered by an extended warranty. I sold the car before the warranty ran out.

Other than a brake job and scheduled maintenance the only issue I had with the car was battery related.

Re: So what about the other nineteen states and the U.S. Government@the coward

First off Native Americans have a very special legal status based on over two hundred years of various treaties. The fact that you don't know that means you have a very limited knowledge of American History.

Secondly the article clearly states the law is based on the one that Bill Clinton signed in 1993, not an exact copy. Different authors are going to use different language based on their backgrounds or perhaps court rulings in their state. Since the Federal law was passed in 1993 I am sure there are a lot of court cases to look at.

As far as your comment "Dunlapse". Really? I haven't heard that one since fourth grade.

Re: Nah... @bloodbeasterror

No they didn't. Back when I worked for a Semiconductor OEM I spent many hours testing equipment to make sure it didn't have problems. My employers equipment didn't. Some of the other vendors that I worked with had major problems. Such as complete lockups.

The reason we didn't have major issues with Y2K is because everyone was testing ahead of time.

The biggest problem with Y2k was the H1-B visa. The Y2K bug was the "reason" the U.S. started letting in so many foreign tech workers.

Re: IT Angle? @ Bloodbeastterror.

As I said in my post. Other sites are covering it. It is not like the Reg is breaking something that no one else is. You didn't even respond to my point that the video of a beheading that was leaked out is using the web to "raise the awareness" as you say would be more of a valid article for this site.

I don't go to political sites for tech news and I don't read El Reg for political news.

Hud Dunlap
IT Angle

IT Angle?

I have followed this on other sites but I don't see why it is on the register. A lot of people say stupid things on and off the internet and pay the consequences.

As others have pointed out, if you violate the laws of your country you suffer the consequences. Be glad you live in the west. I surprised that El Reg didn't mention the video of the women being beheaded that was briefly on Youtube. Smuggled videos that end up on social media sites seem to me to be more of a story. Wikileaks anyone?
