Cover your NASes: QNAP acknowledges mystery malware but there's no patch yet

Re: New year?

"If you restrict access from the Internet to your QNAP, you are likely to be OK"

Do either of the follow qualify as restricting access?

If you use QNAPCloud to access your QNAP NAS remotely then you'll either have enabled uPnP on your router or have (as I have) opened port 443 and directed it to your QNAP.

"I've yet to find _any_ bluetooth headphones with audio quality as good as a decent pair of wired ones"

Bravo! You didn't say "I'm yet to find..." so have an upvote from me.

I've grown somewhat despondent about the state of the English language used in everything from newspaper columns to social media posts/comments, so seeing it's correct use is a ray of light in these times of mis-use/ignorance of the language leading to a so-called evolution of it.

Nobody in China wants Apple's eye-wateringly priced iPhones, sighs CEO Tim Cook

Aside from the high price, there's little reason for me to upgrade from my iPhone 6S which I'll probably keep until it no longer works and only then upgrade, at which point I may look at Android phones, though having said that, if the latest iPhones had a headphone socket then I'd be more likely to upgrade

There's a self-administered treatment for that, surprised you hadn't thought of it.

If I had gigabit fibre with > 900Mbps up _and_ down I'd use it for backing up my NAS device to a cloud service.

Too pricey and limited options

The choice of configurations is also limited compared with the SP4 range - if you want 16GB ram then you have to fork out for the 512TB SSD version which costs more than £2k and that's without the typecover and pen!

I guess most sales of this latest SP will be to OPM-spenders...

Mag publisher Future stored your FileSilo passwords in plaintext. Then hackers hit

Shocking but not surprising for a magazine publisher.

Years ago I tried to log on to a well known UK IT magazine publisher's site to manage my subscription and crashed the database web application, dumping the raw text of the SQL statement to the web page that had failed because of the apostrophe in my surname. And this was years after SQL injection attacks (and how to avoid them) had been widely publicised.

Thank **** I use a password manager that generates gibberish unique passwords for each of my logins.

Banks 'not doing enough' to protect against bank-transfer scams

What about inside-jobs?

A friend of mine wrote a cheque for a large sum which he knew had been received by the payee as they'd acknowledged it by letter, but a subsequent phone call (on the same day that said letter was received) from someone claiming to be from his bank told him that there was a problem clearing the cheque and that they'd have to take him through security, which, suspecting a scam, he played along with giving false info. Given the timing of the call, it could be argued that someone at his bank had tipped-off the scammers and if proven, then surely the bank _would_ be liable for any losses?

Re: 1Password

Within days of the LastPass announcement, I took a look at AgileBits website and saw that 1Password was discounted by 40% so I jumped in and purchased the Windows/Mac bundle for what worked out at less than £30. The iOS app was also discounted so after migrating my LastPass data I'm now a happy 1Password user. You have the option of synching between devices via cloud services such as Dropbox or you can use your WiFi/network to sync between PCs, Macs and iOS devices, which is arguably more secure than useing The Cloud.

Re: Oh Dear - It's Crap

Bing isn't as useless as Apple Maps but it nowhere near as usable as Google Maps. Bing's map UI is very cluttered and bits of the screen are wasted with things like the thin progress bar and other crap

Wonder if they've fixed that email bug...

...you know, the one where you have an email in the Drafts folder, you open it and press Send, but a random email-server authentication error occurs and the email isn't sent, and has disappeared from Drafts and is nowhere to be seen in the Outbox. So you have to retype the email all over again.

First found that bug in iOS3, still hasnt' been fixed in 5...
